We know you are good at spelling and grammar, so why not start a thread about it instead of popping up every time someone makes a mistake?

I'm happy to have my posts deleted. Couldn't give a toss

The stuff i don't comment on, on serious threads, is criminal though. Time and place etc.

Ah, one of the southend meets. I do remember going to a few, and of course the obligatory nasty shirt would have been worn. I honestly cannot say that I remember you being there or chatting to you, but then I am getting on and the grey matter does fail me from time to time.

It's probably this shirt:

The picture was taken in the car park at, I believe, the Mayflower Retail Park off the A127. Pretty sure a Mike Rainbird was responsible for the shot, and it was, I believe, the first Southend meet that I attended.

The other one that offends SW's eyes would be this one

To be honest, the only worry would be that I had chatted to you, possibly had some rapport, and now recall who you were and feel somewhat foolish that I've been more than a little rude to you on here, not that I think you would care or worry about that, water off a ducks back and such like.

I can think of at least two.

1. Doing a bit of agency lorry driving between IT jobs and had just connected up the tractor unit to a trailer with 42 tonnes of goods in it (Fyffes bananas to be precise). Merrily drove off until I heard a mahoosive crash. I'd not connected up properly and dropped the trailer. It was at a docks and there seemed to be hundreds of people watching. Bent the legs of the trailer and broke the cab brake line connector. As if I hadn't fecked up enough, I also left the trailer number plate on a trailer at the docks. For some reason the company didn't want me back the next day. Years later I still cringe when I see a Fyffes lorry.

2. In a fit of temper at home, shoved my company laptop across a table into a wall and managed to break the screen. I should have taken it into work and got it replaced. But, I knew the first thing the IT Support guys did in these situations was check the hard drive for anything, er, interesting. I had several gigs of interesting stuff on it. Had to pay almost as much as the laptop was worth to get a new screen fitted by an repair company.

I can remember the very first time i felt this! I was in P6 at school and myself and the other James were playing sword fights with 2 wooden Metre length rulers. I smacked him across the back with mine and it snapped in two. I can just remember the sinking feeling thinking "Oh oh, Mrs Wiley is gonna kill me!" So we hid the ruler behind a cupboard but later confessed to our wrong doings!

Daz, I like the way you say it how it is in your posts, we're a dying breed. However, you're way off the mark here. Losing it isn't good form. Losing it for no real reason is bad form. I haven't met Tel before you think I have, but his obvious passion for the English language is clear. (It is also equal to mine, only I realised I could rely on Tel to do my work and campaign on my behalf without any input from me. ).

Maybe impending Fatherhood has tightened your ***** but come on FFS a little lighthearted correction isn't that restricting is it?

Lets keep this thread on topic shall we gents.

You know where the ignore feature is: I suggest you use it if you find someone objectionable.

We don't really want:

a) Perfectly good threads turned into a pedant fest, nor
b) ***** waving

'A' is a form of trolling, especially when the perpetrator can see that it's winding people up and continues regardless to the detriment of a thread. 'B' quickly leads to things getting threatening.

Both forms of conduct will get you on the wrong side of the web team very quickly!

Actually it's Stu that does the spanking - I'm just the poor soul charged with warning people! He's a demon with a wrapped up wet towel!

But anyway: back on topic!

In my mis-spent (ahem) youth, I once got in blazing row with someone I'd presumed to be a shop assistant. Getting no where I demand to see the "Clueless plonker who runs the place"

It transpired I was already speaking to him.....and that didn't do my argument many favors!

These days, I take a more measured approach - it gets better results and makes you look less of a tosser!

I appreciate what you're saying I do. But, (one for you tel) in my defence I haven't lost it as such, losing it is going to find him but I'm not that arsed. What does annoy me is that Tel's entire contribution to this site is nothing but spelling corrections and wind ups. You have to ask yourself if he has nothing better to offer than that then why is he here.

I'm tired of reading the same old bollocks from someone who has posted this negative sh*t on average once an hour every day for the last 9 years. I mean come on man, get out more there's more to life than winding us up, surely the sad bastid can find something better and, dare I say it, more productive to do with his time.

