WR1 Boost?
#31
I just had a look around, all solenoid hoses are ok,I have now blanked the boost gauage hose off,re circ valve hoses etc all seem to be fine.
could the boost gauge hose have been causing this? I've got to go out again later,so I'll see if blanking the boost hose off has solved it.
thanks,

just taken the t-piece out of the re circ valve hose,so there is now no boost hose at all,all back to standard, and still have this noise.
what's the next step?

Hi,
been working away so only just got chance to take the IC off...
ok everything looked fine apart from the turbo inlet hose? I think that's what it is,the hose the goes directly onto the turbo from the airbox.
the hose was somewhat loose, and skew whiff,I tightened it up but I think the hose is knackered, there's some marks on it where the clamps has grabbed it and I think it's tore underneath.
I just drove the car and still have the noise,I get a lot of swooshing air noise in 1st to 3rd gear, and I get a bit of a screech in 4th and higher gears, the noise also has a 'spinning' sound to it,like the sound a whip makes over and over again really fast.
I'm going to order an intake pipe now,I just hope this is the problem, does what I've mentioned tie in?
I also had this same noise when I fitted a de-cat and didn't have it mapped,I took it off and the car has been fine since then, only recently started getting this noise again.
thanks for your help,
Ben

The WR1 is mapped by Prodrive to hold 1.346 bar in the mid range and 0.965 at the red line, appropriate wastegate duty valuse have been set to achieve that, boost gauges are notoriopus for error, Defi boost gauges over read by 0.1-0.15 bar for example, when on positive boost.
As a comment, a car mapped on the dyno and not then subsequently checked and adjusted on the road afterwards can demonstrate severe over boost due to the load impedance differece that exists.
If then intake hose is damaged at the soft flexi section that will make the car noisy, and also run it lean since the turbo will be taking in air that has not been measured by the maf, you should be circumspect, the noises you describe are symtomatic of the turbo running into surge due to early boost levels being achieved taking it outside its compressor map. they caould, of course, simply be due to then turbo sucking air in thorough the air intake hose it its damaged. Either way drive conservatively until you have resolved the problem.
cheers

Hey Bob,
well the car has been fine as I say, could the cold weather be making it overboost? I can't see how it's gone from being fine,to having this problem,if the intake pipe is damaged,it's been damaged since I owned the car.
well I have ordered an intake pipe,if i take the old once off and see it is tore,we know the culprit, but if it's fine...what are we looking at here?
thanks,Ben

Hi,
I have just attempted to take off the old intake hose without removing the manifold, everything disconnected but I physically couldn't get it out from under the manifold. So anyway I've put it all back together tightened the turbo end up a little tighter, and the noise is now even worse now,so I'm thinking the intake hose is definitely to blame.
I've been quoted 235 pounds to fit my new silicone one, this reasonable? I've seen a video of one being replaced without removing the manifold?
thanks,

ok you sure? is it any different than the classic? I don't want to get into the job, chop my old hose up and find I can't get the silicone one in.
thanks for your help, just need to make sure before I get into it that's all.

easier than taking the inlet manifold off.

Is there anyway to pressure up the system to find a leak? if there is one...if there is no leak, what on earth can be making the turbo spin up too early?
thanks, re-setting the ECU as I type...

Here's a video I just made, the air noise starts just after 4 seconds in,and last for only 1 second. The fluttering noise cannot be heard....
this noise only happens in 3rd gear and up...and is a little worse when going uphill.

I just watched the video, and I now can't even hear it...maybe youtube dumbed the quality down...
I'm begging to think it's the cold weather... but it's a standard WR1 ECU?

a friend of mine has said it's probably because the car is boosting easier and the waste gate is letting pressure off, which is the noise I'm hearing...sounds a reasonable theory to me? is this possible?

I'v noticed with this very cold weather we'r having the car is 'missing' slightly in the lower gears around 2500-3000 rpm.... any ideas what this is? running lean? rich? boost leak?
then in the higher gears it's giving me this 'whistle' noise around the same RPM range...
thanks,

If i am in the area - happy to meet up and put your mind at rest.
