...I have around 12gb of content to load onto mine when it arrives. There are also at least half a dozen apps that will be essential for me immediately. I have had smart phones since the original Sony Ericsson P800 and have always used them for multimedia activities and I expect to do the same with the iPhone with better integration with my Macbook Pro (not that I am an Apple fanboy in anyway )

...and no zippo lighter application

You'll always get people wanting the in thing .. but it became the in things because people who know how to use it, rated it !

Its an excellent device and to be honest its moved me away from being a Nokia only user.

Just renewing mine and the wifes Orange contracts

Free phones (wife getting the N86[she's hated her Samsung Soul from day 1] I'm having the N97mini although I may change my mind)
800 mins
Unlimited texts
Unlimited data
£24.47 (inc vat) on an 18month contract

If I had wanted an iphone 3gs for free then it was going to be: 1200mins (or was it 800?) unlimited texts and unlimited data on 18 month contract for £34.97 per month.

But as 'Hell will have to freeze' before I ever own an iphone/ipod or any other Apple product I've gone for the bargain basement £24.47 plan!

Out of interest what are the apps that are considered essential. I'm not up with the Iphone and the only apps i've seen have been pretty useless gimmics.

I will use it for content - so iTunes for music and video
I do all my email on my phone - so mail.
Calendar management
Expense management as I have multiple clients and can do it on the move
TomTom
Facebook
Stock tracking/trading for US markets as I do short term trading there.

That would be a basic config - I do most of these things on my current phone except for the music/video content as it is pretty limited on that front. The Sony was better.

Then there are lots of appealing 'fun' apps out there like the one that does live tracking of F1 cars on track during races. Looking forward to exploring them all.

Cheers for asking after the dogs. Bold and Curve are fine thanks. I did look at adding to the pack, a bitch named Pearl, but she was too small for my liking.

lol@ being a RIM fanboy Just someone who appreciates their work. Not quite fanatical to be a fanboy just yet. (the 9700 might change all that)

I am sure you can all look gleefully on - Orange have actually repaid my Premier Customer loyalty by totally ****ing up my account and so my iPhone which arrived yesterday is as much use as a door stop as they cannot register the SIM.

The earliest they are saying they can do it is December 5th and the customer services representative said, 'I am really sorry that you won't be able to play with your iPhone now you have got it'.

The reason for the lack of registration is a complete and utter mystery to me and not one Orange could satisfactorily explain.

Oh, and the other level of fantastic customer service is that the number printed in the Orange booklet for business customer registration actually goes through to the El Cheapo Indian call centre for PAYG!!!! Very pleasing indeed.

So, totally free phone is now worth exactly what I paid for it.

What a typically 'up your own ****' comment from an I-phone user. 'Oh look, he hasn't got an I-Phone, what a pauper!'
Apple products are all about fashion, nothing else. Sorry if I couldn't give to f8cks as to what the latest 'fruity' gadget is.

Thats what you get when everyone who owns the best phone out there is called a sheep because they own one.

Am ui a sheep cos i have a scooby, lots of other people have one?

Am i a sheep cos i have a few pairs of diesel jeans, alot of other people have them?

Calling people a sheep just smacks of " i want one but cant get one"!

I got given an iPod Touch as a leaving present from my previous job. I didn't have an iPod before that, thought they were expensive toys but was extremely impressed.

The interface is good, the quality of playing back movies amazing and for someone who travels around they are great to have. Because of this I swapped my wife's phone for an iPhone and then when it was upgrade time she got a new 3GS and I got her 3G (and sold the Touch).

If you are on the move and never sit in front of a laptop/desktop computer, a dvd player or sky, then I would understand the obsession. 99 times out of a 100, the I-phone would be a step backyards, as this technology already exists works better in it's natural form.
It is only the 3gs that can send picture messages and record video? I thought this technology had been around for years before the first I-Phone. Am I missing something?
I friend showed me other day that he had the entire collection of Shakespeare's work on his I-Phone. 'Wow' I said. 'Why?' He looked at me with a blank expression and then replied 'erm, why not?' I will leave it there.

Sorry, December 5th? Could you please phone them back and ask them to send you a hugh bag of whatever it is they are abusing, then send it on to me. That is a complete joke.

I do wonder if a jailbreak/unlock would be of any use until they pull their collective fingers out. You can create a custom IPSW (or someone might have one already ) which will activate the phone, which from the sound of it, is the portion that isn't working. However, I'm not sure if that would actually work (easy enough to revert back from the jailbreaked version to the factory settings anyway), and if it did work, I'm not sure if the billing would be messed up in any way. As said, you could give it a shot if you want.

Surely your sheep and **** commentary could apply to nearly all the new phones that come to the market.

The iPhone is a particularly nice way to bring together a broad range of smart phone capabilties into a single device with an excellent interface.

Personally I am glad I waited until 3GS came out however I am not sure how getting an iPhone makes me more of a sheep than getting a ******* BB or a Nokia N9827489234923i or an HTC Greek God.

It works for me and will replace an existing Smart Phone and iPod with one single device and interface seamlessly with my laptop.

I am sure that enjoying that level of functionality makes me an **** or a sheep.

The timing is that the idiot who did the upgrade did something to my account that cannot be cleared until the end of my billing cycle (5th of the month). No one at Orange can understand why he did what he did, or how, but it leaves me with a brick.

I am not sure if it will work with my existing SIM from my HTC TyTN. I could try that - but didn't want to screw up the registration process.

I am wondering if I iPhone them tomorrow and say I am closing my account to go to 02 whether they would miraculously find a way to resolve all these problems. They haven't managed to in two hours of phone calls.

David,
I should have been clearer, I didn't mean use an alternate SIM, use the Orange one supplied with the iPhone (or whatever they told you to use with it). I can understand you not wanting to mess up the registration process, and it's possible unlocking the phone may well do this.

You could try firing off an email to executive.office@orange.co.uk detailing your issue and see if you get any joy from that. I used a similar address when I had issues with Bell Canada. Rather than go through the usual customer service hoops, I just contacted the EO directly, as it's mean to be the place where complaints from the CS levels are escalated to.

Threatening to leave could well work as well, no doubt they'd babble on about early cancellation fee's, so it wouldn't be a clean walk away.

Got it up an running at least on my wireless network at home.

Having used many Smartphones since the P800 what can I say. It is the most intuitive, comprehensive devices I have ever used.

Even if it only meets the standard from a technology perspective - the interface and application is phenomenal.

Brilliant!!

What are you afraid of?

Interesting product - but Nokias don't have a great history of sitting well in a Mac environment. Will this phone be any different. Maybe I will get version II when my iPhone contract runs out
