I,ve owned 4 Imprezas over the last 10 years . A 1993 wrx import ,a STI V4, a 1996 UK turbo and my current car a UK MY 2000 classic. In my opinion the better car to drive day to day is a late model UK. My car is modified with a VF 35, STI 8 top mount , remap etc and is a very quick road car.The car doesn,t need octane booster with the V power and my insurance is less than half of what I was paying for the STI4 .Although I still yearn for a Type r version 6 limited.

THAT'S Pedigree and it's worth far more than any tacky extra a JDM can ever offer

Well, mine was bought new - by me, I have driven every mile it has driven except a few servicing and MOT miles, I have it's history (in English), I have every MOY and every invoice .... I know what oil, fuel and filters it has had - I know everything about it.

Face it all classics are at the bottom of the market now, its all about bang for buck, imports win.

After owning a legacy gtb which was run on 100 ron fuel, when i ran it on superunleaded over here and decatted the exhaust it still only made 267 bhp compared to the standard 280 bhp in japan. When i bought my MY99 uk turbo,it was £160 cheaper to insure than my import legacy. It was bog standard and was running 215 bhp i presume, after a few simple mods and not a lot of cash it is running 241 bhp and there are other uk cars that are running near to 260 bhp and not been remapped. With a uk car : 1.you will pay cheaper insurance, 2.have no need to worry about what octane rating fuel you put in3.find parts a lot easier to obtain(look on ebay see how many td04's there are),4. You can spend £900 - £1100 and have a uk car which can deliver 310 - 330 bhp with ease.

my MY97 facelift was std 208bhp, it was thge car at the time that saw the 5.2 second 0-60 (was it on top gear?) Phase I engine.
even with k&n + full de cat with SUL on the rolling road I negver saw 240hp!

now £2k allows the chavs to have a wrx shed, the early 90's wrx's have gone like the saphire cosworth did with the gazza's.

I'm not a tech but i originally owned a my00 classic and loved it. I did as much as i could including turbo back exhaust, blitz airfilter, hks dump valve and don't laugh but a bleed valve boosting at 0.9 bar. It was my dream car, until my mate bought an EVO 4 and beat me in a straight line.
I now have a sti version 4. It is pretty standard at mo but it's awesome in comparrison. YOu usually remember cars being faster than they actually were. Not in this case, my old uk version is no comparrison what so ever. Import every time. Find it a lot easier to get parts for my import than i did for the uk.

I timed my 97 wrx @ croft race circuit, stock apart from a cat back exhaust and a panel filter (so not even real performance mods imo)
4.57 secs 0-60 iirc
Second fastest car of the day
only beaten by the bloody skyline ![Mad](images/smilies/mad.gif)
Mind you, this was back in the day when 300bhp was some kind of mystical number that was hard to beat.

The silver 97 car is a lightly modded UK version

Your car is usually mapped safe up until the fuel cut anyway.
IIRC my mates 99 uk turbo with a boost controller has put out around 270 for the past 3-4 years, all on the stock ecu.
The 97wrx ecu i had, i took apart and sent the pictures to various other people to confirm it was not meddled with, on the stock vf22 turbo it was peaking at 1.35bar boost and holding around 1.1/1.2 bar till the end, this is a much bigger turbo, running a lot more boost, hence why it is such an improvement (just a little bit laggier)
Turbos i tested on mine
Stock VF22
VF23
VF24
VF28
TD04 (fitted as a stop gap for a few weeks, made no extra power over 1.1bar ish)
TD05-16g
I ran all of these on the stock ECU, just using a boost controller to set the boost (mostlyaround 1.43/1.44 bar ish), without issue.
When the 2.0 lump was removed the pistons were det free........
This is all going back a good while now as i got rid of the scooby about a year ago

you cant map the 97/98 cars or dont you know that???
you cant swap the ecus for wrx one like you stated in an earlier post either.
so 260.1 on a standard ecu for a uk car is rather good,no buggering about with boost controllers etc.
if i get a simtek can get 300 ish with wrx injectors(440)but thats a grand and i would rather have a car that stops and handles as most people whatever they say cant drive their cars properly.done a bit of rallying/12 cars and auto-testing in past few years.

Maybe yours was not running right!!! Even with a full decat and k&n you could very easily make less power than standard as the 97 cars cant be remapped.
My classic (standard) made 243 bhp on a rolling road

The 97/98 ecu has been mapped also can still be mapped by fitting a daughter board, (scooby ecu IIRC). Not really financially viable though given the price of a used pfc.
A WRX ecu will fit in a UK car if you also fit the supporting mods I.e turbo, 440's, maf, e.t.c.
Like stickymicky I have also done a lot of reasearch on this vintage. It is far superior to earlier wrx's. They are 280ps standard.

funny how not a single tuner that has been contacted has said the 97 uk is mappable???
sorry didnt catch the name of your highly reputable tuning business...
i have taken advice from the likes of alan jefferies and scoobyclinic.
on a roll am i?
seems like we have a lot of people on here that can quote lots of facts and figures but get them wrong.
some of us do this for a living.

Allways one ![Whatever Anim](images/smilies/Whatever_anim.gif)
Engine and tuning Products for your Subaru Impreza, Turbo, WRX, STi or P1
Do some research before mouthing off what you've heard on the grapevine. IIRC it was an Australian firm that supplies the chips.

all i know is what reputable tuners have told me and that i cant have my ecu re-mapped and have to go down the simtek route(just waiting to get funds then off to a.jefferies)
just pissed off when people on here try to make people look stupid and make out that they know more than everyone else.
im not a trader or a tuner just a qualified mechanic of nearly 20 years and now a vm in the ghurka transport regiment so know a bit about cars.
maybe people should just try giving advice not trying to be-little people.

Back to car talk an what seems to be a sticking point - 97/98 ecu mappable? i was told by wallace performance aberdeen an awd motorsport perth where my car goes that the 97/98 ecu can not have a piggyback map/ remap so the only option for mapping is a standalone ecu apexi, simtek etc
