This is the most prolonged cold snap for 30 years...
Can't agree with you there, taking responsibility for your own safety isn't something to be ashamed of. It seems that when conditions do turn bad, some people view it as a sort of macho p*ssing competition to see who can overcome the greatest adversity and make it into the office.
I sympathise with those of you who have a business to run. I really do. But how many of you would be prepared to fully cover your employees' losses if they have an accident or become stranded trying to get into work? That's no greater risk than you're asking your employees to take; since you're the ultimate beneficiary of their efforts, shouldn't you also consider shouldering the risk?

Sorry Les, I didn't mean to misquote you, but I think it comes down to what we each mean by 'taking responsibility'.
For example, the A3 near me was one of the worst hit roads in the country a couple of days ago, with people having to abandon their cars by the side of the road and being taken to makeshift rescue centres for the night. I would argue that, for those people, their decision to travel was the wrong one - and whilst perhaps they couldn't possibly have known how exactly how bad conditions actually were, we do all now have access to travel and weather information.
That's a big difference between now and the 'good old days', and I do feel we have a responsibility to use that information to make informed decisions, rather than just looking out the window and seeing what it's like in the immediate vicinity. I, for example, reckon the roads within sight of my house look fine - but having done a little more research I know the roads around my workplace are still impassable.

The weather back home is nothing in comparison.
I'm currently working in Brussels.
We were delayed leaving Dublin on Wednesday because of the snow.
So instead of leaving at 6pm, we didn't go until the following morning at 7am
We landed in Brussels on a snow covered runway - no problems at all.
They just get on with it
Colleagues of mine were meant to leave last night at 9pm.
Due to Dublin weather they didn't leave until 12.30
I just hope that tonight I get away at the scheduled 9pm time.
