Better off than hitting someone while looking at the passenger whilst taliking to them or looking over your shoulder to chastise(or whatever) the kids in the back seats, I'd have hoped. At least you are looking where your going.
I take calls when driving only if I have my headset on. Don't make calls on the move, they can wait. I often inform the caller that I am driving and they do not have my undivided attention.

The headset will help of course. As you say, conversations do divide one's attention while driving.

Yes of course that sort of behaviour that you describe amounts to the same thing. If the result turns out the same way then one thing is every bit as bad as the other. How can anyone argue against that?

The suggestion / argument being made though is that using a headset is no different or worse than a number of other scenarios like having screaming children in the car or holding a conversation with someone sat next to you in the passenger seat for example. If anything you could suggest that it's actually less so since there isn't a physical presence of someone to distract you as most people invariably will look at the person they're talking to or the child they're shouting at for beating cr4p out of it's sibling. That and the line about being distracted by pushing buttons on the phone doesn't stand since 1) it's no different to pushing the button on your radio and 2) there's an assortment of technologies to facilitate answering a call without even touching the phone handset - voice activation, remote button placed on the steering wheel, button on the headset etc.

I stand by my comment about using a headset, I am well used to using those over the years and understand their value in such cases.
If you have people in the car distracting you in the manner you suggest, then it is down to you to ignore it completely or if necessary, stop and sort them out!
Just like pressing buttons on a mobil phone, it is every bit as distracting to re-tune a radio, or re-select a cd, you will not be looking at the road for a while and that is just as dangerous and has caused accidents as well.
If you do have all the latest bells and whistles on the wheel then of course it will improve the situation, as I in fact suggested about a headset. Not everyone is in that position of course, in fact more likely the majority are not!
Of course, if you have Vox fitted then all those noisy children could well be firing it off all the time!
