anyone with a 2.5 think their not revvy?
i cant see a 2.1. or 2.2 being any advantage on a road car just bragging rights
if you need to drive it on the road a 2.5 is the way to go they aint crazy expensive and the sky is the limmit as far as power goes depends what you want to spend
my oppinion
not cheap but very good ZEN

IMHO the sort of people you should be going to that have a deserved good reputation to keep up and are well known, give a ****e about good service, and will do a technically very good job are Zen Performance, Roger Clark Motorsport and Powerstation. ZP and RCM do time attack and equally are superb at what they do with a Subaru, Powerstation did TA series once to prove a point and won it. They also do all the spanner work and mapping for Litchfield's Type 25 cars.....very good at what they do. All the above IMHO should be your first port of call and regarded as the benchmark. Talk to these guys first then talk to the rest and see what you think.
The people i would go to keep things very quiet and aren't famously well known because they don't market the fact and there's good reasons for that, but in all honesty they don't need to. Those in the know....know!! They are masters of what they do and i know if i wanted an engine built for purpose i would go to those i know. Sorry i can't be more specific but having their names advertised over the forums is not something they particularly want otherwise every Tom, Dick, or Harriet will be ringing them.

A 2.1 is just a better road motor than a straight forward re-build, improved spool-up of the turbo and better low end torque, plus the 8000 rpm potential for a bit of a laugh on track.

What age and model of car do you have, what sort of usage are you looking for, what sort of power level are you aiming for, how much do you have to spend (both on the engine itself, and any supporting mods the car might need - e.g. gearbox/brakes/etc)?
With answers to questions like that we have a chance of giving you ideas that are relevant to what you want to do. Without, if you just want "ideas" without any specific structure, probably the best thing to suggest is for you to have a good look at the projects forum.

Are you telling us you've got an STi8 with a six speed box, or that you need to include one in your build budget, or...? If you have the car, is it a Type UK or a Jap?
If you don't include pertinent info in your posts, it's hardly surprising that you've spent most of this thread bttt'ing it, as you make it almost impossible for anyone to give you constructive advice.
Blimey, don't want much do you? If the numbers EngineTuner gave you scared you off, chances are you're going to be equally averse to the sort of quote any other builder is likely to give you. Genuine drivability and 500bhp takes a bit of doing, and isn't generally compatible with the word "cheap".

Well 500 hp as 400 is easy on this ... Want it drivable ... Budget same as everyone else cheep as reliably possible

I'd guess that a 2.1 with a turbo to do 450 bhp would end up around £4500 plus labour to pull/replace the lump.....
Talk to Alan @ EngineTuner, I did. Still saving up for xmas.

If you have an STI just fit the MD321T/S206 or similar with some bigger injectors and a re-map.
Will see around 450 if yours is sound. Way cheaper too !

A std V8 STi will handle 400bhp all day long without breaking into a sweat. I've heard of several STi's with std internals making over 500bhp and in daily use for a couple of years but clearly they are living on borrowed time. The V8 is very strong for a std engine and worth playing around with until it breaks....then get a rebuild!!
For now get yourself an MD321T and some 650cc or 710cc injectors, a proper fuel pump and AFPR and a remap. It will make 450bhp no probs on the standard ECU and will be a properly quick road car!!

very interesting thoughts guys but ive got this bloody 500 hp in my mind now
And dont you have to grind some of the block off for a md turbo and thought 555 was better one now

You don't need big bhp to be quick.....you need a car that handles like it's on rails!! There are lots of big bhp cars out there that can't put the power down, get round corners properly or slow down quickly enough.
Being quick in a straight line is OK but anyone and their monkey can do that all day long. What happens when you get to a bend??!! You slow down because you bricked it knowing fully well your car won't get round that quick or you just don't have the confidence in yourself to push it!!
Driver training is very important. None of us are driving gods (although we all think we are) so go and see an instructor who'll sharpen up your skills and make you into a better, safer and quicker driver!!
Powerstation a few years back put together a T/A car with about 650bhp. It was their first attempt at T/A and they won the series. They beat cars with a shedload more power than they had...Why??...Because they got the handling right and they had a good driver!! Power isn't everything!!

^^ true, A well driven car with 400-450 can often be faster than a much higher powered car when it comes to the twisty stuff, For a circuit car yes big power rules but on the road it can be a different story, Like i said way too many people on here get hung up on numbers too easily..

The "grinding" is a minor problem, once the original is out of the way, the MD/555/S206 are all VERY similar, it's down to your choice as no tuner has yet tried all three on the same engine.
If 400-ish will do I'll wander down the M1 and let you see how mine goes.....
dunx
P.S. Mine's due for a refresh and I'd like 420+ from a 2.1, but only to max. out the H on mine.
