Type 49 shelled Mexico - crap power, but the best handling in its day. Lots of sideways fun in the wet

1493cc Mini with 5 speed Coletti Francis 5 spd box that we used to run in the Castrol-Motoring News championship many moons ago

Oh and me... Lotus Elan S3 .. That was a really sweet little motor that would have beaten the CRAP out any 22B

If I were to win the lottery (don't need 2 cars at the moment), along side the 360 and 911 carrera 4 would be.... a series 2 golf GTi.

many happy sideways moments

Thumbs up

My dads old Mk1 Escort, BDA engined RS1600 rebored to 1700cc.The induction roar of the twin 40 webbers. Being broardside at 70mph on a beach in West Wales in the early 70's with yellow brick road playing on the 8 track ..... fond childhood memories

I have to agree with you GaryC two best cars I've ever driven were a 993 carrera RS, manic power delivery, awsome brakes highly involving. And a 4.5 litre Cerbera which I had for two weeks (thanks to a very kind friend)my palms didn't stop sweating for the whole two weeks, monster, monster, power

205 1.6 GTi - The most rewarding car to own and run. Modded with full race system, JR Induction, Platinum plugs etc. Very quick, great handling, brilliant reliability and comfortable. Used to do 160 mile commute in it each day and managed to get 45mpg out of it. Only spent £300 repairs during 30,000 miles.

Once had a race with a Caterham around country lanes and kept up all the way - the guy was getting really p1ssed off

Also had an MG Metro 1.3 when I was 17 and it was great Quick enough and enjoyable handling, especially on roundabouts - power on, power off, slide, power on etc A bit rusty though

best all round car I've owned is BMW523i, 6 hour drives on autobahn avarage 160KPH no problems. 996 carrera 4 tiptronic good but harsh ride on long distance and disappointing interior switches(two bob plastic).

ZX6R first time on back of a sports bike, but thats another story.

Really impressed with Integra Type R and the Elise which is just crazy in the wet .

Still close behind the Scoob on the grin stakes were the two Fiat Strada Abarth 130Tc I had. Amazing engine with great grunt and sounded like Satan himself thanks to standard twin 40s. Most ridiculous seats I've seen on a normalish car , well really good actually and better than those in the Scoob, and the handling was superb. One of the very few cars able to scare you with its abilities. Left plenty of far more exotic machinery for dead. With the twin 40s not a good car for neighbourly bliss.

You never forget your first drive in a Caterham do you? Vauxhall 2.0 16v, straight cut 'box and LSD (not the drug), and not a lot more. Still go to the Caterham stand at the Motor Show every year, stand there with a glazed look and little globs of drool hanging from the corners of my mouth, saying quietly to myself "maybe next year" whilst the salesmen quietly accompany me off the stand.

Peugeot 205 One-Nine GTi. Bought one for buttons in May last year as a cheap fill in between MY2000 and MY2001 from a lady customer. One owner with 18000 miles. By far the most fun car I have ever owned (32 and counting). Wonderful memories of slicing down the lanes, using all of that torque, heeling and toeing down the box, and all with the best steering I have ever encountered in a car. Never the fastest car, or the grippiest, but somehow it made you feel like Makinen, when really I'm a Muppet. Sold it for far more than I paid, and have cried buckets ever since. Makes my new MY2001 seem cumbersome and numb in comparison (but also fast and refined) yet gives me sleepless nights wondering why I paid many thousands more for car that I don't enjoy driving as much.

Merc E55AMG. Drove a pal's from Carlisle to St. Helens a couple of years back. Never went round a corner in it, but pulled off at every service station on the M6 and rejoined straight away, just for the surreal experience of ridiculous acceleration in total silence. On my Lottery "Must Have" list, but in estate form and without bodykit, badges or big wheels. Imagine the faces of the Nova brigade as you smoke away from the lights in a cloud of dust.

My mates mum's Morris Ital 1.7HL. As boys, it taught us all we needed to know about opposite lock.

Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution. Once borrowed one from the same pal who also owned the Merc, and 4 pals and I went to Castlefield, Manchester in the thing, looking like a load of bloody pimps or drug barons. 280bhp in a pumped up Shogun without permanant 4wd should not be allowed. Lasting memory: squirting the thing in the wet in 3rd (tiptronic autobox)at around 45mph, and tramping both rear wheels. Pure madness, but massive fun.

Impreza P1. Say no more.

Mini Cooper - so complete for it's vintage

Alfasud 1.5 - simply fabulous chassis

Porsche 911 - late '80s when they were still sports cars

Honda Accord Type R - fabulous chassis (again), ridiculous engine

Lotus Exige - guess what - fabulous chassis, not quite enough power but bluddy quick

My Scooby with run in S02s on the rims

That's it

BMW 540i - would make a nice friend on the drive for the Scoob? 0-100 < UK Scoob, 0-60 6s even with auto! 2 yr old 20000 miles some are around for £22kish. Tempted. But insurance is 18 - even worse than UK Scoob and for an under 30 that is not nice. However, wish I could try the M5, but 540 seems to be a bargain in comparison second hand. Maybe good for when something a little more relaxing is in order, as much as I love MY00.

