If you have a letter staing that the road they claim you were driving on is actually private, then ignore the letter and go to court. Defend it with a solicitor/lawyer and claim damages/costs. Jobs a good 'un!

Personally, I would ignore the letter and wait for court papers to land on my door mat, then send a pre-action protocol letter and see what they have against you.
The advantage you have doing it this way, as a litigant in person, you can claim £10ph in preparing your defense, which by all accounts seems pretty solid.
An easy hundred quid for you.
