Rough stuff.

I think you should tell us all what company it is and where they are to be found so we can avoid people like that!

Just got to buy a "running in please pass" Sticker

Tony,

if it as my 2.5 they were rebuilding, for my own piece of mind, i would pay them the difference for uprated head gaskets, but that's just me

That would probably invalidate my warranty Tony :-(

Default Sti 330s engine failure

Recently purchased a 330s unaware of these problems. I'm in Birmingham the car I bought was in Glasgow so I sent the aa in for an inspection. The report came back giving the car an excellent bill of health, 30000 miles immaculate, still on original tyres, well looked after.
So I drive it in Glasgow before handing over the money but can't drive it properly because of traffic.

Anyway I hand over my money, thinking well its got extended warranty so should all be fine.

Get on the motorway and it spluttering when under load.

When I get home, I take it to a dealer to look at thinking its a pipe or. Something, then I get the call of dread...sorry sir, we think its pistons...needs a rebuild..

That was two and a half months ago..I still don't have it back..!!

First of all auto protect wont honour the warranty as the apparently you need to transfer it within seven days...how effing unreasonable...after a lot of wrangling they transfer the warranty, so the garge try to process the claim, but now they want the. V5, but its been sent off again to transfer the cherished plate...I still don't have the v5, so I still don't have my car... Autoprotect are jokers and will do whatever they can to get out of settling the claim...I'm so p???ed off !!

It transpires that the car had a new engine only 3 months before I bought it, I spoke to the dealer that installed it, and they told me that they upgraded the ecu at the same time, the current deAler that had the car checked it and confirmed it was the new revision.

Whilst the engine was apart I said to the dealer, how do I know it won't do it again, he suggested I put cosworth pistons in, but that was £500, so I said no, but after reading this thread of dread, I wished I spent the money on them and not the fancy bits I put on it...

Should I sell it or keep it..I just piano blacked the interior fitted mesh grills, a splitter, rear waste spoiler, exhaust trims, etc etc..it's a great car..but I'm worried its going to do the same thing????

That's it though... it's not a great car is it? It's a lemon and if it's done it twice before and the new rebuild is the same as the previous why will it not do it again?

Get rid as you'll only ever be worrying about every little noise it makes etc.

I feel your pain, as my RB320 HG failed, even though it was standard & serviced twice as many times as Subaru recommended! Once the block was opened #4 piston had signs of cracking!

With all the failures of the EJ257 block on this thread & here https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...-failures.html & that's just on this forum alone, I think it's mad that this hasn't been on watchdog yet!

BMW cars were on there the other week & I bet they've had far less of an overall % of vehicles fail, to that sold!!

Rallyroge, sounds like some underlying issue IMO. If it was my car, and it was too late to opt for the updated pistons, I'd get it rebuilt and then have it mapped straight away by e.g andy Forrest as at least then the map would be safe, and if there was a detonation problem he'd be able to tell you.

The 2.5 does seemingly suffer, but to do it twice in three months points to an underlying issue IMO.

Not great advice I'm afraid, forged pistons on their own aren't a fix. You would need forged pistons, uprated head gaskets and uprated studs to hold them down as a minimum. This would of course then need a remap and this build will push 370bhp all day long. This is the advice that seems to be the general consensus among engine builders on here.

Two engines in three months is highly unusual, it could be that you've been very unlucky and had a lemon of an engine reinstalled into your car three months ago but it could also be that someone's buggered up the second installation.

Either way someone I would ensure that you have some kind of guarantee on the work that has just been done put into writing from the dealer as the 330s is a very nice car that should be enjoyed.

You're in Solihull, if you want true piece of mind you could try having a chat with David at API engines near Warwick they specialise in Subaru rebuilds or Finch Motorsport in Northampton, he also rebuilds Subaru engines and built engines for F1. Alan Jeffery in Plymouth is also highly regarded as a Subaru engine builder.

If it's the extended Autoprotect supplied warranty that you have, then you have no contract with Subaru. Autoprotect are in the driving seat with your claim

Morally though Subaru are fully responsible for the issue but I guess we already know where they stand on this.