The Mobil/Gartrac Escort Mk4 2Ltr BDT Evo 4x4 hillclimb car. If you remember it, it was the only production sports car class car to give the Pikes Peak Audi Quattro of Tom Hammond a run for its money.

It produced 470bhp and on overboost it went on to produce an incredible 640bhp. The acceleration rate of the wheels was so rapid that the car would launch itself upwards off the tarmac if you got carried away. It was eventually sold into Holland where it won the Dutch tarmac rallysprint series ahead of the 'works' cars.

It once went off the line at Barbon hillclimb and twisted the rear prop up like a piece of toffee. That prop alone was supposed to be able to take over 600bhp. it had a five speed Quaife g/box and a top speed of about 120mph. Timing the 0 to 60 was almost impossible to do and it made a WRC look positively pedestrian.

If I could find it, I would buy it, wrap it in cotton wool and live happily ever after........ They just don't come any quicker than that......or do they ?

Formula Renault - OH ****IN YES !!! I want one big stylee, downforce, slicks, mega grip, noisy, smelly, loud, vibraty. Oh yes !, I get all excited thinking about it again - this is what a *real* car should be like.

Scares the life out of you before you've even attempted to engage a gear. Ohhhh.

Ps I'll whip every single one of you round any race track you please in one of these (probably lap you) and I can't drive for toffee. incredible.

Also

Porsche 968CS drove round Goodwood, I wanted to take that home not my Scoob it's even better than everyone says (much much better than a 911 IMHO) I am gutted that I own a Scoob and not one of these Just the most amazingly neutral handling, grunty engine, perfectly adjustable, smooth, well engineered - total opposite to the Scoob. I just don't know how Porsche do it.

Porsche Boxter S - See above but newer a bit faster and with no roof. Handling very similar, but only 5 gears (that I could find).

I'm 23 now but since 17 I have owned or ran:

Subaru Justy GLII - Quite cool and would seriously beat Nova SRs!

VW Corrado - The 1st car I bought at 18, the legend lives on in my memory.

Ford Fiesta 1.4 Si - What the ==== was I thinking?

Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi - 160BHP, fun but hard work!

Rover 600GSi - OK I ran this for about 2 months.

Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec 3dr - Cool, good throttle steer! Great handling, quite good engine!

Subaru Impreza Turbo 98MY 5dr - My dads car but I use it regularly. - Wow probably the best all round car ever imoa.

Honda Integra Type R - I bought this brand new last year and ran it for two months. I never really rated it though, I think I expected too much, engine annoyed me, it sounded nice (rung out) but was ultimately a race car which needed the nackers revved off it. The handling didn't impress either. Neither did the fact the value was going down like a french *****! Can I say that? Oh well just did - sorry!

I swapped the Integra for a Puma Millenium (Yellow with leather recaros!) I love the way you can get in the car, extract everything out of both the chassis and engine, and it keeps up with cars it really shouldn't! I rate it as a better fwd car than the integra, so much fun, it has a better top end too upto 130mph!

During my driving life the other highlights would be:

Rolls Royce Silver Cloud? (1st car I ever drove when I was 14)

BMW M3 - Not upto an Imp! But nice

Jaguar XJS - Second car I drove

Impreza STi - Smelt of japanese pee!

Astra GTE - 1st car I ever drove by myself!!!

Renault Clio 172 - Probably the closest thing to a scoob???

The thing is now the old scoob has passed, I will be looking for another new car in the next 6 months, but what is there?

Yeah the WRX is ok, but it's lost too much of it's character etc.

The EVO VII would be nice but how much?

TT - Too small

V6 4 Motion golf? - Id get bored i think!

X- Type - 9 month wait already!

I really am in the position of not knowing which car to go for, there is nothing like the scoob anymore.

I have real fond memories of the previous motor to my scooby - a '93 Nissan 200sx.
Chipped, with full stainless exhaust and an induction kit - very hairy rear wheel drive action in the wet !!!!

The most awsome thing I have ever been in is Mike R's Cossie. Hell that thing is quick and it only had 420 bhp at the time god knows what 500bhp will feel like.

Well, my MY97Scoob was one hell of a car, even my girl acknowledges that, and possibly one of the best allrounders I've had.

The EVO VI was awesome in breaking, grip, handling, and acceleration, but hard as hell, with no folding seats, and grim fuel consumption( my right foot is heavy ).

The 306 Rallye is one of the most entertaining driver's cars I've had, no doubt.

The Integra Type-R is fantastic, handles beautifully, goes like stink( about the same perfomance as my Subaru, surprisingly ).

The Corrado VR6 was a stonker, sounded beautiful, and handled well.

My mate's 911 Turbo S, chipped to over 500bhp, is just brutal.

Another friend lent me his race prepped Westfield 2 litre, entirely clad in carbon fibre with one seat only, and this has to be the most awesome thing I've come across.
