sick absence work calls

If I am sick, i.e. properly sick enough to be off which is very rare I dont really want calling, however at our place there is a lot of sickies being taken which is surprising as I thought it being a private company it wouldnt hapen so much but it does, so if rather than being ill I was like some of them, not arsed, hungover or ill because I dont look after myself then the odd phone call isnt so bad but I guess it does interupt them watching Jeremy Kyle.
I got called when on leave a few weeks ago, was on holiday, spent ages on the phone, on one hand I sorted it out (database problem) and they are generally very good (it isnt all one way) but it kind of spoilt a days leave as it reminded me about work, I suppose these days its good to be in demand and I should avail myself but I am off at Christmas for 2 weeks and I dotn want to hear from work, I am having a break from work, not a couple of weeks of "work lite", if I just keep doing it it kind of masks the fact they need another person to cover.
To the OP though, it doesnt sound intrusive and you didnt say what is up with you, like has been said its two calls in three weeks and you are posting on here about it so it looks like you arent gravely ill.

If you dont like your job/boss or you think in general you are overworked/underpaid then i can see how work ringing when you are meant to be resting would be annoying.
However, if you enjoy your job, think you are paid well and are appreciated you wouldnt mind work ringing occassionally to ask a few simple questions.
All boils down to the individual and their attitiude to work.

On hols is different though Jacko, that's a planned break & I wouldn't expect to get bothered either although IMHO a phone call here & there (if important) is no bother. My old boss though said turn off your phone as his view was a holiday is a break from work ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)

Some interesting viewpoints represented. I think there are some differences in the work culture between here and the mainland, some live to work where others work to live - choose whichever you will, but I don't think anyone ever lay on their death bed wishing they had put in a few extra hours at the office!!!
For the critics you will be pleased to know that I spent 45 minutes this morning on work related calls, excluding a quick update report to my boss about the state of my health. The problems are now sorted and my status of IT hero has been restored! I was given the background to my request and told there was no expectation that I would respond, but was advised some pressure was applied from above, and this was merely someone doing what a senior manager had told them to do.
For the doubters, I have been in the past self employed, it was never going to make me rich, but I was very pleased with the reputation I had built from trading on honesty, transparency and impartiality, and it provided me with a decent income, and I actually enjoyed it. My business was supply, installation and support of IT systems to business and home users. I am a bit of a saddo as IT is my hobby as well as my chosen career path.
I have chosen my career path, and while no job is perfect (except maybe self employment) I enjoy what I do for a living. If the day comes when I don't enjoy it, I know where the door is and I know what my options are.
I see no point in going into the details of what has gone wrong with me, but the cocktail of prescribed drugs while needed to return me to a good state of health had some pretty dramatic side effects, the most bizarre of which was hallucinations - where I saw small red spiders on everything I looked at.
As I said it has been an interesting discussion, it is always interesting to see things from the point of view of others.
Thanks for the get well wishes both on the thread and PM. I think I am through the worst of it, I have to see my GP on Wednesday and see where we go from there.