NSO how much of Tel's pedant rubbish do we have to put up with before its actioned though. You keep telling us conduct such as that will be actioned yet day in day out he's picking faults with minor spelling and in general being no use to the scoobynet community whatsoever.
I mean look at his post count over the last nine years and then look at what out of that lot is actually useful.

The man's an idiot it's only right he's treated as such.

Back OT for a change

Many years ago I was running a training course on a client's system. I had asked, before I did anything, wether the server being used was the live server or a backup, they said live, I pointed out this was not a good idea, and that a test server would be better, should I mess up, however, they said it would be ok.

I went on with the training course. One of the things our software can do is to heal itself, it runs something on the client computer, which connects to a share and then copies down changes to various items, including itself.

Now, I made a change whilst demoing, and I cannot remember what it was (we are talking at least seven years ago) but I believe it was updating one of the components, which had a bug in it which caused it to display an error on screen. The component with a bug was the self healing thing.

I saw the error on the client computer I was demoing with and had forgot by this point that the server was the live server. I said "ah, that's ok, problems happen, it'll be fixed" and thought nothing of it, the tech staff I was training didn't seem bothered either.

I then drove back to the office. It's when I got back that I found a call had been put into support whilst on my way back. This was when the "Oh ****, what have I done!" moment came. It seems that this issue was spreading like a virus on all their machines, which makes sense, as the self heal would run on the client, download the update and then the next time it should run, it'd run the buggered version, which would generate the error.

Once I realised what I had done, I went straight to my boss and put my hands up to it. I said that the solution was to get a non-buggered version of the self heal app onto the server, then get it to the client computers and get it run. I said the simple way to do this would be to email the updated version to users and then tell them to run the app.
The other option would be to manually install the file on all computers, or put the updated version on the server, connect to the server and run the updated version.

The client was, understandably not impressed with what I had done, however my boss backed me up, said that I had admitted my mistake, apologised on my behalf and pointed out that I had asked if this was a live system, and been told it was and that I had stated this might not be a wise idea, but advised it would not be a problem.
The solutions I provided were not to the clients liking, they wanted us on-site to reinstall on all the computers (at least 500) at our own expense, as it would cost them a fortune in overtime to fix it.
In the end they resolved it themselves without further interaction from us.

The only other screw-up that I can recall is that I was booked to run a course in Cincinnati. I had my flight details and was flying out of Toronto. I thought the flight was at 6:05AM, so I got up early, went to the airport, found there wasn't a flight at 6:05, the check-in staff got me booked onto the next flight however. So off I went. I land and decide to check in with the office. They ask me where I am, I tell them. There is shocked silence. It turns out that the flight was for 6:05PM and not AM, thus I'm basically a day early. Whoops! The boss calls me an idiot but laughs. I rent a car and bugger off to the hotel and spend the rest of the day lounging around

I got a big round of applause when I got back to the office

Daz and Telboy

When is it going to be actionable? As of now!

I said in my above post that continuing to pick on spelling and grammar when it is clearly winding people up and is only to the detriment of the thread can only be regarded as a form of trolling. Furthermore, reveling in the fact that your posts cause discord is just bad form.

Similarly there is simply no need for outbursts involving insults and profanity. I don't really give a damn whether you're a 15 stone hard as nails monster, or a 6 stone weakling. We expect people on here to show a bit of civility towards each other, or ignore people they find objectionable.

I have a lot of time for you both if truth be known, but you have both exhibited conduct on this thread that was out of order and the whole row has accordingly been deleted.

I've cut you both some slack here, but it's time to draw a line in the sand on this issue. If you have a problem with each other, ignore each other. If you see conduct that you feel should be actionable i.e. someone being pestered unnecessarily about spelling and grammar at the expense of a thread OR ***** waving RTM and we'll deal.

All this on-line squaring up is just so damned pointless!

Now, lets get back on topic please.

I've got it right now. Under no stress, no previous difficulties with the day and for no other reason, after a minor mistake of putting too many numbers into the photocopier for how many copies I wanted, I've managed the punch the screen and crack the LCD display.

I couldn't stop the copier from printing 100 instead of 10 and for no real reason other than temper I've flaming punched the screen and its knackered.

I'm assuming it can be fixed (it cost us nearly £4K) but even then I really can't see the bill being under £1000.

I was going to ask if we're getting bonuses this year - not likely now
