To be fair here, I don't think Daz is suggesting you make it easy for theives, but more don't be too silly in trying to protect a car.

I'd be horrified if our car got stolen, and I certainly wouldn't leave an open invitation for any thief, but I can totally see his point. If you are asleep in bed, and thieves come in, you (even if you wake up) are at a disadvantage, in that they are prepared, you are half asleep. I don' think I could take on people when I'm wide awake, yet alone woken up in the night.

There is only so much anyone can do to protect their car etc. CCTV is probably a good start/ lights/decent alarm on car and house. Deter people as much as possible and hope it's enough.

If anyone here fancies being the hero... good luck to them is what I say, how many times have you heard about people doing similar and end up on a slab, be it confronting burglars or a few p*ssed up louts/youths? Or the other end of the spectrum, the offender becomes the victim and the original victim ends up doing a stretch at HM's Pleasure for assault or worse....!

A bit back at our old house I got woken up in the middle of the night and GENUINELY thought someone was in the house, I jumped up out of bed, slammed myself against the bedroom door and got the misses ready to dial 999. I had an old broom handle by the side of the bed, a hunting knife in one of the bedside units (along with loads of other crap, not there for the purpose for defense!) and the last thing on my mind was strutting downstairs being the hard man. I crapped it, and was 100% focused on no one hurting my misses... by not getting in!

Normally, if I'm out in town or something, I'd quite happily stand up for myself and am not worried about getting into a scrap with some drunken toe rag if it really came to it. But as Daz says, when its comes to someone or some people that arent afraid to come into a house where they know the occupants are present, you're dealing with a different sort of character and its just not worth it.

As I already said earlier, I want as many visible deterrents as possible, but if they really want it that bad to get into the house, I don't want them upstairs. Simple.

Well aren't you a right hard man then!

Fair enough if that's your opinion and you think you'd do it, but either way you still won't have your pride an joy at the end of it, because you'll be in the slammer for murder.
Whether right or wrong, your no-longer the victim in the eyes of the law.

LOL yes mate, of course you would.

You'd be woken up in the middle of the night with a proper smack in the mouth and or a knife to your throat. You'll open your eyes to find yourself surrounded by three maybe four blokes more than likely wearing balaclavas. It will take you a while to wake up properly and you're saying you'll be able to take them all out?? This isn't a film fella.

The reality is you'd wake up after being punched in the face and see these masked blokes and then you'd probably **** yourself with fear, literally.

Any numpty that thinks he's going to end up a winner in this situation will probably end up on a slab.

GET REAL!!

the minority of us who are prepared to have a pop seem to get mocked and the people mocking seem to think every theif has a gang like in the movies, most people who break into your house are little ******* who wouldnt have the ***** to wake you up let alone challenge for anything,so leaving the keys downstairs is what they hope for.

The gangs that are tooled up wouldnt bother with a 4-6k car and aim a little higher up the market. (i`d like to think anyway) but await to be mocked again

ive read of 4 jackings/armed robbery of scoobs and all occured during the day with hammers

I'm not mocking you fella just trying to give you a reality check. I understand about not leaving keys on show that's not what I am saying to do either as you're right that is inviting the little bastids in.

AGAIN, you're missing what I am saying. I'll try again. If someone is prepared to come into your home and confront you in order to get the keys for your car then they are in a different league to the typical ******. Yes you're right about those sort of people normally aiming higher in the market but on the same token would you risk your life in order to keep a 4-6K car?

As for masked gangs being just in films don't kid yourself, It's more common than you think.

I always take my car keys and wallet upstairs at night. What sort of person leaves there valubles downstairs in case somebody breaks in, so they can take them without making much fuss? F**k that, an Englishman's home is his castle. Of course, we can always rely on the police to find these criminals....or give you a crime reference number and forget about it... And what sort of scoob is this? I've not really heard of people breaking into a house and threatening the owner of a £5000 Subaru! A Ferrari, Aston, maybe a newish M3 or Merc, but not a scooby! And I know the guy sounds dodgy, maybe he is, but there's a chance he just likes cars? I've taken photos of nice cars I've seen in a petrol station or parked on the side of the road, just the other day there was a gorgeous Nissan GTR which I snapped. That's not odd is it?

I have, several times

Worst one was a guy who went to work with his keys on him, and left the Subaru at home.
Theives broke into the house and beat the guys 70+ year old father senseless as he couldn't give them the keys.

Just because you don't hear about it yourself doesn't mean it doesn't happen

Ok breaking into a house in the middle of the night for a set of scooby keys and beating up a frail 70 year old after his son has left are two different things.

Most people i speak to wake up in the morning to find the house broken into and the car gone.

FORTUNATELY most of them don't wake up during the night, makes you wander what would happen if they did.

