only have yourselves to blame. my sister married a dawn saff english boy. the self righteous, smug, we are better than anyone else look i could quite happily slap all day. At 6ft 4", built like a brick ****house he wears the air like the world owes him something.
Sorry but my liking for the english has been tainted by family, and i am not tarring you all with the same brush, but the ones i meet and talk to all seem to have this air of self satisfied smugness ( you know the "i am better than you")
Anyhoo what if the OPs car buyer brings over a wad of £100 notes. We got three banks over here that issue them. Would love to see his face.

Tarring all us English with the same brush, that makes you lot all leprechauns doesn't it? ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
Getting back to the original topic, I always thought you had to take any Sterling note, I've taken many types of Stirling notes and never had an issue, If I don't take the note then somebody else will.
Also, no matter where the note comes from they still use the same anticounterfeit measures like raised ink, hologram, silver line, water mark, ultra violet features etc

when you are buying anything i.e. from shop, the shopkeeper can refuse any payment -- it is their simple right, whether its English, Scottish, Irish or Zimbabwean currency - the term "legal tender" means diddly squat (see sticky mickey post on dodgy £20's)
when you have a debt - as in the case of getting your car washed, then going to pay, the owner cannot refuse payment of that debt in "legal tender" - in this case Bank of England notes. (but maybe not in coins - see below)
He would be within his/her rights to refuse any other banknotes as settlement of that debt - full stop.
so technically the Tax Man would be in their rights to refuse payment of a £100.00 tax bill in 10p pieces --- beacuse it is not "legal tender" - get it
The legal tender amount for 10p pieces is listed on the bank bags btw
so legal tender has nothing to do with the validity of a note/currency -- as in the above example you could go to a bank with your 10p's and get £10.00 notes to pay the tax bill.
it really is that simple
when you strip it all away bank notes are just a "confidence trick" in the true meaning of the term

Yes, all Londoners are big headed and you've never met a good one yet, great, thanks for that sweeping generalisation, my little green, Guiness drinking, limerick reciting Irish friend.

Hodgy, I understood that the first time it was quoted, I now know differently, no need to quote it again.

I hate people calling me Irish because i'm from Northern Ireland. At best I am Northern Irish, at worst I am British.
