I have a similar problem. During the day it is around 6.2mb/s and in the evenings its about 2 to 3 mb/s less.

Upload speed is just poor all the time.

My good friend told me about IDNET as they keep your connection on a 1:1 rather than a 1:50, so the speed is high all the time even at peak.

I tried this website SamKnows Broadband - Availability - Exchange Search and it came back with no services in this area

I wish we could have Virgin cable, but they won't go any further with the cable which finishes two roads away

X10 is that home automation thing that uses the mains to control lights, plugs etc...

How long a cable do you need? I have 6 boxes of cat5e and cat6 in my lounge. It is solid core though, just don't keep bending it too much. I can bang on 2 rj45 ends if you need?

Alternatively you could use the adsl login details from someone else using another ISP on your exchange? This use to work, but I think BT might have stopped this? Failing that, a long phone extension cable

Have you tried plugging the router into the master test socket bypassing your internal wiring?

Probably about 20m mate.
I've turned everything off. Just have the two homeplugs in, the router and the PC going. I've got a new external IP so I had hoped that maybe it would help...

nope!
I'm just downloading the drivers for my wireless adaptor to see what that gives me.
The router insists its connected with
downstream = 8128kbps
upstream = 448kbps
Line attenuation downstream = 23.0 db
Line attenuation upstream = 14.5db
Noise margin downstream = 9.3db
Noise margin upstream = 19.0db

Interestingly the router has a 'sky test' option and when I click it another dialog box opens and after a minute I get a message saying
"The Sky Test was unable to detect the Internet connection" - Error code:300

Wireless dongle...

pffffffffffft!

Right been on to Sky and as it states in their guidelines

--------------------------------------
As Sky Connect customers are not on the Sky network we are unable to extend this promise to them, and in order to provide a sustainable quality broadband service to our Connect customers, we may slow down the speed that all Sky Broadband Connect customers can get on certain applications which may have a negative effect on other customers. There are no restrictions in place for applications such as browsing, email, streaming, instant messaging and VOIP during peak times, and we do not put restrictions on our Connect network outside of peak times. More details on our Connect Traffic Management policy are available in our usage policies.
-----------------------------------------

I've requested my MAC code, cause I've recieved no 'warnings' that I've exceeded any download limits.
Now I just need to find a decent provider that doesn't want to tie me into a long contract (thinking that that exchange is due to be upgraded this year)

If your router is syncing at 8128kbps but you're only getting 1Mbit when downloading in the evenings then it's highly likely your ISP are throttling in the evenings. BT are terrible for this as well.

If you're on an up to 8Mbit broadband connection then you must be very close to the exchange to get 8128kbps. With ADSL2 you'd probably get 18-24Mbit.

I use BeThere (www.bethere.co.uk). No throttling, up to 24Mbit connection with 1.3Mbit upload. There is a 3 month contract available if you want to go for that. Plus on your birthday they give you a free days surfing and credit you back a day.

If BeThere is in your area then I'd highly recommend them. You'll have to excuse their new website, I don't think it was designed by a human.

If you enter your phone number in their website they will give you an idea of the estimated speed you could get.

If you want an "Invite a friend" invite then let me know.

Hi mate,
Sounded perfect, but just put my number into their website and it's not available in my area
Probably will once the exchange is upgraded.
I'm 0.7miles from the exchange (following the roads).

I guess they'll cap me for the next 30 days now!
