Have an opinion, just be civil about it....and don't throw your toys out of the pram if other people disagree (in a civil fashion) of course.

That's the SN policy!

S*hut the f*ck up and just agree with me! That's my policy!

I agree totally, I just wish that all members of this community adhered to the official SN policy.

I though the general rule was you can have an opinion if you have a dick..... but if you have a vagina expect to be mocked and not have any opinion taken seriously.

Joking aside though, I expect people to have an opinion, but understand that other people will not and do not have to agree with that opinion. Being narrow minded annoys me, and when people cannot see past their own ignorance and stupidity, I just end up shaking my head and feeling sorry for them.

The thing is we will always be guilty from time to time on standing firm on 'some' issues. There will always be personal reasons why people will not change their opinion on certain subjects, and usually, life experience can explain why people feel sp strongly.

My opinion is very often not right, but it's still my opinion.

If you have an opinion, you're entitled to it, but like everyone else, others are allowed to disagree with that opinion.

Thats how it is.

As for personal attacks on members everytime they post, well thats a whole different ball game.

I totally agree on that. It's unfortunate, but when you start to have a few comments that are obviously having a dig, it gets a bit OTT. It's pointless and it's like being back at school.

Of course everyone should be entitled to an opinion, that goes without saying.

It's the manner in which some people argue against others' views that grates - self proclaimed experts or Google-warriors. But i'd rather see an opinion than a post devoid of any real content or value.

maybe the ones complaining about not having an opinion on here really don't deserve having one as they spout that much ****e without being able to give reason for their opinion.

TelBoy are you really like it when people get their spellings correct don't you? lol.

Do you think you could give me a spelling test? See if I can pass the TelBoy class for spelling and punctuation?

T&Cs are very clear on this, as am I (much to the displeasure of some). Insulting posts and bullying are NOT allowed on SN. If you are at the receiving end a) Do not retaliate for obvious reasons b) RTM and we'll deal.

You can express an opinion, even a contentious one, without coming across like an ***, or making things personal!

Ns04

PS. Ironically, the culprits will then accuse the mods of censoring free speech

I just think that the seven essential words; to too there their they're your you're, make SO much difference in the way somebody comes across. Worth every minute spent learning the differences, in my opinion, even if it passed you by at school.

I totally agree with you on that.
However, my spelling is not great, I did more than get by at school, heaven knows how to be honest!
I like coming on here, but I hate feeling somewhat inferior for getting a few words wrong in the heat of the moment. I have no excuse for it, other than I don't see the wrong spelling upon posting.

It leaves me with a sense or stupidity hanging in the back of my mind, and it's horrible to think that someone's poor spelling might render them a dunce to some members of SN.

Surely people who are intelligent enough to be able to spell correctly are also intelligent enough to see that the clothes do not maketh the man?

Simple rule: Insult fellow users and your in muddy water. So don't be suprised if an offending post gets deleted or your taken to task on it. (this may explain some of the recent post deletions).

A common situation: One user insults someone, then that user retaliates by throwing a counter insult (what do you expect? ). BOTH users complain to us when the tit-for-tat mud slinging goes too far. Others users also join in when they think one insult is "too far" and back their "mate" up.

So BOTH user's posts will get deleted. BOTH users maybe taken to task if they carry on.

The same also applies to any user who jumps on the bandwagon thinking because xxx can can insult him, so can I. Or, he insulted my mate, so I'm going to insult him back. And they seem shocked when their posts get deleted too? I thought that would it be pretty obvious.

Play nicely boys and girls, and then no posts will get reported, so the mods will do nothing ( ), and I can carry on doing whatever it is I should be doing outside of SN (on hold to Sage tech support at the mo ).

I'm the only **** that draws attention to it on here, usually. Certainly not borne out of a feeling of superiority believe me, just a passionate desire not to let the language deteriorate out of sight. I never intrude on the more serious threads.

It's alright TelBoy, I won't hold it against you, there is nothing wrong with wanting to speak 'proper' English.

I just hope that I can get my children to speak properly as well as spell properly, and not in this backwards Yam Yam speak that they are coming out with!!

I completely agree on the spelling, punctuation & grammer issue, (although this isn't what this thread is about), learning how to use the English language in the correct manner is an essential life skill in my opinion, whether you need to reply to a post on Scoobynet or fill out a job application form. If you can't spell or punctuate using text speak, then it's going to make your posts harder to read & possibly give the wrong impression.

If you think I'm being elitist for saying this, then I'm saddend, as it would seem these days that having a basic grasp of the English language is seen as uncool & being able to spell words with fewer letters, using numbers or incorrectly is perfectly acceptable. I wasn't educated in a private school, it was a pretty rough Comphrensive, yet I still manage to know the difference between: of, off, there, their, they are, your & you're etc...

Horses for courses, Adam. There's things you care about that i couldn't care less about, and vice versa. But tell me, what's the harm in taking just the teeniest bit of pride in your native language? I'm only talking about a standard of English that most 10 year olds would be expected to achieve. Is that too harsh??

Adam,

One might argue that Tel is doing the same thing you are by helping people become more aware of the use of the correct word for the circumstance.

Of course a cynic might think he does it because he is a mischievious little sod.

For the OP, it's very important to have an opinion but it's not necessary to always post it.

Agreed, Seems to be quite alot of dyslexic people on the go nowadays, Im not having a rant at them but i get the impression most of these cases are not genuine but just thickos (people who have learned nothing at school because they couldent be bothered) are using it as an excuse

Hi Adam, I've taken 2 secs to correct your post.

As I said before, this thread isn't about spelling, but you asked a question & here is my answer: No it does not make your employee less of a person because he cannot spell or punctuate. What it does highlight is the sad state of some education establishments in this country. They don't identify children with learning difficulties, address these problems before the child reaches a point where they have no desire to learn & resign themselves to the fact that they will never learn to be literate.

Now this is a massive generalisation & I don't know this individuals' situation, plus, I'm sure this post will cause enough strife in itself.

Can we get back on topic now & save the literacy for another thread, please?

I think that all of us on SN are self opinionated by definition and are entitled to say what we think, best in a well mannered manner of course.

I was also brought up to believe that it is extremely bad manners to draw attention to someone else's failings such such as their use of the language, unless they are being hoisted by their own petard of course.

Di Jon you did come onto the ESC forum and air your view's but you have to expect people to disagree with yours which they did.
If you can't take the backlash then don't post the thread it is still running and it has not been deleted or locked how much freedom of speech do you want,or is it that we didn't agree with you

For some people, it just isn't going to happen, and to be honest, fair enough, it's not your gig. It would be a shame if that prevented you posting though. It's obvious which people just don't "do" spelling. My gripe is with those who should know better, where a your instead of a you're, for example, spoils an otherwise well-written text.
