Mentioned that to some Greenpeace hippy who wanted me to sign his anti GM petition at Glastonbury. He couldn't counter my argument so moved onto the next group of people.

Whilst we should be careful with what we do with it I think genetic modification is really cool. As an engineer I think that being able to engineer the very building blocks of the way plants and animals are formed is the ultimate. There are endless possibilities for curing diseases, growing crops, etc.

I suspect we will see some pretty crazy stuff in the next 20 years.

I am hoping that somebody invents a "SUPER GONK EXCLUDER" that prevents stupid people from entering public spaces.

Good piece in one of the papers the other day that was predicting some upcoming stuff.

What about the ability for people to read the first OP's paragraph and understand the words 'just the one suggestion'

All cars produced for the UK will have in-built GPS tracking devices which will be monitored 24/7 by the government. This will be of course to help in the fight against terrorism.

My prediction in the next 20 years is something that presently we cannot comprehend today will be created and we will have absolutely no idea or expectation of it now. I suppose like the World Wide Web is now but in 1989 was just a proposal on a computer scientists' desk and even he had no idea what it would become.

In terms of impact though imagine trying to describe how a freezer/microwave can preserve/cook food to someone who lived and only had knowledge of the 17th century and that's the sort of size of the jump I think we are talking about.

You have only got to think of the changes in the last 20 years to realise that advancement accelerates at an increasingly faster rate. If you like gadgets then its going to be great

A few here mentioning 'nuclear fusion' as a viable technology within 20 years.
Not really got a chance in hell.

ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is only in the construction stage (started in 2008 with a 10 year build programme. Which is in its self very optimistic).
Then a 20 year test/operations programme will begin.

Even the 'very optimistic' overall fast track schedule, for commercial reactors, talks about 2050 at the earliest.

My bet for a more realisticaly available technology in the next 20 years is;
High temperature fision reactors which will 'crack water', resulting in 'cheapish', clean and plentiful hydrogen - maybe. This generation of reactors is expected by around 2030, so maybe I can just claim it to be available in 20 years
