They look good in the photos, and these differances below are noted just from the photos.

Again the most obvious fault is no AR coating on the lens.

There is no 10 digit serial number stamped on the rear of the watch jaws lug.

There is no 'O' ring on the screw in crown.

The case back is not right, there should be an etched Planet logo (see mine) and a red anti tamper seal.

The Seacreature 'hippokampoi' is not crisp or raised enough.

The engraving on the clasp is rough too.

The main differance if you part with your money is the fact that they break/fail/ingress water/etc and you have no comeback.

By all means buy one, you may get a good one, but you may not.

Ive seen so many people disappointed with their new purchases when they fail.

NOTE: I have seen a replica SeaMaster with the AR coating, serial number and etched Planet logo, $600 was given for it.(Yet the reason I saw it was because it was broken, the rotor screw had sheared off flush with its housing.)

Why buy a fake?

You'll always know you're a cheap loser.

If thats your opinion, fine. I wouldn't wear a fake personally, but if people want to thats their lookout. In fairness, it doesn't necessarily make them a cheap loser. Maybe they really love the "look" of the watch but can't find a sterile rep? I remember my uncle wore a fake Rado for ages, not because it was a fake Rado (He didn't even know it was a replica!) he just wore it because he liked the thin watch!

This thread was started because I wanted to learn something to be hones, IE how close are the reps? Could you pass a rep off as genuine?

I'm more interested in protecting myself from inadvertantly buying a replica and thinking it was real. . . .

I've seen some nice watches for sale in second hand shops and on the net but I'd be extremely dubious buying one because I'm afraid of being duped!

Fair play, I could do with your mobile number (Joking!)

I went to York on a stag do in July, and in a (nice) second hand shop, there was a s/steel Datejust, 1995. Looked 100% gen, book, box, tags, weight felt right etc, minor desk-diving marks on clasp etc. It was up for £1495 and the guy in the shop said he'd take £1100 cash.

I was sorely tempted, but I just couldn't risk it. I reckon I could tell a fake Tag because I've got a few, but rolex? I just don't know enough "tells" to spot a real one (YET!)

Looking at the pic of the Submariner, I would have said that was genuine if someone had it on their wrist.

The Planet Ocean looks very close to gen from what I've seen in Beaverbrooks window!

So what, I already knew that !

I have a decent house in a nice area, all payed for, three kids at private school but not much spare for trinkets like that, maybe in the future but for now a replica would do, im not proud !

Anyway, loads of people buy these on the drip, have a huge mortgage and go round flashing it as they are loaded, I owe nobody anything and wouldnt take a loan out, so whats worse a fully paid for fake or a real one on credit ? - not a dig at you Yoza BTW.

OMG This is gettng ridiculous.

Same guy, but these are a little more "obscure" replica's. I'd never tell one of these because I've never seen a real one!

i quite like the idea of fakes tbh, a friend bought me back a fake rolly form China a few years ago, I started to wear it instead of my TAG for a bit of a change

anyway after about a month we got burgled, my TAG was safely put away -- but the fake Rolly was on the Dinning Room table --we were out to lunch with friends, not sure why I didn't have it on

but it did make me laugh to think of the muppet who picked it up off the table -- he must have really thoughth he had a result

I like those Graham Oversized Chronofighters, I was in a Jewellers at Alderley Edge when Ronaldo ordered one.

I didnt get to see the watch though.

I like that fact that the pushers are on the opposite side of the watch, ie they face up your arm, not to your fingers.

It needs a date window though.

Your mate is certainly after a sale, isnt he.......how many pics is he going to send you before he snares you.

Yep! Graham Oversized Chronofighters do have a date window at 7 O'clock so that immediately looks wrong. The hour hand is missing its Lume and 1000ft is under "diver" on the genuine model.

Have you noticed on the Graham that there are large dings/dents on the pusher mounts, that have been touched up with a black marker.

If thats his promo shot, its not up to much.

Im not slaggng the guy off, but there is something a bit wrong with selling these watches, its all a bit shadey DelBoy to me.

Just for curiosity, those of you who are thinking of buying a replica watch, are you doing it to pass it off as the real thing ?

If not, are you buying it because you like the style of the original, but not the price.

Or another reason ?

I believe if you want to quietly pass a replica off as the real thing, you should by a model that is not mainline/common...ie Submariner/SuperOcean/SeaMaster.

You should go for something a little less common...ie Graham/IWC/Panerai.

I dont think quietly passing a decent fake off as the real deal is a crime of the century, but obviously if your doing it to con people out of money, its totally wrong.

Whos business is it anyway ?

I firmly believe that 6 out of 10 people I meet who notice my watches, think they are blag anyway, especially if they need to ask how much it was.

It usually goes a bit like this..

" How much....you didnt pay that much for a feckin watch ! ".......

" Err, well actually I did. "

" Your feckin mad, I paid £12 for this digi in Argos and does exacty the same as yours."

" Yes but does yours start conversations like this? Oh look theres my Taxi, see ya ? "

If I were to buy a replica watch I would certainly not want to pass it off a the real deal. Even if the person I was lying to knew no different I would still know I was being a ****.
I would however consider a replica if I thought the genuine article was so overpriced that I could not justify the cost yet the design of the watch grabbed me.

Oh, I also noticed the hack job on the Graham copy but didn't bother mentioning it as even my blind uncle, blind Billy would have seen that

Well I have just ordered a fake Tag Heuer Monaco.............

Now I'm not bothered if everyone knows its a fake and I certainly won't hide that fact. I just really like the deisng and I'd certainly not have £1600 spare for a watch.
I also like the idea of having a few different watches. I currently have 3 but the most expensive of them was £150:

I have a decent Flat, in a nice area, all payed for. No kids. Car payed for and no debt's whatso ever.

I wouldn't take out a loan to buy something either. Yet I have a real Breitling. Would never buy anthing fake. Been offered loads over the years. There is something satisfying about earning/saving, working hard to buy/afford the nice things in life. Be it an expensive watch or a car.

Thats true but having said that, i wouldnt want to pay a four figure sum for a real breitling or whatever else. I appreciate the looks of an expensive watch but for me, its still just a watch.

If i can get that "look" for a fraction of the price and not have the worry about losing, scratching it, etc then a replica watch would do me just fine.

Like Yoza said, i wouldnt go for the rolex type of watch just to avoid answering the same old question every time someone claps their eyes on it... is it real?

Ive just been sizing a ladies DateJust, while I was at it I noticed my " no hoper box ", these are watches Ive been given to repair, but have died on the operating table.

This isnt a show of my inept watch fixing skills, as I would say I fix 7 out of 10 replicas, these come from work/friends/friends of friends etc.

The owners have let me keep the corpses for the hell of it, now most are rubbish, but some are swiss 25 jewel, Ive posted to show how they **** up....and often.
