No matter what car you own there will probably be one faster. I know off a fiat 126 that would do 90% off the cars on here (in a straight line lol)

lol, my 172 used to wipe the floor with wrx's as did my xsara vts even scared a couple of evos with the xsara. When i bought mine i was expecting a lot more from the car. I've only had it a few months and tbh i really hate the thing. Its far too lardy, well under powered and needs what i see a good 3-4k throwing at it to make it what i would consider half decent. So that renders the car totally pointless to me.

I think a classic would be better suited to me, but even then it would need 400brake to please me. I just find them boring, i even took out a bugeye sti and again i didnt like it.

My old sti could quite easily beat a 197 in a straight line, my uk classic though is a different matter.

Default surprise by a 197?

Alright guys, just going to add my pennies worth to the thread. IMO standard rs clio v standard WRX, not a whole lot between them! I remember going to head to head with WRX in my 182 a few years ago, and not to put too fine a point, the WRX driver was left more than a little surprise!

I now own a 197..it is slightly heavier than 182, but a bit more power, better brakes and suspension...it will stick to the road. You need to drive these cars hard to get the most out of them...but 197 will rev to in around 8000rpm.

I remember taking a WRX out for test drive and after 5000rpm...gutless! very disappointing...although the initial accelaration was pretty good. 5 speed gear box...nah, just didn;t really do it for me. I actually went with the intention of buying a WRX...but left very disappointed.

anyway...different classes of cars. people enjoy different things. I would like to see the 197 with a bit more power as well, but the handling makes it the car for me.

200brake/per ton

with lightened fly, lightened pullys, Air con removed and a course of weight loss.

However, a little lotus exige totally wasted the xsara but that was a bright orange and he was killing bikes at the same time lol.

I know of novas who show evos up on track at coombe, However i did a day at donnington and there was a classic which was realllllllly quick around the track, he gave a CLIO 197 CUP car a good run for his money which was nice to see.

I let a 182 past in my sti before reeling him in, I can still see the look of confusion on his face as I went past

I would not say they are crap cars though, they do handle well for fwd and can be picked up cheap these days. Although they have probably been ragged to death.

I think i'm with you on this one! Fairy dust an NOS in the tank of the vectra wouldn't make up for the 2tons an 4 passengers.

I used to have a 120d m sport, re-mapped an dyno'd at 218bhp with 380ft-lb's and it wouldn't stick with mt friends 182, until maybe 80-90mph the torque of the diesel would start to win over. That was with one up in each car.

Sold the 120d an bought a DCCD blob sti

These threads always make me laugh.

To convincingly beat another car, you'll need at least 50bhp/tonne better power to weight. The little Clio has, what, 160 bhp per tonne? That means to convincingly beat on in a straight line, you're gonna need about 210bhp/tonne, which means that the little Clio will be giving lots of cars a hard time!

I note that even the pint sized clio lacks the power to weight of the classic Impreza though. well over a decade on and Subaru's original vision for a performance car still looks competitive.....if only they could produce something as class leading today!

Impreza's are clearly the fastest cars in the world... apart from that one I video'd having a play against my Clio on ITB's (Scooby also modded) which I well and truely spanked into the middle of next week. 160'000+ people had the pleasure of watching a Scooby get utterly owned by a Clio.

It wouldn't be so funny if the owners weren't so defensive and narrow minded

These days I wont even waste the petrol playing with you or the Evo lot, sure there are some really quick Scoobs out there, but I'm yet to see one on the road, so I'll just stick to chasing semi supercars.

Beat an Impreza in a straight line and it was off boost.
Beat an Impreza round a twisty lane or track and it's not had the drop links replaced.

Yawn

Worth pointing out that most people are a bit precious and competitive about their performance car! It's not exclusively a rice rocket owner trait.

Some, however, like me, are realistic and concede that in all probability there are faster cars out there!

That said mine does have 270 bhp per tonne (and an even better torque to weight ratio) so most Clios aren't a problem

I drive a Hawkeye STI 361/412 and I couldn't get away from one of these on the bends yesterday was bloody surprising!

Then when we got on the straight and I hesitated it shot off past me, finally caught back up when it was in traffic but again couldn't keep with it. Remembered why I don't drive the misses 1.2 Punto often now

lol, well I'm never one to miss a good windup and this thread is priceless hehe

I can see by the response after yours that it's not sat very well already lol

Banny, best of 10 runs then and I'll call the AA for you?

Like I said, sure there are some very quick cars, but considering my 172's cost to buy and mod, I could have bought a standardish similar aged Impreza for the same money and been bored to death with sluggish power and wallowing ditch finding understeer.

New scooby - I only have 260bhp/ton, enough to keep up with a 4200GT Maseratti 0-120+mph though

Let's be honest - what this thread amply demonstrates is that when you have 2 cars whose performance is vaguely comparable on a twisty road, the main determinant in who will be top dog is the skill/bottle of the drivers.

I have a 410bhp Blobeye and on the straight can leave most things for dead. I am a competent but not brilliant driver; on a fast winding A-road near here (one that I'm familiar with), I caught and eventually overtook a Porsche Carrera 4S (yes, he was trying!) even though his was undoubtedly the superior car. Conversely, a couple of weeks ago I couldn't shake off an old Astra GSI turbo - everytime I left him on any straight sections, he reeled me in on the bends! Turns out it was being driven by a local guy here who's a great driver with a rallying background - he showed me the importance of driver skill! My next upgrade will be to get myself on a Don Palmer car handling course

brilliant lol

we can all however generalise, Scooby's are the car choice of the council estate chav that couldn't afford the insurance or running costs of an Evo, probably the type of person (not too dissimilar from yourself) who had little to no education and fails to correctly spell things that are already written out in front of them

400bhp is about typical Subaru owner estimates on here. I'm guessing you upped da boost, put an airfilter, decat and backbox on and hey presto it's a supercar?

Banny - Impressive! Dyno Dynamics too, however, dont they just make up calculated losses? 600bhp in a Scoob is about 200bhp at the wheels? :P
