So it works like this, you enter a 20mph zone, to visit some one, or cause you live there. Several hours later you drive out of that zone like a bat out of hell, no problems as your average is well low.

It really shouldnt be too difficult, and I would guess that most people understand 20mph zones near a school and 30mph in heavily built up areas. Its the spread of ridiculous limits into open countryside or where there really isnt any need for them, where they become a money spinner for the treasury too.

If the limit says 20 then do 20 - if it says 30 then do 30 - too many people treat it as a target, not as a maximum!

What some are doing here is pleading to be allowed to break the law ..... maybe the thief who steals your car wants you to be a bit soft on him, because he had a bad day in the pub!? What would you do? Wish him dead, tortured or ... let off with a slap wristie?

And while I'm on my soapbox .... let's fine those who use their mobile phone while holding it, £1000 and 10 points on their license!!

It's about time we reclaimed the streets from the speeders and mobile phone uses ..... and incidentally, if anyone claims they cannot drive at 20 - ban them for 5 years and make them take their test again after that time ....... grab the streets back for the law abidding!

See post #24.

The point is not whether people can or can't stick to speed limits, but whether the limit is appropriate in the first place. Every speed limit is not justifiable under all conditions, sometimes they should be higher, and sometimes lower. The problem is that cameras cannot differentiate between the poor driver and the person who strays above, or deliberately exceeds the posted limit because the conditions are suitable. Human beings used to use discretion to enforce the law appropriately.

You are SO wrong - or are Mrs Cruise control everywhere!

There is one speed-camera where I live that you have to actively brake for as its downhill. I constantly stare at the speedo for this one as sensible aware 'looking ahead' driving doesnt apply here - only aboslutes of speed, your honour! Cleverly it is also situated just before a pedestrian crossing and I know where I would rather be looking at the time Its negative impact 'policing' with real world safety and awareness diminished. Still, as long as the 'perps' all finish at 4 on a Friday, chief gets paid over £150k and they all get a nice pension who gives a shhh about the punters practical safety amidst all these lucrative invoices sent?

D (who saved his son by 2" half way across a zebra crossing on sunday from a car that didnt stop and hence feeling as anti-'civil service time waster crapster' as possible as well as the cops that havent got back to me since. Still, lets allcontinue to focus on the important easy, less real world relevant sh..t ehh?)

I don't get why people are saying "oh no, that means we will have to spend all our time looking at our speedo's rather than looking out for kids since we now have to do 20 mph"......Whatever happened to driving through the same areas at 30, whilst maintaining that speed, and still somehow looking out for kids etc?

Remember a few years back when "non-standard" typeface nr plates were outlawed ... nothing to do with the creeping increase in cameras over recent years I'm sure Standard Govt practice seems to be to bring in something "silently" then roll it out over a nr of years on a massive scale

Do you actually read posts which offer an explanation over driving to 20 mph limits?

Terminator,

Cant see why you feel you have to correct my posts. I wrote mine for a considered reason, write your own rather than alter mine!

I don't think it was wrong, I find occasionally I am breaking the law in some of the 20 limits around here for the reasons I quoted above even though I don't intend to.

I thinks its rude to alter a quoted post!

So, can we all agree that 20 is plenty .. and it is as easy to drive at 20 as it is 30, 40, 50, 60 or 70?

In addition we can all agree that a speeding fine is an optional payment, it need not be paid - but, if you choose to speed and be anti-social then there is a cost to be paid.

It only applies if you speed!
Or if you do get fined, you can refuse to pay it, go to court and try to justify why you going faster than the law stated.

So it's no different to what applies now - you do something wrong, you get a fine, you can take it on the chin or contest it. So the optional part is in committing the offence or not, rather than the accepting the punishment...

Its all about trust in our various laws, that the rules are just, honourable and something that the general public support. They will support reasonable speed limits because many make common sense. I did say many, not all. So its those badly set limits that give the good ones a bad name.

I wish I lived in your decent and happy world!

Justice, honor, and common sense have long since departed this land, and won't be back in my lifetime

Thats it exactly. I would never complain over a sensibly applied speed limit. Its the ones that I often suspect are set by people who can't drive a car anyway going by their apparent lack of understanding or common sense.

Yep! Its what makes me 'anti' too - the departure of common sense and perspective. Its all fine for those that follow like sheep, but most of us would prefer to be treated a bit more intelligently. That used to happen when they strode around like real men (!) and didn't hide behind paperwork, dodgy stats, jobsworths and cameras.
