Some of the comments on this thread are grossly unfair.
Surely we should be commending our PM for hand writing letters to the families of soldiers killed in action. It would be easy for him to simply sign a proforma letter.
I'll remind you that there is absolutely no correlation between hand writing neatness and intelligence. If there was then Einstein would have been a retard.
Sometimes it would be nice to read some considered views on politics rather than hate filled rants
There are plenty of legitimate reasons to have a go at the PM, this isn't one of them

As much as i dislike the useless ****, This is all a load of bull$**** TBH, If he had sent a printed letter he would have got it in the neck by most for not taking the time to sit down and write one out, He takes the time to sit down and write one out he gets it for his spelling, A bit rich considering 75 % of the people in here cant spell to save their own life.
As for the woman who gave the note to the press you would think she would have more on her mind than somebody's spelling considering she has just lost a son

I agree whole heartedly he is a **** but i think the press/media have made a total mountain out of a mole hill on this one, ok his spellings ****3 and his writings like a dog's dinner but he took the time to sit and write it out and send it on in the best of faith

Apparently previous PMs (can't remember which ones) used to hand-write letters such as these AND send a typed copy with it so there were no misunderstandings. They were also checked BEFORE they got sent to the Sun ..... If he can't even spell or bother to re-write a letter rather than just cross out a mistake with the felt-tip he was using then the guy's deserves all the criticism he gets.

Have you guys read the Sun today ?? The old bird that Gordon **** rang, recorded the conversation. The Sun has now printed what was said. Jesus he's a **** of the first degree !
Its time this guy stod down or had an election. In my opinion, he's become worse and the general public have no faith in him. He's now even more unpopular than when John Major was ousted from being a PM.

But saying that, I guess with the number of men we've lost over the past few weeks - I guess he's had a lot of them to write......

If our son was killed out there I would be proud to receive a personal note from the pm irrespective of spelling errors.
And to record a personal and confidential telephone call for The Sun is unforgivable.
30 pieces of silver for betraying her son's memory.

Just what you would expect from a man making a damage limitation call.

^^^^ :-) Exactly, he should of been apologized, but no, the idiot then tried to make out he wasnt wrong and it was all due to his writing.
I tell you one thing, if I had lost my son, not even a sorry letter from jesus christ himself would make me feel any better.
Instead of sending thousands of troopers over to fight, why dont we reverse it. So, if two nations want to go to war, then the leaders of that country go outside for a fist fight.
So, lets get Brown, Obama into the ring with Bin Ladan. Would be sorted much quicker, although I cant see Brown putting up much of a fight, a) he wouldnt be able to see who was infront of him, b) he would be stuttering "I, I, I," all the time.
We could always throw Mandelson into the ring, as from what I reckon, he loves a nice tight ring - piece.

I do agree with Martin over this. As much as I hate what Flash and his predecessor have done to this country, it is the thought behind the letter which is of real importance. He took the trouble to write a personal letter in spite of the lack of free time he will have in that job. The fact that he spelled the name incorrectly plus the other points raised in connection with the letter are of no vital importance whatsoever.
The fact that he was moved to write in the first place deserves a bit of respect and to make such a fuss over it in the press just shows that they will attack anyone when they get the chance in order to sell more papers etc.!
The mother of the chap who was killed should have known better despite her understandable feelings of grief.

Les, I don’t agree. I feel that letter had no thought in it, and was rushed out. I also can’t help but feel it was written to portray an image of support, to bolster his image in the press, which has back fired.
As for the spelling, well if he hasn’t the time to correctly spell the person's name, then the letter has no relevance at all. How can he be sorry for this person's mother, when he doesn’t know the solders name, or his mothers? Therefore the letter is pointless.
It’s like sending your g/f a large bunch of flowers, but spelling her name wrong. Once she's spotted that, the cost / flowers mean absolutely nothing to her. ( I have first hand knowledge of this )

the Sun = the politics, morals and ambition of the lowest common denominator in our society.
the fact that the Mother has to conduct her well founded grief through it tells me more about her and the Sun than GB i'm afraid.
GB is far from perfect and deserves criticism -- but this just smells

I agree it is poor to get the name wrong but not necessary to kick up such a fuss under the circumstances.
Are you really in a position to complain anyway after your admitted fatal error!!!

hahah no ! :-) It was early in the relationship and she has a French name, thats my excuse anyway. However, I didnt ring her up and argue that it wasnt my fault and its was my writing though ! :-)

This woman has an agenda 'way beyond' understanding the death of her son (whom by the way signed up to put his life on the line if necessary).
Who, having lost a child, would think of/note/complain/publish spelling mistakes and then, with malice, set up to record an apology.
I'm sure her son would have been proud

I also think that the mother in question is actually making sure that her son did not die for nothing (which is probably how she feels) by using the opportunity that his death has given her, to speak to the Prime Minister and also record his sickening whining to show to the nation (if we needed more proof) what a disgraceful man he is.
We need a vote, now!

I disagree Les. Were he not moved to write, given that he is ultimately responsible for the lad being there then I think he would be even more of a disgrace.

He is blind in one eye - his sight is limited in his second which is why he uses a large felt tip pen.
The woman is bringing significance to her son's death that is totally understandable, but she is doing it in a way that is ultimately not resourceful for her and I suspect in years to come she is, in grief, taking actions that she will probably regret.
I can't write for sh*t and whilst you all may not agree with my views or my politics it does not make me a retard. Even I cannot read my own writing a day later!

I have to agree that it seems that this is being used as a platform for further discussions on equipment etc.
Really dont think his response was a clever one though, but he played well to the cameras this morning.
Personally, given the choice of a printed letter, signed, or a scrawled handwritten thing in felt tip pen... I would opt for the printed letter. A far better recognition of him memory and ultimate sacrifice.
I realise he has written quite a few of these now, but we are not talking hundreds a day (thank goodness). A llittle more effort would not have hurt at all.

JJ: The letter that you wrote to me Mr Brown...
GB: Yes
JJ: I don't want to sound disrespectful here, but was an insult to my child. There was 25 spelling mistakes, 25!
GB: There wasn't.
JJ: Mr Brown I've got the letter in front of me...
GB: I've got the letter in front of me and if you feel that my writing was not right then I'm sorry about that.

I can't believe there are so many people ready, willing and able to line up behind Rupert Murdoch and help drive his agenda
Let us not forget that whatever you think of the PM he knows full well the pain of losing a child, and I'm sure is absolutely mortified at this being dragged across the front pages.

The idea some f**king Aussie is calling the shots
People in this country just love to get on the bandwagon once they sense a politician is unpopular
