can play with sti's etc all day long.
Lardy newage standard Sti's maybe My last MY00 classic had 270bhp n really shifted (i thought at the time) but a 280bhp STi classic would slaughter it.

I'm with Forger on this one.
The STI will be quicker!

Less weight, different gear ratios there won't be much in it but the cold hard truth is a 260bhp UK classic won't keep up with one.

Brun on your "MY99" where were the coil packs in the centre or off to one side.

+1.

It's not just about the power, gearing helps when driving fast from A to B.

maybe some of us are better drivers than most then(done quite a bit of road rallying, auto testing etc)
and they were trying hard enough as they were my mates cars.

Now you're just being delusional. I've owned various imprezas over the years and I distintly remember having my *** handed to me by a couple of V5/6 STI's when I first had my RB5 which had the roughly same mods as yours with similar power.

You can't argue with science an STI is Lighter, has more power than yours and is better geared. If you'd have said your UK turbo 2000 was about 320 then I'd tend to take you a bit more seriously but at 270? Nah it isnt happening!!

That's not to say a turbo 2000 cant be made to quick my old one was 450bhp and that would spank STI's lol

surely a sti classic isnt much lighter than a uk turbo? alloy bonnet on the sti but what else? i had a modded uk turbo running 270 mapped by andy forrest, then a v3 sti classic which was fully decatted but not mapped, have to say the sti was a beast, geared for rapid acceleration and more grunt once up and running thanks to the bigger turbo, really pulled on the motorway from 70mph upwards, had a lot of fun driving it home after it had just arrived from japan, played with a lot of cars on the motorway that day and left them for dead, had a huge smile on my face. now i fancy a v4 sti ra or maybe a version 5 or 6 type r v ltd.

whatever mate.not delusional.just got a very well set up car running near enough what an sti runs.(280 bhp.....100 ron fuel perhaps not our stuff over here).
just because a car is quicker off the line doesnt make it a quicker car cross country as people have found out across dartmoor.
plus there is sod all weight differance between the 2 cars.let me guess you own an sti???obviously no sti owner will admit they were between a-b by a uk turbo.

As you look at the engine - off to the right hand side. Do you question how MY99 my MY99 was????

Pretty much wrong an all counts.
Have owned a good few imprezas. a Bog standard Mica Green Turbo 2000 which was shi*t. A beautiful RB5 which was standard when I bought it and 400bhp when I sold it. I had a white 99 UK Turbo 2000 which again was standard when I got it and I turned it into a 450bhp rotated GT30R fed 2.5. I'm now in the process of building a 600-650 bhp V3 Type R. So I like to think I know what I'm talking about.

This isn't a biased STI owner speaking. I've owned 3 UK model variants and now have an STI which I've never driven. What I do know is how a 270BHP UK car with UK gearing will compare against a healthy standard STI. IN a straight line the STI will be the quicker car. Bringing twisties into the equation has nothing to do with it apart from introducing a number of irrelivant variables.

As for the roads of Dartmoor I know them incredibly well. I'm ex 42 myself and have yomped over them there hills many a time. I left Bickleigh and 42 for RM Poole. But that's another story

right is the car a my98 or an my99? is the coil pack with the ht leads plugged into it in the middle or offset to the right when you look in the engine bay?

if offset it is a my99 and the standard ecu can be remapped.

if it is in the middle it is a my98 and can only currently be mapped with a replacement after market ecu.

This in an MY99 engine. The can see the coil pack (with the red wires going into it) slightly to the right of the centre of the inlet manifold. Pre MY99 have the coil pack bang in the middle.

mines a 98 "S" plate registered end of December but is a MY99 with the later engine and E3 ECU

I think anything registered after september 98 is going to be a MY99, this is when subaru launched there new models if not mistaken
