There's still several lines used by royal mail as far as I know ...... epically dodgy ground to go poking around in though ..... they're REALLY protective of those lines from what i've heard :S

I'd be up for a bit of this

When I was a power apprentice (many many many moons ago) I was involved with planning the emergency lighting in the 'deep level' cable chambers which run all through London and part of it is an escape route for Downing Street and Parliament (special people, without brain cells ).

Was pretty cool as some of the tunnels have miniature electric trains and there are loads of hidden bomb and chemical war proof rooms down there!
We could hear the underground trains running above us.

I went down to the old post office line about 7 years back when the company i was working for installed a spiral staircase down to it. There is a platform on the line in liverpool street which used to be accessed by two lifts, one at each end of the platform, apparently H&S says you must have stairs so we ripped out one lift and installed a spiral staircase in the lift shaft.
You still wouldnt get out in an emergency though, its so far down that if you tried to run up the stairs round and round in circles to get out you would be too dizzy to carry on half way up and collapse anyway.
The post office line is a smaller gauge and apparently had driverless trains, i was told that it isnt used any more and certainly didnt see any trains go through when i was working there.

Can't have a lot of sympathy, except for the train driver....

Clearly up to no good - family & friends comments are classic - they just used to like going out around midnight on their quad bikes?
