Disagree, we've got three and they've been chugging along just fine. Same when it snowed last year, and the year before that, and there some impressive hills by us that aren't always gritted. Certainly no issue if the driver is aware of whats happening and how to get the best out of them.

The only issue they have is that when cold the autobox on the 528 has a habit of pushing the car forwards whilst your foot is on the brake; the front wheels are locked but the rears are spinning (slow-mo burn out).

Easily fixed by popping it in manual mode and manually selecting second gear (it allows the use on second gear from standstill just for this very purpose).

...Or just by putting the handbrake on a few clicks, to overcome teh creeping effect of the autobox

The latter trick also help if it gets stuck, turn off the traction control, and use the handbrake to stop the free wheel from spinning on the open diff. Just remember to take off the handbrake once moving otherwise it'll spin when you try to slow down.

The 325 and 530 has a virtual LSD, which does the same thing as the handbrake trick anyway. So its just a case of turning off the DSC to stop it cutting the power and being very delicate with the controls.

Meanwhile, my mate got my old scooby stuck < sigh >

Yes well I was going by my own experience with that old 535i E12 which was truly awful in the snow and the most modern Beemer I have had was an M3 Evolution which was a very good car but I never drove it in the snow since there wasn't any while I had it..

I was going by my early experiences and also what others have told me, sounds like the more modern one are better then, and yes all the old tricks can work for you too.
