Great idea Swiss, well done for doing something. It's something that bugs me here too, our road is a 20 limit with a school on the other side of the house and cars parked all down one side. It has those useless box speed bumps which any normal car can straddle, it actually makes things worse as cars swerve all over the road to avoid them. Big 4x4's and vans don't even notice them (not great in a lowered scoob though ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Even though it's a 20, loads of people easily do 40 down there, so although the actual speed isn't that high and it's not really that noisy, it's the thought of kids walking into the road by accident who would have no chance - either mine (4 and 7) or from the primary across the road - which scares me.
As you said, I'm not a big fan of speed cameras, but I would like to see more efforts made to reduce speed on urban residential roads rather than motorways and national speed limit areas.

*** A little update for you ******
The problem has not improved and if anything has gotten worse due to the light evenings. Looked like I was getting somewhere as I was contacted by a nice lady PC from the local area saying she ran the local community speedwatch programme and would I like to set up my own ?
Well as you can imagine, old victor meldrew here jumped at the chance. A few delays, nothing major but at long last after what seems like months (well it is
) something is finally happening.
Distributed tons of letters to all the local residents on my road and now have about 8 of them going to help out and this was planned for this afternoon. The police would attend and monitor the operation and then would then advise on future speed watches and help us tackle the problem.
Guess what ?
Got a call from the nice lady PC and she apologised for not being able to attend because she was busy dealing with a speeding drunk driver.
The result ?

Seems a bit ironic doesn't it

Never mind, it may develop later in life when you have grown up a bit!

Mostly, the limits seem sensible but there are a few where it seems to be 30 or 40 for miles for no reason.
I think the answers are 1) better road/junction design and 2) keep motorway junctions away from small villages wherever possible.
Continental types seem to manage it by narrowing the roads and inserting minor chicanes containing shrubberies into the middle of the road and near the verges. They also manage to cater for cyclists whilst doing all this.

I used to drive that-a-way for pleasure a few summers ago. Generally, out up the M-way, then back either taking in the Lane End - Marlow side of things or going up the ridge on the A40.

I'm thinking about something similar for our road as there is no need for 40+ round a blind bend on a residential dead end
