I think you are mistaking the mindset of normal people versus chavs who don't care or even have actual knowledge of how to raise dogs (or children apparently).

They may be bigger or more powerful dogs, but sensible people who actually do their research get certain breeds, as they a) like them and b) actually know their true nature (not hype) and will raise them correctly. The sort of dogs in question, are not known for being agressive by nature, it's down to the sort of people who sometimes get them, and raise them to be. Look it up, talk to people who know their stuff, instead of just believing what you read in the papers/see on the news when a tragedy strikes.

It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.

Wolves are indeed very smart, however not very good at being socialised. Even 3rd, 4th, 5th generation captive ones.

What would you suggest attracted me to my dogs then?
You tell me...... did they come with a free Blackberry?

Not taken as "having a go" and it's a good question.

The problem with Pitbulls (and their ancestors) is that in the UK at least, their breeding and ownership to a large extent appears to have been centred around firstly bull baiting, then other forms of baiting in a pit with various other animals (all of which were legal at the time) through to today's organised dog fighting.

In a sense, societly has itself to blame (no surprise really).

Effectively banning the breed hasn't stopped the fighting, of course, its just driven the ownership and breeding underground.

I stand to be corrected, but I'm not sure you can breed "agression" into any dog. You can most certainly condition a dog to respond in a certain way, however and you can of course breed a dog to have certain physical charateristics which make it more suited to a particular purpose.
The physical characteristics of Pitbulls has made them well suited to the abhorrent pastimes of so called civilised societies.

On that basis, no, I don't think they should be banned, as there is no reason why a responsibly bred and owned Pitbull should be any more dangerous than any other dog of comparable strength.

There is also the danger of the police wrongly identifying a "pit bull type" dog with the subsequent consequences.

I would, however, like to see the law changed for all breeds to make it illegal to breed dogs without a licence, and to ensure that anyone found involved in the promotion, organisation, participation and even attendance of dog fighting be hit with draconian penalties and sent to jail for a very, very long time.

I would also like to see dogs graded on strength (rather than size and breed) with robust and properly policed licencing. To get a licence you should have to demonstrate competence and the correct attitude (thus immediately ruling out all the gutter scum who use them as status symbols)

But, as has been said many, many times on here before, if we can't properly police drivers without licences, how the hell are we supposed to licence dogs?

Pitbulls are excellent dogs to own, SBT's too, American Bulldogs also.
If you look into thier history you will obviously see the baiting fighting element.
However they are loyal and caring breeds unless the dog is disturbed the owners will determine the way the dog acts. during its formative months.
I have three staffs they are the greatest. my children are 11 and 14 i do not allow them to be alone with the dogs still. i trust my dogs wholly but prevention is better than a copper shooting your dog and your child at best being injured.
My dogs could not be trusted with small children though, due to my scumbag freeloading parasitic neighbours small children tormenting my dogs through the fence.
i have brought my dogs up the best i can but due to my neighbours i am fearful whenever there are young kids nearby. i must add though it is impossible for my dogs to escape the garden without being noticed. They do act as a pack when out walking and stuff, they only attack footballs and large sticks though. The breed is unquestionably devoted and loyal in my view.
We should be newtering the class of people who are using these crossbred large powerful types of dog as macho objects. So many of these dogs are abandoned and discarded by these educationally subnormal subhuman classed folk.

Well I tried out this Breed Selector, and entered all the characteristic you guys have mentioned, amazingly it didn't come back recommending Pit Bulls, Staffs Rotties etc, instead it came back with Spaniels and Labradors, they are obviously just as confused as me

Like i said we had one many moons ago before they were a fashion accessory!!!!!!!!!!
Just because you have something against such dogs doesn't mean the rest of us have to.

Just to let you know marty we are collecting our English Mastiff puppy on December the 12th, very big dog so it must be vicious, NOT!

Funnily enough, I had a go, and put in what I thought were the anwers I'd give based on my (limited) knowledge, and a staffy was on the list of choices.

Did you actually scroll through all the results, and answer based on anything you have read here?

Yes of course, and assuming you don't select based upon power and potential ferociousness you won't get back a result that includes any of the breeds we are talking about here

You will notice i had second thoughts and edited my post to remove the insult, however i'm still inclined to thinking you are one.

Let me put it this way....

You tell me why i shouldn't buy a Rottweiler assuming it is a pedigree dog from a reputable breader with proven history.

lol superb selector, based on my requirements it suggested...

Akita 90%

Rottweiler 90%

The selector however is a little vague for those amongst us who actually have an interest in a dog. If you need the internet to tell you which dog to get, please dont get one.

Apologies if my jokey termilology offended you Martin.

So, let me get this straight.

You asked for reasons why.

You were given (by me) an explanation of my particular thought process as to the ownership prospect, not because I feel the need to explain myself or "post rationalise" anything, but out of courtesy to aid your understanding, which clearly is somewhat lacking. I stand by my point that you didn't get the answer you were expecting.

You chose to completely ignore that explaination, relying insted on your own pre-conceived ideas of why you think I have the dogs I have.

And on top of that, you are stereotyping me as a "status" owner simply because I joked that you had "fecked off".

I'm not saying certain breeds aren't owned by the wrong people for the wrong reasons, because that would be as misguided as your opinion of me and my reasoning.

But let's not go assuming everone with a Rottie or a Staffie has them as a status symbol, shall we?

In the hope that I can ellicit a sensible answer, I'll ask again. How many rottweilers/staffies do you have first hand experience of?

Well I didn't choose the option of hard as ****, I went for the middle ground, and went for a unspecified sized dog. I also chose based on needing moderate training and exercise, being friendly etc. Funny how both staffies and bull terriers turned up on my results. Also spaniels.

Amazing that eh, 2 people both do the selector and both get told to get Akita's.
Now while not dangerous in the right hands, they are considered tempremental at times, and a darn sight more powerful than a Mal/Husky.

Im gonna have to keep going through it now to find what it takes to get recommended a Mal lol

Animal Planet :: Guides :: Dog Breed Selector

Given that the breed selector you linked to doesn't mention at least half of the charteristics mentioned, your posts are becoming less credible with every mouse click.

Edit to add - leaving everything "not important" but saying I wanted an extremely fierce, bold and strong dog - you know, the "hard as" opton, yes, I get a Rottweiler, but I also get Border Collies, Spaniels, Retrievers, Setters, Bearded Collies, Daschunds and about 155 other breeds.

I think that says it all about the credibility of the selector

Mine came back suggesting a Rotty lol
Shame on Animal Planet for recommending I buy a killer. I wonder if I can sue!
And an Akita was also recommended.

In reality that selector is for people who want to pretend they want a dog, and want to see what they are told to get. Not people with a genuine interest in dogs.

Was also interested to see at the low levels of exercise for their highest rating.

I know how you feel. I have to sound a siren in the back garden 15 mins before I take mine out. Agreement with the local authorities. Too many people were running under buses and falling off ladders when they saw the dogs coming. So I have to give the locals time to take shelter.
The siren is just a recording of the dogs

YouTube - Aana howling again

lol you know it mate, I would not be without mine now. They know how to get what they want, but there is a very clear line that they DONT cross.
