Our school had no grit that they can use on the paths and have asked if any parents could provide anything that they could use to get the school open. It worked and the kids went to school. A little communication and common sense goes a long way

er, no inconvenient as it is for parents, the teachers are being told to stay at home by the schools/LEA. Hardly fair to dock them pay in which case

OK, the majority say pay them - I say they should be in clearing the site ..... not sat at home laughing at all those in the real world fight through the snow to do a days work (the people who only get 28 days holiday - not 70!!!!)

I still propose the best idea is for the Teachers to come in Half Term, end of May, - yes. maybe they have booked a week in the Bahamas - but though.

I doubt very much they are sat at home laughing. lol @ that!

Why should they be in clearing the site? It's not in their job description I am sure.

Also have you not considered that their own children might not be at school, therefore leaving them no choice but to take the time off, regardless of the situation.

If you are jealous of the large amount of holidays they get, why don't you consider a career change?

Tell us all, exactly what are they going to do in that week, which they can not accomplish at home?

Not jealous at all .... I get a decent amount of holiday myself

They will be working where the Senior Management Team can see them and where they can see that work is actually being done .... rather than claiming that marking was being done whilst at the side of the Hotel Swimming Pool with Dry Martini in hand!!!!!

What you have missed though, the responsibility's that come with being a working professional include being able to manage your work load (unsupervised) as you see fit.

So as long as it gets done, whats the problem? If it is not done, then they won't be in that profession very long will they.

That's a disgrace!!

Why don't the Teachers go in at the weekend and clear the grounds??

There's going to be one almighty backlash to this - especially when the Teachers go on strike for more money and longer holidays!!

Pete, maybe you should be there cracking the whip?

Like Dedrater said, part of being a professional is managing you time/work accordingly.

If you are a cook, the Curry/toad in the whole (whatever) isn't going to make itself. The same goes for teaching, they can't spend their days staring into space and sunning themselves by a pool all of the time.

Yes, they are entitled to a holiday like everyone else, but they still have to prepare for their lessons.

you are a bunch of dopey basterds arent you. I remember the last teacher bashing thread. The reason they are closed is the schools have a responsibility to protect the kids from harm so if the school feels it isnt safe for the kids to walk in or the bus firms arent running like they haven't been here then there is no school. Its not for any other reason my wife teaches in a good school in liverpool and has been in for the last 2 days and only missed one day.
My work closed up and they didnt dock pay i suggest you look for better jobs and stop looking at ones with privilages , they actually get unlimited sick pay if you wanted to consider that in what you'd like to change about teaching perks.
Why do you all insist on writing such drivel in your spare time?

What poppycock!!

Only 12, yes 12, incompetent Teachers (out of 500,000) have been sacked in 30 years!!

Don't tell me that they should be allowed to supervise themselves ......

I would like to see lesson inspections which are random and NOT notified! But the NUT thinks that 'real world' response is unreasonable - pathetic! Not only do we have to warn Teachers when their lesson will be monitored, we have to tell them what aspect of the lesson we will be looking at!!

Teaching is so 'out of touch' it's unreal ..... lets drag them, kicking and spitting, into the real world the rest of us have been living in .....

My missus has not even been into work for the past 3 days, she had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out and has been smacked up on Codine ever since

Her school has stayed open, so she timed it right
I feel sorry for her though she is in a lot of pain, take the codine, kill the pain but it makes her sick, or skip the codine, dont feel sick, but suffer from killer pain

It's not just the education system that is inspected like that. My other half is a engineer surveyor for cranes, mobile cranes and all types of lifting plant. He still has to tell people when he is going to turn up. Not that it makes a blind bit of difference.

I see what you are saying though. Schools should be inspected spontaneously, so that they can be seen as they are on a daily basis. Ofsted inspect within the private sector totally at random. Well, within a time frame of several weeks, just as it should be, but it still makes it easier for staff to put on a show.

Now, now, no need to get nasty .....

She had the unique chance to deliver a superb lesson to nine children - excellent!! I hope she took advantage and delivered.

Leave the dealing of the Parents to those charged with doing that, the Governors and Senior Team ...... just turn up and teach.

Yet its alright for the TEACHERS to go out and do the CARETAKERS WORK .. ie, clean the playground, surrounding areas of snow and ice? you really do shoot yourself in the foot at times dont you.

Despite the fact I agree that they should be paid if the school is closed, as it could be for a variety of reasons, the attitude above actually annoys me.

There will be alot of people out there at the moment, dragging themselves into work to be turned away without pay (and I'd imagine just from some people on this board that they aren't all in crap jobs) that would be happy to do alternative work in order to still be paid.

On top of that, if only I could take the attitude of 'it's not my job to sort out'. Granted, I have what you would call a rubbish job (shop), but we have had to go in despite the weather, relying in my case on (bad) public transport. Only due to some being less willing we have had to do jobs that aren't our jobs. We have our own workload to begin with, yet on top of that, we are having to do other people's as well. It's not our job, but you get on with it.

The carpark isn't our responsibility, nor our job to maintain, yet we are going out there helping people that have got stuck, helping clear it as best as possible (as we have no grit left).

It doesn't annoy me that teachers aren't going in if the school is closed (as they can work from home), but the attitude of 'it's not my job' does. It's exactly this sort of attitude that is grinding this country down.

What if you have several Teachers approaching retirement age, in no position to do manual labor? Should it then be the responsible of the younger teaching staff?

Pete, where do you get off referring to 500,000 teachers as being incompetent?

Only 12, yes 12, incompetent Teachers (out of 500,000) have been sacked in 30 years!!
I think you've dug a hole with this thread (imho) - however, you've acheived what you set out to do (again) - get a rise out of a lot of people.
Sadly, you've had to be-little a very hard-working profession in the process.

However, there is a fantastic phrase which if I get response to this will only confirm my suspicions -

"Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and THEN beat you with their superior experience"

And on that note, I will now become a bemused observer on this thread (with my G&T)

Dedrater:-

I think you will find the older teachers are the one's zimmer frame deep in snow with a shovel doing all they can!!!

It's something with the kiddies (under 35 years old) - who seem to think they are 'above' manual work, seem to think the taxpayers owe them a jolly good job at high pay with long, long holidays!!

And, why - oh, why - is drinking on school premises considered a teachers 'right'?!!! It's a disgrace - but, an example of the attitude of some teachers!! A School should be a no alchohol zone!

Dan

Point taken - I have just re-read that ..... and can see how you could get the wrong end of the stick.

What I meant was out of 500,000 Teachers - not all are incompetent, of course!!

Sorry for the mis-understabding

But it is left to the governors and the senior team to arrange school closures. So what are they allowed to do and not to do? maybe you should decide?
