you could get your wagon up to 400 plus but it would cost you ![Cry2](images/smilies/cry2.gif)
my car let go on me and blew a massive hole in the engine so i needed a re-build
i decided as i always wanted a 400bhp car so went down the route of a forged 2.1 cdb which in itself is not masivley expensive it's the 6 speed gearbox, injectors, turbo, up-rated brakes, ecu etc etc that really pushed the price up. i should think i'ts cost me the wrong side of 8-10k and i got some bargins along the way.
in hind sight i could have got myslef a newage sti and modded that to 400bhp but i wanted to stick with the classic so i'm fairly happy with mine.
one thing i would say is it's never enough you get used to it so quickly, my car is fun but then when it ran 320 ish before it blew up it was also just as much fun just in a different way.
i'd stick with what you've got for now as you've already shelled out for a re-build it's still a quick car don't forget that and get carried away with chasing numbers.![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)

You have the right gearing & suspension for UK roads, leave it be.
You are welcome to drive mine, but I don't think you will like it & as a daily driver its not much fun at the minute due to the coilovers. You have got a quick car that is very practical, my advice is either keep it & enjoy it or buy a newer version STI & mod to 400bhp - they are much stronger cars out of the box than a uk classic - even if you buy a classic sti you will still be spending big bucks on a 6 speed or PPG box if you decide to go for big power.

I eventually sold my green 99 a couple of years ago after much trying.
Harder to shift than herpes.
Green owners love the colour, everyone else thinks it's gash.
I loved it, but swore never to buy another green car![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
£3k max btw

Classic = sti's + better engines, more power, better spec i.e eletric folding mirrors, eletric ariel, mapped for super fuels and you can get them in white, best colour for any jap car imo.

If you buy a classic sti you will gain in a few areas but it's not really worth it unless you buy a type R in my opinion. You will get better value for money with a bugeye sti. Alright, they are a marmite car to some people, personaly I like them, but if you buy one I don't think you will be dissapointed. You will get the much stronger 6 speed box, forged engine, aluminium bonnet, better build quality & a nicer interior.

The classic sti box is no stronger than your uk box. The bigeye sti is a stronger, better built car in every way. Now I'm not saying I don't love my classic but the bugeye is a better base to start from if you are on a budget & looking to go over 400bhp. The type r is the same as any other sti, it has a dccd gearbox(no stronger just variable centre diff) and 2 doors, oh & no abs IIRC.

just one bit of advice, before you set your heart on a v4 sti remember the v3/4 cars cannot be re-mapped you would need to purchase an after market ecu (ie; around £1k)
so in all likely hood you can run the equiv power all day long as yours is mappable.
unless you go down the ecu route of course.

A guy local to me had a green MY00 saloon. Looked after it very well and it was over 100K miles. I don't think it made £2K on the bay of flees.
Its a lovely looking car but green is a marmite colour.

Lets look at the figures:
STi 4 - Standard clean example = £4500
Engine mods to get to 400 hp:
Engine rebuild: £2k
6 speed box: £1500 (if you are lucky)
or a PPG: £2500
Turbo - TD05 20g - £400 second hand
Injectors: £400
FMIC/STI8 TMIC - £300 + a load of labour to fit it
Walbro fuel pump: £90
Apexi power FC/Simtek £800 ish
Total: £9190 + a load of labour if you can't fit this stuff yourself.
You could buy a pre-modded car for a lot less, around 5-6k
or for 7k ish you could get a v7 sti with the same power.
My final advice on this would be to go and drive a few cars & see for yourself what the differences are. You may not like the Classic Sti/Bugeye.

That isn't quite true, yes you get the aluminium bonnet & wishbones, but the car itself, i.e the shell, is something like 200% more ridgid than a classic. You pay for this with extra weight, but the car is a stronger base to start with.
