From my own perspective I was at Bruntingthorpe for a training day. Three cars. GT3, Hawkeye Spec C and an E46 M3.
The M3 was by far the slowest car there. It felt quite similar to my own 330CI Sport, albeit with a little more top end. It certainly wasn't like comparing a Skoda to an Elise.
More like comparing a very fast three series and a pretty fast three series. Beautifully made, beautiful interior and I can see the attraction. But still a three series

The M3 like the porsche hides it's speed very well, it is so linear with it's power but the M3's don't start hauling properly until over 4K rpm where the Vanos comes in to play properly!!
If you drive an M3 in anger and watch the speedo you will be amazed at how quickly the needle sweeps around.
I don't dislike the Porsche and like I say I was i nthis very position a couple of months back and for me personally the M3 is a better car but it is horses for courses
