There seems to be a pattern here.......
Those that are kept standard stay with the same owner longest.
My first was ordered in August '97, picked up April '98 and cost £23k. 5 door with sunroof and air-con. No discount.
Switched to something smaller and more powerful but went straight back to a Classic Impreza when the kids started arriving in 2003. Still got that one - standard apart from a couple of Prodrive bits.

Subaru build their cars to last for a long, long, long time without going wrong.

Subaru know that they could squeeze another 50 BHP out of the engine, but that comes at a cost in reliability and mpg, in addition to higher Insurance and other costs.

They have spent £millions in getting the balance just right ...... by modding, you upset that calculated balance and then bang goes the legendary reliability!

Keep it as Subaru intended and you will not look to another car, as the Scooby will go on forever!

i agree mate...aslong as u have quality parts and a proper map then it will go on 4ever
i think cars over 400bhp start going wrong as theres only 1 intended use but hey they are alot of fun and aslong as u maintain with top quality parts they will carry on 4ever

RB5 owned from new - June 1999 (so Alcazar beats me). 205,000 miles now and still love it to bits. Had a few tweaks along the way although nothing wild and a Zen rebuild about 20000 miles ago. Probably be buried in it at this rate :-)

Kept the same block, crank and heads - new rods, valves, forged pistons etc It's the (whisper) original gearbox too although it will probably break now...

Had my 52 plate Bugeye from new, picked it up on 6th September 2002 so over 7 years now, longest I've ever owned a car and still loving it

It's never gone wrong except for eating a gearbox around 3 years ago!

I disagree Pete, in my case the original engine didn't expire, it's sitting in my folks garage along with the original gearbox (which had a failure under warranty not due to modding and was rebuilt) being kept to go in my other MY98 Impreza shell. That engine did around 95k miles before pulled it to put in a stronger unit, and that very UK engine did 50k miles as a daily driver with over 340 brake, 25k with 240 brake and 20k with around 225 brake, 5k of that mileage was on track. It was most economical when it was running over 340 brake (regularly over 300 miles on a tank, as opposed to 250 before modding) and it never missed a beat apart from one day when it refused to start for a reason that was never diagnosed and that was when the car was completely standard and only 3k miles old!

Insurance wise it's been even stranger; when I took delivery of the car I paid 500 quid for insurance, I was 24 (a week shy of 25) every year since then the price has barely fluctuated, and now with 500 brake, aged 36, I'm paying 500 quid! The only running costs that have gone up for me in that time have been imposed by the government...

Oh, and just for you Pete I've dug out an old Photoshop creation of mine:

Had my old girl now for 10 years and 3 months and its still nearly as clean as the day it came out the showroom having only just done 36k,going to get a noble when the right one turns up but cant sell the scooby as its part of the family so hopefully when its 20 years old with 40k on it it might be collectable.

Had 3 in total, started with a UK turbo but quickly got bored of that

2004-2006 classic UK Turbo
2006-2008 classic Sti wagon 320bhp
2008-(never selling) classic Type Ra

Think ive got the perfect car now, love its rawness and that brutal low ratio box over time will restore to as new condition as i can replacing/upgrading bits here and there, its in for a full re-spray next week and a V6 spoiler and skirts

Insurance would, obviously get cheaper as you got older - so, as you modded you grew older and the increase balanced out ...... now you are 50 it's still what it was when you were a wee boy

And on the question of reliability .... remember that day you came into the club with steam coming out your Radiator top?? Whilst you admired my standard offering on the ramp? I saw you going all starry eyed at the fact that mine was still working properly

And as for the mpg figures .... did you change the fuel tank at the same time for a bigger one?

Had mine 2 weeks now and this is my first. I love it! Im always looking for excuses to go out and take it for a spin, i forget things off the shopping list so i can take it back out (a bit sad i know) lol.

The fuel is crippling me though, spent £45 the 1st weekend i had it and i did about 65 mile! to be fair i am booting it everywhere i go still but im sure that will ware off when all my wages is going on petrol.

Does anyone use the normal **** or is that a big no no?

If it is a UK car, then it will run OK on normal stuff.

I always use SUPER as I believe I can see a difference in mpg.

When I bought mine, new, I very nearly took it back as it clearly had a hole in the Petrol Tank!!