I friend of mine had his house broken into and they took the keys to his Audi A3. Didn't wake up during the break in fortunately.
A few days later he put his hand down the side of his sofa and found his kitchen knife down there.
Told the police and they said it's common.
They break into your house and go straight to the kitchen to get a knife, and hide it somewhere. That way if you wake up and come down the stairs they know exactly where the knife is. They'll then threaten/attack you with your own knife.

Almost all car thefts now are when the house is broken into, and it isn't the top end stuff they are after.

I just don't like the way people nowadays feel they can't defend themselves. Yeah, if there was 'a gang of blokes' I'm not gonna have a go, but I wouldn't want to be a pushover either.
Maybe I'm just lucky enough to live in a nice rural area then, where these things are extremely rare. If someone nicks a Mars Bar here we hear about it...

The sort that gives more of a f**k about his valuables that are already upstairs IE: the misses and kids... slighty more valuable and a lot harder to replace than a wallet and a car...

Doesnt the second part of your comment slightly contradict the first?

Oh and just in case you didnt read it earlier in the thread....

He is a very wealthy guy and they have a nice house and some nice motors and a state of the art alarm system, which they hadnt switched on as he hadnt gone to bed. Anyway, about 10pm, a masked gang burst into the house, held a knife to his throat, went and dragged his wife out of bed in her nighty, put a knife to her throat too. He had to open his safe, gave all the money, jewellery, took his range rover and TVR Sagaris. Fortunately, they left the two kids in bed..... The ordeal lasted about 30 mins. So, anyone up for a crack at people like that? I for one, definitely am not. Take the bloody lot for all I care.
Just like in the movies eh?

I think a lot of people are missing the point, Daz has (IMO) pointed it out quite clearly twice, and I have done the same.

Make it a right pain in the **** for them to knick but if they still want it after not being put off by CCTV, Discklok, Security light, House alarm, and they come into your house for it knowing you're in there, does that sound just like some opportunistic ******?

Is it REALLY worth risking the safety of your loved ones (if you have any ) just for the sake of saying "yeah, I take my keys to bed with me, cos when they come to burgle me and bust into my bedroom... I'll do the lot of them"

The point is this, if you take your keys to bed and they are prepared to not only break into your house, but actually come upstairs to get the keys off you... are you really of the caliber to tackle those sort of people?

Purposefully leave your car keys downstairs on the off-chance that if someone breaks in they can feel free to take the car and not cause trouble? Hmmm....not my way of thinking. Even if I had kids or 'loved ones'.

Happened to me in Dore, Sheffield a few years ago. Fortunately the old house had great big locks and hinges that only parted with the frame 1/3 of the way up the door (they threw a huge rock from the garden through it - there were two of them).

I woke up and threatened them with an ice axe through the broken glass. They left quite sharpish.

Would I have threatened them if they were in the house?? NO, no chance.

I think alot of people here are missing the point.

Nobody is insulting people for taking keys upstairs etc. but just looking at a potential situation realisticly. Nobody more vocal is even saying make it easy, but again factoring in what can happen, and how incapable people may be to defend their car or even family if put in this situation.

I could easily think we are in a position to fight off little ******* having a go, if we're wide awake, not so sure about woken in the night, and how do you even know if this is just a bunch of chancers, and not some serious tooled up gang?

Each person has their own opinion on how far to go in protecting their car/belongings, how a person would actually react when faced with that situation may be very different.

Was on crimewatch tonight if it's the same story, shocking but shows what can happen.

Didn't seem like they (the couple) expected what was to happen, but shows what theives/scum can be like.

Totally agree with some of whats being said, and of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and responsible for your own actions.

Just to pick up on what Matt says below (not having a pop fella) because I just think he's/you're missing the point slightly...

If no one breaks in, it really doesn't matter where you leave your keys does it? Of course it doesnt.

But on the off chance someone does break in, I know they wont have to come rummaging upstairs for the keys to get them, drag me and the misses out of bed (she's in her normal attire or lack off and then things take a turn for the worse... ) Just look at the case that has just been mentioned: horrific! Therefore I'm doing what I can - on the off chance

That said, it doesnt mean the keys are on display if some one peers through the letter box or looks in through a window etc.

Now, you have to remember what started this thread to put it all into context as far as my opinions/actions are concerned: My local neighborhood watch spokesperson came round and warned that a neighbor had witnessed some dodgy looking geezer, smoking a splif taking photos of speed bumps just up the road, then a photo of my scoob (and possibly, although not confirmed, more assumed I think, a VXR8). He informed the police due to some recent thefts on another estate about half a mile from us and was worried that my scoob was being added to a list of 'stolen to order' or was required as a quick car for something else... his words not mine.

Anyway, I'm hoping that it was just a stoner snapping a motor he liked and nothing more sinister than that. Pay's to air on the side of caution when you've just been informed that though....

*goes off to grab the shotgun from the cabinet...
