Leona Lewis - A Moment Like This
One million copies of the winner's single, a cover of Kelly Clarkson's first single "A Moment like This", were pre-ordered by stores, although at the time, the winner of the show had not been announced and it was unknown who would be releasing the single. On 24 December, "A Moment like This" was crowned the 2006 UK Christmas number-one single, having sold 571,253 copies, beating Take That's single "Patience", and outselling the rest of the Top 40's sales combined. It has been reported that one chain was "shifting more than 100 of her CDs a minute". The single became the biggest downloaded song in 2006, beating Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy". The single stayed at number one for four weeks, and also stayed at the top spot in the Irish Singles Chart for six weeks. It went on to sell in the region of 1,000,000 copies.
Leon Jackson - When You Believe
On December 23, 2007 it debuted at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, making it the coveted Christmas number one with sales of over 275,000 copies. The song has sold 490,000 copies in the UK as stated by the Official UK Charts Company
Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah
It sold 576,000 copies in its first week, becoming the fastest selling single released by a woman in the UK, to become the Christmas number one

Conclusive proof that Britain is full of easily led people with little taste, cant say RATM demonstatrates anything to the contrary but at least it isnt a gushing Xfactor auntie friendly ballad, f*ck you I wont do what you told me, great, perhaps "Stuck in the Middle"
By Stealers Wheel or even Smells Like Teen Spirit may have been less offensive but oh well, never mind !

It's during a moment like this that I'd like to climb a mountain and sing Hallelujah.
Well done music fans around the world.
When you believe in something you can acheive!
Well, thats my goal anyway.

I think anything that dosent come off of the crap factor should get it, That program symbolises everything that's wrong with the music industry nowaday's, why can't we have band's like The Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, The Who The Beatles etc etc nowadays every thing is f,ing kiddie bands or boy bands or girl bands or similar pish! ![Mad](images/smilies/mad.gif)

I am absolutely bemused that anyone thinks they've proved anything by preventing an X Factor winner getting a Christmas number one. I think it shows more about humans' ability to be swept along on a bandwagon than any real "protest". When Joe is number one next week what will you have achieved? Nothing, form where i'm sitting. All very strange but sadly predictable.

Although, Tel.. think of it thus, the ones who have took a stance, have stuck the bird (seasonal ,eh

I personally think the song choice *for* the campaign was incidental to the greater picture as it was more the groups NAME that stands out here.

That's the point though, do you really think Cowell gives a toss?
Do you really think the next X Factor won't be the most watched show next year?
Do you really think the teeenagers who buy most of the X Factor music will suddenly realise the error of their ways and start listening to "proper" music?
It's farcical, it really is.

True Tel, but at least some people will sleep soundly, safe in the knowledge they've given Cowell a *message*, then in the morning when they awake, they will watch Jezza Kyle on TV

But it's a pretty sad state of affairs that i cant remember the last overtly political 'pop' song to get into the top ten let alone no.1 (probably something or other by Coldplay)

Look at the economics of the whole thing.
X Fadtor generated in the region of £80-100m of revenue for ITV - of which Simon gets a fair chunk.
RATM sold around 500,000 copies, many of which were sold at below wholesale (which is 40p). So let's be optimistic and say the average sale price was 50p.
So marketing maching creates £100m.
Misguided sheep generate £0.5m.
I wonder who is quaking in their boots...
...that's right, no-one.
And the RATM song is still crap and to say it is there because it is real music is a total farce!

I reckon that was far more true of RATM where I suspect every buyer has not listened to the dulcet tones!
At least with X Factor many of the 'fanbase' will have tuned in every week, watched Joe sing his tiny little tonsils out.
I also wonder how many people who bought RATM had even heard of them, or the song, before they stuck their 29p in the Amazon meter on the back of a Facebook group.

Good letter in this morning's London Metro;
Exactly
The funny thing about this whole thing is that all the RATM followers are spouting "I won't do what you tell me" while doing exactly what someone has told them. Oh, the irony. Also, we have two campaigns urging people to legally buy copies of two records that are both on a Sony-owned record label. Sony's a forerunner in fighting illegal downloads, so is this the greatest marketing trick or what? Either way, Sony execs are laughing all the way to the bank. If you really want to make a statement, don't buy either record.
Exactly
