I've worked in an IFA practice for 11 years now and I'm not keen on it. I'm qualified but act as paraplanner to two IFAs (doing all the background leg work rather than client facing)

You really have to have the right mind set to be an adviser. Fortunately we don't actually do any "selling" as you would imagine IFAs to do. We charge for advice rather than sell products.

Its been very tough the last 18 months and the FSA will not leave the IFA sector alone until the they finally manage to cripple the system in favour of the banks.

Personally, I would prefer being a solicitor or quantity surveyor but I'm 32 and can't afford to retrain.

Wrighty - think hard before you make a decision although if your career is held back by some schmo it might be wise to look at a sideways move rather than a full on career change.

Want to learn a trade and earn shed loads of money? then learn to become a trader and work in a bank. Obviously you're not gonna get a trader job straight away, do an open university course, get on a graduate scheme. You could even start working in a settlements team before becoming fully fledged trader. You will of course need to keep on top of qualifications and renew your trading license on a regular basis. The good thing is you still have age on your side and with a bit of hard work, determination and dedication, the possibilities are almost endless.

Out of the building trades I'd have to say plumbing would be the way to go! Not exactly that physically active, but a good thing to get into.

If you want physically active, I used to build all sorts of steel framed buildings, like industrial stuff, farm sheds, etc. That's as active as you could ever want, but you're never going to be comfortably well off unless you're running things!

Money isn't everything though...

Right now i am looking at retaining as a swimming instructor - qualified to coach at a high level, it is goig to cost a couple of grand + (and around a years training) to get though the several courses i need to. In my teens i swam at a very high/competative level. I need a job that will keep me physically active and be rewarding and in this role i can also practice what i preach.

Pay is not bad even hourly it is around £25-30.00 so worth the investment, the 2012 (UK) Olympics is coming up and the timing seems about right for me.

Stick with IT get into a specialisation & go contracting, you will earning very good money & the differing projects should make it more interesting. You are 22, have a bit of patience, I didn't start earning decent money till I was in my late 20's, so plenty of time

Enjoy your youth & if you want to exert yourself physically, join a gym or pester your missus for more nookie

My advice is gas fitter....

Indoor work, so weather doesn't matter.

Not likely to go "quiet" as everyone has a gas boiler.....

IMHO

Very good job but take up rate is very low (1000 entrants only a few picked) and it can depend on which company/line you work on. i.e. branchline might be 25K whereas I think Channel Tunnel is £100K. I think

well were do i start i retrained to do this im 40 BTW, i went on a 6 month corse basicly
3 weeks collage, they then find you a placement i worked for 6 months for FREE to train doing all types of gas work back to collage for 6 weeks 30 exams later you need 100% in each one BTW with the main exam at the end , if you fail this its all down the pan till you pass it ,when i passed (2nd attempt) i joined gas safe bought a van and was of on my own
(your placement will depend on how good you are/get)

cost of corse 5k
hotels 1K
6 months off work 12K ?
gas safe reg £450
van/tools 5K
There is cheeper corses but you will leave with quals and no skills

was it a good idea ? YEAH it was but at the end of the day its a job like any other, you have to use your brain (yes i have one it just dosent do spelling/grammer) and your hands i like the problem solving side of it, some days i dont like it, some days i love it ££££

Theres work out there but not tons of it

what i have noticed tho is everybody is happy to see you (boilers broken) and they very nice so you dont give them a big bill

you need to know anything else just ask

Pick a program, become an expert then head to London and go contracting. My friend trained with a program called documentum and then went to work for the bbc at £350 per day before six months of moaning about his poor salary got him a half decent pay rise.
Many people with the right speciality get good money but whether they enjoy it or not is a different question.
