Try the phone out as well J4CKO and lets us know what you think of it after you've finished with the misses.

J4CKO, did your missus get the brown version or the silver as apparently they only come in 2 colours. If its the brown one, whats your opinion on the colour ?

I've got the brown one and it's NOT brown. The bezel is a burnished metallic coppery brown (er!).

This link is a pretty good representation

The Phone, Missus is in a bad mood as her mum didnt get her a birthday present, oops.

Phone is excellent though, really quick, screen is superb, interface seems as good as the Iphone, the browsers is even better.

I have an Ipod Touch, which I love but side by side, the Desire is better, not massively so but it is preferable to use.

Clearly you are wrong, but thanks for the review all the same lol.

Seriously though, its nice to hear from someone who uses them side by side. Both great devices. But nice to hear there are genuine alternatives out there now. Well done HTC for moving their game forward

Word on the street/tech blogs is that Andriod 2.2 is showing HUGE performance gains when benchmarked compared with 2.1

Benchmarks are one thing, will the gains transfer into a good real world speed increase?

Some of the figures i was reading about yesterday were = 450% faster for starters

I`m not an expert in this area, ive read that Android 2.2 is due out soon and it will make phones will run 400% faster.

Do you have to buy a brand new phone with Android 2.2 on or are Android phones that are running 2.1 upgradeable to 2.2 ?

Ive just bought the HTC Desire which i think runs Android 2.1.

Should be upgradeable, although i wouldnt hold out much hope of the Desire getting 2.2 for the next 2 years lol

HTC have still not released 1.6/2.0/2.1 for the Hero, and that used to be its flagship phone

The way they drag heels makes me think that all the current ones running 2.1 will be running 2.1 for a long time.

Is the battery that far off what they claim then ?
Stand-by Up to 340 h (2G) / Up to 360 h (3G)
Talk time Up to 6 h 40 min (2G) / Up to 6 h 30 min (3G)

I found with GPS off my DEXT lasts ages, but the apps that use the GPS dont turn it off automatically when you close the app down. Bah!

I`ll be buying a spare battery for mine anyway, from what ive read the HTC batteries are fairly cheap to buy. I`m not an excessive user but its always handy to have a fully charged spare.

Had my desire for a week or so now.

All the good points have been mentioned and I agree with them.

But a couple of -ves so far.

Quite slow on Wi-fi. Not helped by the loss from my hand on the device - but still not as fast as even a fairly old laptop in terms of its actual data rates. I dont know why this is - but I am looking into it. I have my router in my office - if I walk out of the office and into the next room it slows down almost right away. Walk more than 20-30ft away and it really almost stops. Can be massive delays in pages loading (like 5-10 seconds) and its the same on my network at work. Now I would have assumed HTC would have spent a long time getting this right. I am fairly sure the attenuation of my hand is causing the problem though. I dont know where the antenna is but I suspect its on one of the sides.

Video play back on anything other than you tube is not good. I dont know why this is. I have checked google and there seems to be the odd comment agreeing that it can be quite jerky. BBC and the like can be very bad - unwatchable really. This is a massive shame - but I expect its something to do with flash? I assume we have to wait for an update.

I dont find the address book easy to use.

The touch screen is often "out" of line and it selects the wrong item. This is mainly on drop down lists, it always seems to select the next one down from where I press. This could of course be user error - but its very irritating.

Other than those issues, of which I think the only one that wont improve is the Wi-fi issue - thats about it.

The rest of the phone is very, very good and a good option for people who dont want an iphone but want a very similar product in terms of function.

So far for me its 8/10.

If they fix the video play back it will be 9/10.

HTH someone.

Nice to see an honest review of a phone, pro's AND cons
I still dont like the touchscreen thing, and my DEXT irritated me when it decides you did something that you didnt lol.

The wifi on the DEXT is pretty good, works throughout the house.

Wifi sounds like a router problem or you are on the edge of your signal range, I have a similar thing happen if I am on the edge of 3g / gprs

Go to

Menu - > settings _> language & Keyboard -> touch input -> text input -> calibration tool

That will set up your screen properly. I think the flash is still on beta so although not great its better than nothing!

Pages load on my browser with in a second os so any longer than that and something needs changing with your wifi, maybe give opera mini a go its free and very fast!

Ive not experienced any of these problems either. A few guys have downloaded swype and use that instead of the onboard keyboard and reckon its loads better, but so far I'm happy how it is.
Swype on youtube
cnet

My wifi is as fast as my laptop so I would also suggest you check your router settings.
