I'm going to look at the water temp sensor in a bit guys, was wondering though i'm gonna find it and then be like "sooo what the hell do i do with it now"
I'm guessing there is no way of testing it and i don't have a spare one.
Are they expensive to buy?

Found the sensor and took it off and cleaned it up, didn't make a difference though but worth a try i guess.
Gonna buy that sensor, change it and see what happens.
If your scooby has starting issues from warm or cold, runs lumpy or uses excessive amounts of fuel then chances are this sensor is playing up. Even if you have no problem for the cost its worth changing at a major service interval to make sure fueling is spot on (with fue lprices rising daily)
The above sounds like mine, lumpy, drinking fuel and the cold starting. I hope this is it!!!

scooby 87, does your engine want to nearly stall when still warming up e.g. when coming to junctions, etc.? Do the symptoms get better, or go away, when up to temp?
If so, these are classic symptoms of a knack'd CTS - so hopefully you will indeed fix it with a new one (about £27-35).

No, it stalls without fail at first startup of the day, and then feels a bit lumpy/laggy untill properly warm. When its warm everything is fine though.
Once it has been started once it doesn't try to stall at junctions or anything though.

Yeah, the'y're still symptoms of a knacke'd CTS - just yours must be pretty badly gone, as it's actually stalling when cold, but okay when up to temp. I'm confident that a new one will sort it.
When you do change it, do an ECU reset bfore running the engine. It may just help in clearing any 'badly' learnt overfuelling from when the old CTS was playing up.

Hmm didn't really go to plan, fitted the sensor now and went to do a ecu reset as per jollygreenmonster and it didn't start first time. But i'm thinking maybe this is because the ecu hasn't been reset yet?
Is there a way to reset the ECU without starting the engine? (apart from leaving the battery off for however long)
++ I did the ECU reset as per JGM and when the EML is supposed to flash to indicate the ECU has been reset it flashed an error code instead.
A error code of 43 which i can't seem to find? bugger!

Accelerator pedal switch apparently is what that code is .. hmm ??? Also i just read the ecu again and its not displaying any error codes?
Could this error code be caused by the reset process? It didn't happen on my first ever ECU reset, but that was on another ECU maybe there is a difference?
Sorry for all the questions i'm going on about now.

And it doesn't have any error codes displayed now either?
LOL it continues.

same problem here. changed cts and still have the problem, cold starts are a mare. it tries to stall and then picks up and then tries to stall....when its warm its fine.
get a smell of petrol sometimes too when cold but this could just be cause of the fact its richer when cold. i have also tried cleaning out the idle control valve. others have suggested lambda. i have no fault codes.

First cold start with new CTS in place and ecu reset done and..... it was actually worse, but i'm guessing thats because its colder now.
Stalled on first key turn, on second start attempt revs were all over the place trying to stall, but eventually it got control.
Any ideas now guys

I dunno, but i'm thinking its probably contributing to a few of my general running issues and hopefully the starting problem aswell.
I've seen on on ebay for £20
Would this be worth getting lads?

I have no suggestions I'm afraid, but thought I'd let you know I'm in the same boat. The car (MY97) stalls on the first try, then the second try is generally ok after a bit of sputtering and me pressing the accelerator.
For me, it has suddenly gotten worse in the last couple of weeks, coinciding with the colder and damper weather. I had similar problems in the summer on cold damp mornings, and when I start it later in the day if it's had some sun on it, it is generally a lot better (i.e. doesn't stall).
I think it is moisture related.
