There are some tight f*ckers on here! I reckon you should just pay the £250. If you start getting second hand bumpers, they are going to cost more to get painted, so it will end up roughly the same anyway!

£250 sounds a bargain to me for body repairs  (especially when you take into account that the insurance excess usually is around that amount anyway).

Its going to cost that much to do the bumper on our Seat - and thats a scuff on the corner (absolutely no other damage - I've had the bumper off to check, and all clips and tags are perfect).

Would like to point out; car parked on corner? Not a corner of a junction by per chance or within 32ft (10metres) of a junction? If so, its illegally parked. Doubt it would change anything (if you poke plod enough or find a friendly PCSO nearby, they may put a ticket on it) , but it gives a reason for the cause of the regular accidents.

I would nip round with £150 and wave it under his nose, then a few weeks later report it as an obstruction, it shouldnt be on a junction.

Dont FFS turn up in your Audi !

Thanks for all the comments. I'm pleased to know we have some experts on driving here as such advice is always invaluable.

I've paid him what he asked for, irresepective of the arguments for / against, I don't think its unreasonable.

On the contrary, I consider them to be lucky that my daughter is honest.

With no witnesses, and them not even knowing any damage had been done- I don't think we'd have had any trouble getting away with it if we were so inclined.

fair play to you, and fair play to your daughter for doing the right thing, i can imagine there would have been a few people who would have driven off hoping they hadn't been seen.

Just make sure you get the owner to sign a written reciept, confirming that the matter is concluded and no further action will be taken.

I can't make any judgement on her culpability without any pictures...

There was some mention by the lady that answered the door that this was the third time this had happened, although its not clear if it was this car or not. I'd certainly refrain from parking my car on a corner if it kept getting crashed in to.

What's niggling me slightly is that its an old Rover 200, N plate, probs not worth a great deal. The rear bumper is cracked and one of the mountings has snapped off- I'm not going to argue whether it was my daughters impact that caused it.

The chap is telling me that its going to be £125 for a new bumper and £125 to paint said bumper and fit it. I'd have thought for such an age of car a second hand bumper off ebay ought to suffice.

Anyway, regardless, it was my daughters fault so we'll pay for it. I haven't agreed to the 'estimate' of £250 yet and am mulling it over, hence my post.

Any thoughts?

This might help.

I reversed off my drive into a moped (Daughters ex-boyfriends)
I had told him NOT to park where he did several times as it is difficult to see due to foliage blocking view etc. But he chose to.

I nudged it - It didn't fall over.

I cracked the plastic covering on his right hand indicator.

I wound my window down and told him to move it out of the way and I'd be back in 10 mins after picking the wife up from the train station.

To cut a long story short.

The damage was a cracked lens cover on the right hand indicator and the indicator arm was bent.

Told him I'd get it sorted at a local garage. If he took it to one local to him and let me know the price - I'd sort it.

Got a phone call.

Front Forks are bent (from front towards back) and rear wheel is also bent outwards to the left.

I questioned whether my 2mph impact which didn't even knock the bike over could have:

a) Broken indicator Lens.
b) Bent indicator Stalk.
c) Front forks bent back.
d) Pushed rear wheel out to the left.

Garage Engineer said a) + b) probably c) & d) unlikely in the extreme.

I asked for the cost to fix a) + b) and got a quote of £65 - £70 which I guess was not unreasonable in todays world.

I then get a visit from the (soon to be) ex-boyfriend

He wants £600 to fix the damage "You" did.

I forced myself to not laugh and say he was "Tripping"
Invited him in and talked through the damage report. Gave him the report from the garage (this was in conjunction with the info that he had been riding the moped on the local Recreation Grounds and had crashed it on several occasions plus the fact he has a habit of pulling wheelies (manually rather than thru engine power) and that his home has no drop kerb and he just barrels it over the kerb to get to his parking space.

As he was from a household that has less disposible income and, at the time, he was going out with my daughter, I decided to do the "Nice" thing

I offered to pay in full for the Indicator damage and also contribute 1/2 towards the other damage on the bike.

I get a call from his mother

"You will pay for it ALL"

Errrrrr - I don't think so

It took 3 months to sort out

Finally - Engineers and insurance agreed I was responsible for £90 worth of damage and the remaining £510 was down to "other" ie the ex-boyfriend.

RESULT I hear you Say.

But Ohhhhhhh Nooooooo.

Despite my explicit instructions to my insurance co. to pay FA without my approval - They paid the £90 damage PLUS

Get this

Rental of a moped

3 Months

£2,100

Two thousand one hundred quid!!!! and it is down against my policy!!!!!!

To say I was furious would be an understatement.

Long Story Short

Take the hit for £200 or so

Then bubble the ba5tard5 to the social.
