Some of the comments on this thread are grossly unfair.
Surely we should be commending our PM for hand writing letters to the families of soldiers killed in action. It would be easy for him to simply sign a proforma letter.
I'll remind you that there is absolutely no correlation between hand writing neatness and intelligence. If there was then Einstein would have been a retard.
Sometimes it would be nice to read some considered views on politics rather than hate filled rants

As much as i dislike the useless ****, This is all a load of bull$**** TBH, If he had sent a printed letter he would have got it in the neck by most for not taking the time to sit down and write one out, He takes the time to sit down and write one out he gets it for his spelling, A bit rich considering 75 % of the people in here cant spell to save their own life.
As for the woman who gave the note to the press you would think she would have more on her mind than somebody's spelling considering she has just lost a son

I agree whole heartedly he is a **** but i think the press/media have made a total mountain out of a mole hill on this one, ok his spellings ****3 and his writings like a dog's dinner but he took the time to sit and write it out and send it on in the best of faith

Apparently previous PMs (can't remember which ones) used to hand-write letters such as these AND send a typed copy with it so there were no misunderstandings. They were also checked BEFORE they got sent to the Sun ..... If he can't even spell or bother to re-write a letter rather than just cross out a mistake with the felt-tip he was using then the guy's deserves all the criticism he gets.

Its time this guy stod down or had an election. In my opinion, he's become worse and the general public have no faith in him. He's now even more unpopular than when John Major was ousted from being a PM.

If our son was killed out there I would be proud to receive a personal note from the pm irrespective of spelling errors.

I tell you one thing, if I had lost my son, not even a sorry letter from jesus christ himself would make me feel any better.
Instead of sending thousands of troopers over to fight, why dont we reverse it. So, if two nations want to go to war, then the leaders of that country go outside for a fist fight.
So, lets get Brown, Obama into the ring with Bin Ladan. Would be sorted much quicker, although I cant see Brown putting up much of a fight, a) he wouldnt be able to see who was infront of him, b) he would be stuttering "I, I, I," all the time.

I do agree with Martin over this. As much as I hate what Flash and his predecessor have done to this country, it is the thought behind the letter which is of real importance. He took the trouble to write a personal letter in spite of the lack of free time he will have in that job. The fact that he spelled the name incorrectly plus the other points raised in connection with the letter are of no vital importance whatsoever.
The fact that he was moved to write in the first place deserves a bit of respect and to make such a fuss over it in the press just shows that they will attack anyone when they get the chance in order to sell more papers etc.!
The mother of the chap who was killed should have known better despite her understandable feelings of grief.

This woman has an agenda 'way beyond' understanding the death of her son (whom by the way signed up to put his life on the line if necessary).

I disagree Les. Were he not moved to write, given that he is ultimately responsible for the lad being there then I think he would be even more of a disgrace.

He is blind in one eye - his sight is limited in his second which is why he uses a large felt tip pen.
The woman is bringing significance to her son's death that is totally understandable, but she is doing it in a way that is ultimately not resourceful for her and I suspect in years to come she is, in grief, taking actions that she will probably regret.
I can't write for sh*t and whilst you all may not agree with my views or my politics it does not make me a retard. Even I cannot read my own writing a day later!

Really dont think his response was a clever one though, but he played well to the cameras this morning.
Personally, given the choice of a printed letter, signed, or a scrawled handwritten thing in felt tip pen... I would opt for the printed letter. A far better recognition of him memory and ultimate sacrifice.
I realise he has written quite a few of these now, but we are not talking hundreds a day (thank goodness). A llittle more effort would not have hurt at all.
