But those that do are people of taste and discernment. Their choice of what constitutes good and important music counts more, by a factor of 1000:1, and the retrospective view of music historians will bear this out.
RATM aren't your cup of tea, Trout, that's clear; but they were/are an extremely important and influential band. It's excellent to see them being given the exposure, and what a typically moral move by them to donate the profits to Shelter.

Hey Bub,
oh please don't spoil the fun with a sensible post![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Your contention is somewhat elitist though as to what defines taste, discernment and history. The Spice Girls may not be musical nirvana but will be regarding by music historians as an interesting point in the history of contemporary music. They were a manufactured band who changed the shape of popular music.
There are many factors (including the X Factor) that shape the perception of contemporary music. I am sure the RATM campaign will be a small footnote somewhere in the history of this decade. Although I think it will be better reported as an example of the power of viral marketing.
I am not sure I agree with how influential they were and certainly believe that the concept and campaign rather then the music was behind getting to number one; strangely analogous to the other number one contender. You have to see at least some irony in that?
Of course the 'fans' think a point has been made; a point I suspect is pretty weak in commercial reality. A much better point, and a far bigger impact would be made on the structure of record and recording funding if the record buying public bought music in the way it used to; and probably just as important, stopped sharing it for free electronically.
As I said earlier - if great music is important to you then go out and buy it (which I am sure you do) - a far more powerful and sustainable engagement with the music industry than fussing over what Simon Cowell is up to this Christmas.
To my mind the only good thing to come of this is a decent lump of funds to Shelter at an important time of year.

Whitchever way you look at it, I thought killing in the name was a cracking track when first released, and it remains a cracking track now ![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)
Joe's track, on the otherhand, is a bit weak, and not as good as the original, which was a bit pish itself.
I wonder how many people bought Joe's single because they think he's cute?

Edited to say - Snazy just pm'd me and said that he wants his name added to the list. Says he thinks Joe's bum is "peachy", whatever that means!

IMO, it never really mattered what the 'protest' song was, it was just done to protest against another X Factor single taking the Christmas spot. It's not really about RATM particularly, any half decent song would've done, and people would've bought into it.
Personally, I don't like the X Factor single, hence I didn't buy/download it. But I'm not just going to go out and buy an agreed single just to stick one up to SC. I'll buy what I want to, and tbh I don't care what reaches no.1. It doesn't matter to my life. People like/buy into whatever floats their boat.
I think in this, both sides are shown up to be sheep. Going with the whole X Factor thing, or buying a single they may not like just to follow that crowd. Yes it can be thought of as a protest, but to me that would still say the music doesn't really matter either way.

But Lisa, you must admit that a solo protest is totally ineffectual. You really need to nail your colours to a mast, and this mast was the one most likely to make an impression. If you didn't support the RATM campaign but still disapproved of the X-Factor, then you are the equivalent of a Lib-Dems voter.

Never expected that comparison, but I see your point.
I'll just stay happy, listening to my music, ranging from the very crap to the sort of crap, to some decent stuff (imo) depending on my mood.

Only if you're losing your grip on reality.
Downloading RATM was nothing more than a thumbed nose to those attempting to control what the lumpenproletariat (
) buy. It was a blip. Generally we music lovers and purists don't have the stomach for the fight. The commercialist wing of music is relentless - it's like a Hydra. You cut off Pete Waterman's bollocks and Simon Cowell's bollocks grow back in their place. A small victory was achieved, but let's not pretend anything's been changed.

It was still worth doing, though. Certain high-waisted tossers didn't get their own way for a week, and certain whiffy cardboard-box dwellers got some blankets and Baxter's instead of Knorr for a couple of nights.

Shove it up ya bumbum. Shove it up ya bumbum.
