I like the definition:-

If you are working class, you wash your hands before going to the toilet.

Being a Mechanical Engineer primarily in the chemical industry and using the above definition, I'm definitely working class. Don't want any of those chems on little Steve

However, I live in Lymm, Cheshire so must be wanna-be Middle Class.

Doesn't help being tarred with the same brush as everyone else unemployed though does it, whether you're actively looking to help yourself.

For the record I'd class myself as working class as thats what I am. I work to live and don't need to try live beyond my means to fit in with a group of snobbish arrogant middle classers

Financially likely to capital rich, cash poorer. Would certainly reduce expenditure to prioritise building of wealth.

Traditional values driven and likely to be a traditional profession e.g. accountant, actuary, head teacher, senior management, scientist, lawyer, senior police officer, partner, doctor.

Strong values around community, possibly Rotarian, Round Table, Masonic connections

Clubby - traditional London club, exclusive golf club

Holiday in Scotland, Tuscany, their own gite in France or Pollensa, never the Canaries

Media - Telegraph, Independent, Times, Guardian reader; more likely to watch BBC than ITV and on BBC more interested in BBC2

Potential school governor/community leader/magistrate or similar

Private school education and private school for their kids at the expense of all else (unless they are middle class socialists then they will fight tooth and nail to get their kids into a decent state school).

Drives ten year old Audi or Volvo.

Shops at Sainsburys or Waitrose, has never been to Aldi or Lidl. Might go to Morrisons due to local sourcing policy.

Strong environmentalists.

Will always think you should wear a tie with a suit.

There is some food for thought

The old class types are not really used anymore in favour of socio-economic groupings. However to keep to the topic, class classification is mainly defined by occupation and general lifestyle.

Blue collar workers on a wage are seen as working class.

White collar workers on salaries are middle class, if you went to university, you automatically are middle class regardless of upbringing or background.

Upper class is something you cannot move into, rather you were born into it and is reserved for aristocracy. Although there is the Upper Middle which is a mid point between working class and upper class, where you have gained enough wealth/influence to mix in with the aristocrats.

Hope that clears things, oh and i'm middle class.

Release the hounds....

In verity we are the poor. This humanity we would claim for ourselves is the legacy, not only of the Enlightenment, but of the thousands and thousands of European peasants and poor townspeople who came here bringing their humanity and their sufferings with them. It is the absence of a stable upper class that is responsible for much of the vulgarity of the American scene. Should we blush before the visitor for this deficiency?

Hmm,

I suppose we are both working class, we have to work to earn money, to pay the bills and feed and cloth ourselves. we do not have a trust fund or any other source of income other than child allowance. . Our kids go to public school. Not exactly sure what the definiion of middle or upper class is exactly but he have to work for a living, so i consider myself working class.

When you come to think about it, what on earth does distinction of whatever of those classes really matter anyway?

What really counts is a person's character and how they conduct themselves through life.

I have never felt I needed to take any notice of a person's position relative to any of those quoted classes or divisions of them.
