i don't understand what all the fuss is about
if train drivers get really well paid -- become a train driver
if you can't become a train driver -- maybe you don't deserve the wage they get
if you don’t want to become a train driver fine – why concern yourself with what they do or don’t get paid

Isn't it a wider discussion about whether the strikes are justified? That certainly concerns me!!

These days, with job mobility and low unemployment, if you don't like it go and do something else instead of striking.
This applies to postmen, firemen, IT consultants etc. etc. When I feel underpaid or if the job conditions aren't good enough, I go and get another job. I don't down tools and **** things up for everyone else.
Nurses etc. may well be underpaid and loads of people will have loads of sympathy for them, however ask those same people how much extra tax and NI they're willing to pay to put nurses on £40k a year

my opinion for what its worth
yes they are justified striking IF ALL other options exhausted (which I assume they had been) problems seem to arise when its ad-hoc lets have a meeting on the Monday stirke on the Wed etc etc or why strike just refuse to work the sundays?
Also seems to be an issue with there leader who appears a little power mad remanisant (sorry for spelling) of Arthur Scargell in the 70's / 80's calling his troops out if the coffee was cold.
there must be a middle ground btw organised strikes, speaking to each other management v. Staff and keeping us poor sods mobile on the trains to work and there PAY

that just smacks of crap management and inadequate resource allocation to me

Surely from an employers point of view, it must be cheaper to stop overtime across the board and employ more drivers.

A friend was a driver with BR and then EWS until he had to retire.
He was trained on over 15 different classes of loco, all with different characteristics that he had to LEARN, plus he had to know HUNDREDS of miles of route, by heart, so he could drive it in pitch dark or fog, knowing EXACTLY where he was, what signal was coming up, what the gradient was, etc etc.
All this with up to 2000 tonnes trailing at 70mph.
They deserve what they get, and more.

Basically as described earlier, I work a range of locations all around North London London and have covered the C2C line in Essex, so if you if you travel on the North London line or C2C then your life has been in my hands at some point, I am based in signalboxs or control centres, I have an overview of every train in the area, a timetable of where they need to be and when and I make it happen.

I haven't got in depth knowledge of their recruitment quotas, I have however had a few conversations with driver managers in the past that have explained the cost involved in training new guys up.

Not that many, I'd guess statisically it's very low. It's a good headline though.

Police & Firemans jobs are fairly easy in comparison to Nurses (Flame Suit On)
Only real reward is maybe believing you are making a difference, which is deminishing each year.

Responsibility. An A380 pilot steers the aircraft down the runway, as soon as the main gear gets airborne, he presses auto pilot, and sits back and relaxes until the gear makes contact at his destination. He isn't paid 100k a year to fly the plane, he's paid to know how to fly it, should he need to.
