Help please - Private Car Clampers!!

The building next to me at work employs cowboy clampers, and quite a few people who were caught asked me if we could remove the clamp (illegally) so we tried.
Unfortunately these clampers know their stuff & pass the chain through the suspension & wishbone so none of this "undo the wheel nuts" talk works unless you leave most of your suspension there.
I suspect you can cut the clamp off as its going to be your word against theirs, I heard that unless they take a polaroid photo of the clamped car then they have no proof of it being clamped.....worth a gamble I'd say.

Most clamping companies take photographs... Camdem and westminster do. They use digital cameras. My understanding is that they cannot use this evidence in court unless the operator of the camera and the downloader has certain qualifications in relation to digi photography .
Well something like that!!!

Can clampers not be paid by cheque? Politely hand over the cheque then phone bank stop the cheque (£7) it would be interesting to see how far a company would push to get their money.

OK, lets get a bit silly...
If you remove the clamp, say by completely destroying the thing using an angle grinder, and drive off - what crime/charges do you leave yourself open to??
Surely the clampers will have to prove criminal damage, and that it was you that did it. Unless they have a video of you trashing the clamp, they haven't got a leg to stand on!

It might not be necessary to completely destroy the clamp to get it off. Some are secured by one or more padlocks. If you cut them off and replace them with new ones, it should be loads cheaper than the release fee....

How about staging the same thing again (turn car around slowly) and have some stood on the otherside of the road videoing...
Or even better a camera in his car so the sound of the driver disturbing/distracting him could be picked up etc...
Then mail in to TRading standards, local MPs, pub, watch dog, company head office etc...

Some years ago I was clamped by similarly unscrupulous merchants.
My partner at the time was working in a Police station and asked the coppers what they would recommend doing.
They said that cutting the chains, and buying a replacement chain for the clampers is the ideal solution (assuming you can get chain cutters without a car)

Seeing as everone is getting at this anyway, I will tell you about one of my mates who leaves in his boot
1/ a Fcukoff big pair of bolt croppers
2/ Hefty padlock and key.
if he gets clamped he removes the clamp by destroying the padlock then leaves the one in his boot in place with the key in the lock.
If he is feeling vindictive he leaves it in the exact same place it would have been if it had still been round the wheel.
astraboy.
P.S. if people want wind ups for the companies in question I can supply them (although I do not suggest in any way that you use them )

A good friend of mine works for customs & excise as a tax evasion investigator. Let me know off-line the name of the clamping company and I'll see if he can arrange for the clamping company to be visited. Maybe the pub also would like an investigation...
