Tony, I dont disagree with you, but having driven a couple of GTi-6s and numerous other hot hatches of tbat era, I find they were pretty gutless. I would imagine the extra engineering of chassis to cope with 200bhp would have been financially prohibitive, and they couldnt cost cut on the interior and overall build quality any more, could they?

The 106 rallye's were great cars, especially the later 1.6's which were quite rare.

Totally agree, I was blown away by the 205 GTi when I was given a 'demonstration' as an 18 year old. My mate has one in work, and he is off to Cyprus for three years. He is on about leaving it in his mums back garden . I am gradually bringing him over to my way of thinking, ie. selling it to me for not much! Id look after it!

She's my everyday car in all fairness mate. Got over 148k on the clock now and still runs sweet. Replaced losts of bits, but the engine is untouched bar regular servicing.

Not sure how you can describe them as "gutless" as they still have more torque than several of todays modern hot hatches, they are far from gutless, their 0-100 is still pretty impressive, sub 20's for a hatch that came out 14 years ago... only about 2 secs off a similar aged subaru impreza turbo of the same era.
The chassis would be able to cope with 200bhp, as proven on a few occasions, along with the clutch and gearbox (plus the brakes were better than anything subaru put on a classic ), they were an awesome car when they came out, costing 18.5k new and even now they are a good hot hatch, though the electrical "niggles" that all pugs suffer from (mainly the wonderful design of the inter door/car looms ) make them quite a bargain (just watch the cambelts are changed at 36k as they had a tendancy to snap )

I wont let him leave without either selling it to me or finding a better place to store it! It is in really good nick, no tinworm, and the only problem is a random stalling issue when idling. I like it, and could see myself in it. Rather like Billie Piper!

Common fault is the stalling when idling or bad idle, normally the control valve, for some reason its more promenant on the 1.9's

Tony, Im not looking for an argument about this so I will explain that my experience of gutless is driving experience. Also, as we all know, numbers dont make the car, the driving experience does, and as my experience was with different cars, I have no reason to think I was driving a dud.
Im not looking to criticize another marque to massage the rep of my car, as it is a Bugeye WRX with a relatively small list of things done, and I cant defend the indefensible.

Owned 3 GTI-6's, last one quite happily kept up with a blob wrx (03 plate standard car) in and through the gears, and yes he was trying, trying that much that he did some really stupid manouvres to show me how much of a good driver he was nearly killing a few people in the process but saying that, my spec c didnt feel that quick but outpaced E46 M3's (and yes they were trying also )

That stupid manouevres/nearly killing people is a recurring theme with Impreza drivers. Shame really, we are all tarred with the same sh1tty brush now.
As for the 'dud' comment, they must have all been duds, ......but....... as you have had long term ownership of the vehicle in question, I shall bow to your better knowledge.

I had 2 Impreza's and thought i wanted something more civilized but still quick but(hard to explain) to get the best out of a M3 you got to rag it all the time to get that feeling the away an Impreza feels(maybe due to the M3 being N/A and Impreza being a Turbo)and it was that feeling that i miss.

I dont think its necessarily that the classics prices have dropped into the chavs wage bracket, it is the chavs wages can now cover the price of a newage. Ive seen some Bugeyes, already ugly, treated to another few rounds with the ugly sparring partner by someone with more money than taste.

My old jdm bug gave an m3 plenty of grief. He chased me down a long bypass one damp evening. To be fair he was catching me until we hit a long sweeping bend where he must have had some rear end issues and just couldnt close the gap.. He initially went to overtake just off a round about on a short straight didint have the legs though. At the next roundabout he pulled along side and the rotten git called me wnaker. The ones that spring to mind (apart from the obligatory 93 silver WRX with lexus lights ) are a 52 plate Red Bull stickered up Bugeye (which is actually driven by my Mrs friends boyfriend ), a 54 plate black Blobeye WRX and a 51 playe Bugeye GX driven by some chavvy looking lass

But my car wasnt mapped, it was running the standard JDM map (316bhp), a back box and a panel filter (plus v power and octane booster).
E46 M3's are pretty quick, the E36's aint, the evo versions aint bad though.

Sorry to get this back to the top again BUT, can we just compare like for like for a minute (just humour me), the modded gti-6 that all this fuss was originally about was i beleive a modded top spec pug hot hatch and also a tuners car running approx 2 1/2 times its factory output and comparing it to a scoob in an unknown state of tune, so the only fair thing to do would be to compare it to a 750bhp spec-c tuners car, i wonder what the outcome would be........................................ ....

I've been wondering about the gti6 for a couple of weeks now, as I had a bit of a run-in with one down the motorway goin to brighton on new years. He came bombing down lane 3, so I let him past. He waited for me to pull back out behind him, then he floored it. So I did the same, thinking i'd go bumper-to-bumper in a couple of seconds.

It was strange because he wasn't getting away from me, but nor was I catching up with him? I was very suprised to say the least.

I have a completely standard my99 turbo btw.
