Re my wireless network - its fine. BBC news loads in about 1.5 seconds on my main PC via WLAN. My crummy old laptop thats 802.11b runs about twice as slow. Probably a combo of poor CPU etc and 11b.

The Desire... 7 seconds.

Its defo hooked onto my WLAN, but for some reaosn its really slow.

Attenuation for my hand seems to be 8dB! Thats a lot!

I have done a bit of digging today and it seems the jerky video is a known issue with the snap dragon CPU.

There is some talk that it might well be fixed in the near future.

Out of intersest what kind of play back do others get on say Google Video?

You tube is a bad example as they have an app for it.

Quick test over wifi for you:

bbc.co.uk - 2 secs

dailymail.co.uk 2 secs

non scooby related 2.5 secs (scoobynet is a good test of a phone browser because of all the crap that loads on this forum)

I use linksys router at work and netgear at home and if I use the desire as a tether modem over 3G hsdpa then it runs broadband speed on my laptop. WPA2 pSK for connection on my wifi if that helps.

Can't help you on google videos I have not used it for years, I though everyrthing was on youtube?

for the wifi issue. maybe try changing your wifi channel? no idea if it would help but just thought of it.

Try and clear the browser cache.

I do this on the hero every few weeks, helps loads tbh.
I also keep on top of the cache of most programs, my phone was starting to slow down and get laggy, sometimes webpages wouldn't load, etc etc.

Similar numbers here, BBC 2 secs, crackberry (image heavy) 3-4 seconds, NSR 3 secs.

Re Youtube, smooth and crisp here. no stuttering, in sync and buffers immediatly.

Cleared browser cache - not really made that much difference I dont think.

I am testing in work and at home. I have a very fast connection at work (3-4 times quicker than my home internet) and its still taking almost 6 seconds to load BBC news front page.

My work PC takes a smidge under 2 seconds.

So very similar results to at home. I do think this is a CPU related issue also - because a basic site with a lot less images and layout to process does load a lot closer to "normal" speeds, for example, the Met Office home page loads in about 3-4 seconds. On my normal PC and my work PC its about 2 seconds - so its not that far behind.

Obviously this issue is made worse when I move some distance (even small) away from the router. Dont get me wrong its not a show stopper - just not as quick as I was expecting.

The video issue is on anything other than youtube.

I did more searching last night and there are quite a few threads on various forums detailing the laggy nature of the video playback. Seems its a fairly new issue - but being realistic - it does not effect me that much as I really dont use the video feature much - the last update was only a couple of days ago and it seems HTC are aware of the issue. Its a CPU / firmware issue as the non snap dragon phones they have out at the moment dont have this problem.

It seems on some handsets its actually quite hard to notice that its out of sync. There is a video posted on one of the forums of someone playing the drums - seems most people do notice it when they play this video on their phone. Slowly gets out of sync. Mine seems to be a lot more choppy too.

BBC iPlayer loads and runs fine, what are you having issues with, I will check one of them out and see what the quality is like.
Wondering if there is an issue with the actual phone or something as it all sounds a bit strange.

dont use mine alot for surfing, although when i do its pretty responsive on wifi, 3g its not too bad but does seem to struggle with signal from time to time.

bat wise its more when your running apps (just like the iphone form what im led to believe)

My early impressions of the HTC Desire is its a superb phone, no doubt once ive used it over a period of time i`ll find a few negs like you do with most things.

The screen is stunning, the colours are amazing for a phone. The speed of wifi and the mobile internet have been lightening fast so far, i`m new to this area of phones so i`ll need to get it set up properly first before i can give a proper opinion.

I can`t really comment on the battery life as yet as ive not used it enough to form an opinion, i`ll see where i`m at after a few weeks.

Ive installed appbrain and the first thing i put on the phone was 3G Watchdog which most people seem to recommend, if anyone can recommend any other good apps like a good radio app where you can pick up most fm stations then that would be good.

The one thing that could improve the phone is a double click option for selection apps, its a very sensitive screen which is fantastic to be honest but sometimes you can easily open apps when you didn`t mean too when your scrolling.

Well i got pissed off.

Video on the internet showing a version of Android2.2 running on a HTC Hero, while us in the UK still dont have an official 2.1 yet!?!

So i rooted the phone and sorted it out myself, it was not easy, it turns out that the last official update i applied to the phone fixed an exploit that was used to easily root the phone.

I had to preform a "GoldCard" method, to change the official ROM into a different exploitable official ROM, witch then allowed me to gain root access, and then flash the damn thing with a new custom ROM

I have flashed SenseHERO 2.1-B3 on to my phone and its bloody awesome
Just installing the Google speach thingy so my Google sat nav works


Now the phone is sorted with a custom recovery image, it means i can install different ROM`s rather easily, and i will probably be installing 2.2 as soon as a stable release is brought out

2.1 just seams a lot more polished over 1.5, a lot of the rough edges have been smoothed over, voice searching is pretty good as well, saves messing about with the touch screen

Just waiting for it to fully charge up so i can gauge battery life, a few people have complained that the battery life on the 2.1 roms is not that good, i suspect they are looking for none existent faults tbh

Heard some crazy stuff about making sure you are flashed on the "latest radio settings", no idea what that is about? never touched the radio settings, works fine

The phone now has 3 main states

Sweet battery life when its not in use or sleeping, normal use gives a slight battery gain, much better performance when the going gets tough and the clock speed gets wound up.

I have retired my android for the time being, just sits on the bedside table not doing a lot.
As much as I love it, I still cant like it as much as the "other" phone lol.

Definatly agree though, Android is becoming a major contender now, and it IS brilliant.
Lets see if OS 6.0 can step up for the BB's
