You really havent got a clue mate. Why do you think that they pay that amount? Dont you think if it was that easy the train companies would train up new people and pay a lower rate?

If its that easy why dont you try and get into it? That way you wont be moaning about what they get paid.

Maybe i'll start a thread about how much footballers get paid because they get paid alot more than me and do alot less

Maybe it is relevant. You think they get paid alot for what they do, maybe if you disclosed what you did and for what pay, people could assume the same. They could be wrong in their assumption, but I'd guess they'd maybe know as little to be able to comment, as you know about driving trains. I's all assumption. And just to be clear, I'm assuming you don't have detailed knowledge about driving trains.

Personally I don't know if they have the right to twist here, as I honestly don't know what is involved in their job and if that level of pay is right or excessive. I would however guess, they wouldn't be on such good wages (imo) as it is, if it was a really simple and not very demanding job.

On the other hand, although my job comes with far less responsibility, it can be very demanding, certainly in terms of patience and character. I'm paid crap, expected to work extra hours with no over time rate (they cook the books for that), work every weekend (not Sundays now, as I opted out while I still had the chance). I could go on about how 'bad' I and others like me have it, but there is little point. It's a job at the end of the day, and until I get something better, it'll have to do. I think what I'm getting at, is many people have it tough, and feel/are under valued. I would love it if I could be earning even half what the drivers are, just to put up with the **** I have to each day, but ultimately it's my choice to do that job.

The only thing I find funny, is it seems some jobs allow for people complaining/striking etc. more than others.

Well no, but I'd be moaning about how much I got paid......

I just think for the job they do, the wage seemed good and they should not be moaning about only getting 3% while the rest of the country get nothing.

Of course they do. However, the cause of the argument comes from the fact that not everyone can go on strike or cause a fuss in order to get a pay rise.

Say I'm offered a 3% payrise, I then say I want 5% or I'm going on strike. The response would be "Heres your P45 and watch the door as it slams behind you"

Also £40K is a wage that will see most people comfortable. Say you want 600% rather than 300% or you won't do it - would they agree? Its the same premise just different amounts involved.

Personally, I'd rather drive the train than build the metal but I love trains - we were sitting down for breakfast one Sunday morning in Tesco and a chap was eating with his family and he had rail track oranges on, he looked knackered.

100% agree with you about going on strike. I work for an agency and I havent had a pay rise in 5 years But then again i probably get paid too much anyway

A long time ago my brother was training as a driver. Some yobs dropped something off a bridge. The object came through the screen and hit him a glancing blow across the face, before making a hole in the wall behind.

He left the job after that - too many bridges and you can't swerve.

I do have a clue...they drive trains. I know someone who drives a train and I'm pretty sure she didn't get educated to a university level to do it! In fact they don't need any qualifications. They get a good wage for a job that's not that hard to train for.

Trainee drivers only earn as little as 17.5k

To be fair I'm guilty of reading headlines, for the most part they earn jack sh1te, only experienced drivers earn 35k. But it's a low skill job.

Akshully, I think the training is quite hard. You have to learn routes, signs etc and be able to do it on innnnnnnnsssstiiinnncccttttt (You'll only get that if you watch Time Gents )
I would imagine that driving your local DMU back and for into the city is probably not going to be as high a wage as say the channel tunnel - much the same as most industries.

I said earlier that I thought Freightliner pays 40-45K start but that was experienced drivers.

so if your not educated at university level ur not worth that kind of wage? I left scool at 17 and went to work in a fish factory. But through hard work and luck i now earn alot more than the train drivers and i maintain the thing that the train runs on

Clearly your lack of education is making it hard for you to understand what I'm going on about, but I'm not going to dumb down for you.

We really need to keep the track on thread. Regardless of education, professions, etc. Moaning about a 3% pay rise while others are getting nothing or worse, laid off does not sit well with me. In fact I volunteered a 10% cut in my salary.
