I have just bought a STi Hawkeye with 12,000 miles on the clock and is a nightmare getting into 1st and 2nd when cold but after 5 mins of driving seems to sort it out and turns into a stunning gearbox

I guess you have no idea what oil is in there already, I would think it's still on the original oil.

75w-90 Gear oil

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Motul Gear 300, Silkolene Silktran Syn 5 and Millers TRX. The Castrol Syntrax, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

I reckon changing the gearbox oil will make no difference. As for changing it every 12 months I would not dream of it

Any reason why? If the car has a basic 80w-90 oil in the gearbox, it will be harder to shift when cold than with a good 75w-90 oil

An update: I find that it's only 1st that really has the issue. And if i clutch in and slot it into 1st just short of a full stop (rolling speed) it goes in easier. So it's actually harder going into 1st at a complete stop.
