Congratulations Liverpool!

From a non-biased Newcastle supporter its great to see Liverpool back where they belong. I grew up watching them demolish European competition when I was a nipper!

What a game! - Bloody marvellous!

I'm not sure which I was happier to see; Liverpool winning, or just the sight or Gerard Houllier on the Liverpool bench

Second phase...
Won 1 game in 6
Drawn 4 in 6
Scored 4 and conceded 4 - GD = 0
As Roma won 1 in 6 and drew 4, scored 6, conceded 5 so GD = +1.
Says it all really.

Gerard Houllier returned to Anfield to inspire Liverpool into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Spurred on by the presence of their manager to the dug-out for the first time in five months , the Reds secured the two-goal victory needed to progress thanks to Jari Litmanen's early penalty and Emile Heskey's second-half header.

It takes Liverpool through to the last eight, and a clash with Real Madrid, Deportivo or Manchester United, and while that seems like a tough task, their defence is strong enough to keep them in any game.

After all, this may have been Liverpool's first win in the second phase of the Champions League, but they only lost once in a group featuring three tough sides and earned creditable draws in Roma and Barcelona.

Once again, Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz were in inspired form, keeping Argentinian hitman Gabriel Batistuta so quiet that he was dragged off at half-time, while a trio of Italian internationals failed to trouble goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.

The home side got off to a blistering start, going ahead after just six minutes when Jari Litmanen stroked home a penalty. Danny Murphy was lining up a shot just inside the penalty area when Assuncao clipped his heel. Referee Rune Pedersen had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Litmanen made no mistake.

John Arne Riise, playing in midfield, had confidence in abundance and was willing to shoot from all angles. One ferocious volley was parried by goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli, while an angled howitzer forced the stopper into another wonderful save.

Roma rarely threatened in the first-half and manager Fabio Capello brought on in-form striker Vincenzo Montella and wide man Marco Delvecchio. Immediately, they had more thrust about them, yet whenever they picked their way through the Reds' massed ranks, one of the back four would recover with a fine saving tackle.

The one time they didn't manage to block the Italians' shots, Dudek came to the rescue. Delvecchio squeezed a shot towards goal and, although unsighted by Abel Xavier, the Polish goalkeeper stretched his foot to the ball to deflect it behind for a corner.

That was as good as it got for Roma and then in two special minutes on the hour, Liverpool secured their progress. Firstly, Barcelona scored in Istanbul, meaning that the Reds' one-goal lead would be enough, but Heskey made sure that Roma couldn't come back.

Damiano Tommasi, who was dismissed at Anfield when the teams met in last season's UEFA Cup, went into the referee's book for hauling back Litmanen and from the free-kick, Heskey powered Riise's cross into the bottom corner.

Cue Anfield party-time and the Reds played out the rest of the time with ease. They go on - and are confident that they can go all the way - while Roma, the final Serie A team remaining, crash out.

In an emotionally-charged Anfield last night, Liverpool (that once famous team of the 70's) played against type and actually won a game in the Champions League qualifying stages.
Having failed to do that previously, the return of the Bug-Eyed one and Pinnochio (what a combination ) and a full house ( remember, it was only earlier this season that Anfield was not sold out for those "special" European matches ) lifted Liverpool from the torpor of previous matches and that oh-so-famous 1-9-1 formation, to new heights (well, they managed to score anyway!).
Assistant manager Thompson then went and spoilt it all by saying : " We fear no-one and we can now go on and win this competition"

Bring it on!!

Well done Liverpool! A real trip back to the great nights of old in Europe, and so pleased about Houllier, a really decent man.

...And I'm a Saints supporter, but have a soft spot for the reds as they provided so much pleasure to the country throughout their Euro glory days in the 70's and 80's, always a friendly club, and with self-effacing yet brilliant managers, also they are a dock city side too.

That's better - a bit of friendly banter.
We'll probably miss each other in the QF draw and Red kop will have to be satisfied with beating us but not winning much

Can you see the Mancs doing anything like this?

Liverpool fans once again proved they are the best in the world last night with another astonishing show of colour, noise and passion throughout the memorable 2-0 victory over Roma.
As the two teams entered the arena before kick-off a special mosaic was unveiled on the Kop, spelling out the word "Allez" next to the Liverbird. It was a special sight on a special night.

Ooh, don't get me started - I'm just leaving work..
"Best fans in the world..." - would that be the same ones who, not long ago, were calling for Houllier's head and booing your team off the pitch??
