That's because they are honest men with working class ideals of fairness and justice ...... the opposite to the Tories led by an old Etonian, we all know (or should have learnt by now) that the Tories will line the pockets of the rich and remove employment safeguards.

I admire Mandelson and think he is a master political animal - but, when he offered that fake statement about it being so sad, just before Xmas, I could have punched the TV!

On another note, reading the Scunthorpe Corus' site newspaper (yes they are still printing this off in FULL colour as a free paper in these hard times ), they claim the Indian side of Tata steel is set for 12% growth next year alone - far higher then even China and its new powerstations etc.

Hey I heard the weathers hot in India so maybe I'll bugger off there when I'm qualified (make the best out of a scary situation huh?)
I was part of CDBS and when the downturn started to bite late last year it really hit CDBS hard. Of the first batch of redundancies 400 went out of 2400 I think. There have been more since.

Of course I keep in touch with people who have remained in the steel industry and moved outside of Corus. Times are tough but these other steel companies seem to be getting by quite comfortably.

IMHO when demand picks back up I don't think Corus will be in position to take advantage of it as it has got rid of it's capacity and cut back to the current short term lows.

d hutton ............... A recent quote from the FT:-

"An incoming Conservative government “will not sign” contracts for the second wave of Labour’s flagship programme to provide the unemployed with a modernised welfare-to-work service, says the Tory shadow work and pensions secretary.

The second wave of contracts, covering half the country and hundreds of thousands of benefit claimants, is due to take effect from October next year"

Everyone knows that if we want a supported NHS, supported State Schools and a safety net for the poor - the Tories are not the party to deliver that.

I 'should' be a Tory - I stand to gain from the wealthy being looked after - but, I cut my knees on the back streets of Middlesbrough ....... I know what value a pound has to those without one. Therefore I shall never vote Tory. Not say I would vote Labour either, not as they are - but the idea of a Tory Government led by an old Etonian who has a personal fortune of £15 Million makes me sick.

I work for Panels & Profiles which was part of CDBS till they split them into two different divisions(Corus Distribution and Corus Building Systems) .There are alot of people who work for Corus Believe that Tata only bought Corus so they can asset strip the Corus business.

I am very sorry to see all those jobs being lost. Will they ever come back I wonder.

I also feel furious that those incompetent and greedy bankers are pushing to get those bonuses after their gross failings which have left this country in immense debt for years to come. I think they should be allowed to resign and then start again with hopefully with some better people who will do the right thing to get jobs again.

I reckon we should also start again with a new set of MP's.

Can you explain why the gap between the richest, and the poorest in the UK has grown faster under Lying Labour than under ANY other government, then, Pete?

Not getting into the "Tata Steel" thingy. I was the only one of my circle of friends who saw this as a bad thing, when Corus ran into Tata's arms with it's pants down.

Pete, you are making yourself look like a simpleton with your description of the present NL leadership!

How can you possible say they are honest men with ideals of fairness and justice? Who has lied to us continually for the last 12 1/2 years in just about every respect? Have you looked at how most of your hero's have been educated? Have you not noticed how they have always sucked up to big business to their own advantage? Have you also not noticed how little they have cared about the electorate anyway, except the big act when it comes closer to the next election. How does Billy Liar fit in to your description? How well too does the creepy two faced git who supports Flash, or so far anyway, associate with very rich men and grant them special manufacturing licences in Europe? how does he become enobled when he has been been caught out for dishonest behaviour twice?

If you really believe what you say then you are living in Dreamland. Just like what your hero's say, you are telling us is the opposite of the actual truth!

Do you think that a government should be elected because of their party name, or because they might actually do the country a bit of good? What is there to be proud about of a party which has led the country into the depths of moral degradation, done its best to destroy our traditions and ideals, deliberately engineered uncontrollable immigration which has undermined our country in most respects, and ruined our economy leaving us with debts which will still be being paid off by our grandchildren.

The inverted snobbery over Cameron's schooling does not show you in the best light and as little as he impresses me, I think he might support the country at least. I would certainly prefer to let him have a try anyway rather then let these present ********* finally screw this country into oblivion.

Les, you misunderstand what I said ...... I said that the SteelMen of Redcar are honest men with working class ideals.

I did not, repeat not, mean that the Labour party .... or any other party were honest with working class ideals - the expenses issue has shown them all to be in it for themselves ... sorry for the misundertsanding.

Pete, that just shows that you aren't reading most of the replies:

The last comment put in bold to point out to some sensitive souls on SN where some of our overseas aid goes to. And why it shouldn't! But a massive blow to lose the plant. And lookie here ... FT.com / UK / Economy & Trade - Tories hit at decline of manufacturing

"... The Tories seized on Financial Times analysis showing that manufacturing has declined almost three times faster under Labour than it did during the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher ..."
