i think what gets the OP's goat is that this current employer offered him the van perk specifically to induce him to leave a previous job and know its gone

6*2*12 = 144 which is the mileage / 25 (mpg) = 5.76 * (1.06 * 4.55 [price of fuel]) = £27.78 in fuel per week

Ins £300 pa, servicing £500 pa, tyres £100 pa, rfl £150 pa = £1050/52 = £20 pw

Not taking into account cost of vehicle & depreciation...

So he was roughly providing you a benefit equivalent to £47.75 per week NET of Tax, so even more roughly was worth £60 per week in Gross Salary

He will probably baulk at £3K pa as the cost to him was just the fuel on which he would save VAT + a bit of additional wear/tear.

Depends how well you know him and how good a negotiator you are but if you put it all out in black and white, he can't really argue the figures but change any of the above to show real costs you might have & don't over egg it. I reckon you could start at stating the £3k, explain it wasn't realistic to expect him to pay that but you'd go £2250 and work from there maybe? It's up to you!

not sure what the 6*2*12 is ?

My calcs are simpler

6 * 2 * 5 (Assumes 6 miles twice a day, 5 days a week)

60 Miles a week

We get 40p a mile all in (something like that) to cover cost of car on business mileage.

60 * 40p = £24 a week.

Puff, where does the 144 miles come from 6 miles each way x 5 days is 60 miles a week. Probably £10 a week in fuel it was costing to get to and from the place of work, to 900 miles a week around £80-£90. At £80 a week thats over £3k extra at current fuel prices for your boss.

Blue scooby how big is your work and what buisness is it?

Nah, can't be. He didn't factor in a second car, a second garage and a garage for his ducks.

Sorry to mention it again, but around 8 people have already asked and you keep ignoring the question. Why did you move 80 miles away?

Typical van driver ! Why did you move 80 miles away or a 160mile round trip from where you work ? I bet you thought " Dont worry, Boss will pay for my fuel...."

Simple maths.

6 miles a trip/ 12 m/p/d X 5 (days)= 60 m/p/w / 30 (avg mpg ) = 2 gals @ £5p/g = £10.
80 miles a trip / 160 m/p/d x 5 (days) = 800 m/p/w / 30 (avg mpg ) = 26 gals @ £5 a/g = £130

£130 - £12 = £118. 52 weeks - 4 (holiday) = 48 - 1 (BHolidays) = 47 x £118 = £5664.

So, because you've now moved 80 miles away, are you worth £5600 more ?? Mmmm becareful here, as in these times, might be cheaper for him, for you to get all moody and leave !

Like I said, typical van driver.

Well if that is what you are getting in hand and you are on top rate tax - he is paying over 13K extra and on standard tax, about 9.4K extra once NI is payed.
He must love you.
