I want to try the iphone because it's a great phone but i don't want to become a fanboy and be like this towards the idea that its not the best phone for everyone.

The picture quality is mostly to do with the lens quality, and if i am correct, the lower the numbers on the lens the better, but of course, low numbers don't sell

Did you flash the updated firmware on it?
Made quite a bit of difference to mine to be honest, although the new 2.1 update is due soon, so might be worth you holding off if you never updated it.
I found the camera ok, but i feel the auto focus can be a bit off, or maybe thats me moving a little bit while taking the photo.........

My 3GS isnt very wide angle compared to my previous dysfunctional Nokias - so there, despite it being love (it STILL hasnt crashed!!!) I'm knocking an iPhone

Anyhow back to the original question, here's my original answer, buy a Google Nexus One if you must buy a HTC phone, you have more chance of being happy without being a geek.
Oh and what do you call someone who habitually berates the iPhone without it being mentioned? There's a few of those to deal with on this thread before the 'Fanboy' comments come out.

Being serious for a moment, I actually wish i knew somebody with an iphone, so i could have a good look at it and see what the deal is.
Web stats online dont really mean that much (`ish)
Not sure how i would communicate with them mind if i did know somebody, my cave-speak is a little rusty

I beg to differ.
GSM Arena, pretty independent site, and quite unbiased.
User ratings of the iPhone 3GS get an average 7.6 with Votes:24837
The Nokia 6230 gets an average 8.2 with Votes:24960
The N95 an average of 8.6 from Votes:140772 (not quite as balanced)
The SE W995 manages an impressive 8.5 from Votes:25458
HTC's Touch HD scores a decent 8.5 from Votes:21340
Im sure there is a good reason for this. Apple users are more refined and want more from their devices so score them accuratly, not just giving away a 9 or 10 for anything less than perfection.
However I thought it only fair to say from at least one reputable source, the iPhone is not the phone most users have been happy with.
There is of course the pride and mentality to take into account.
Once you have drempt about owning something so badly for so long, few would ever admit disappointment. So most owners will of course say its great.
Either way, I still say, lovely UI, great design, and a brilliant devices... If thats what you choose to use.

I also however know people who have made the switch away from iPhone and are glad to be rid of it. A friend (proper fanboy) has now had 14 iphones as they keep breaking.
They are brilliant little things, and certainly the original changed the way we look at and use phones forever. But I really dont think they are as far up there as some would have you believe.
iPhone was only pipped to the post by a couple of votes by Marmite lol

I'm going off this iPhone big time! Last night I needed to drop a small video on it to have a quick look over it with a client this morning. Encoded said video to i Phone MP4 flavour and then tried to drag and drop it via my PC. No go. Uploaded it and sent a link to the phone. Plays it perfectly via WiFi but wont SAVE it.
Why is something so simple so hard with a bloody Apple device - no wonder I turned my back on them many years ago
Someone said I could buy an app (god knows what or where from) to turn it into a webserver and use Wi Fi to FORCE it to save it? What a bunch of b's for such a simple request on a multimedia device.
As dropping it on a removable flash mem card is also not an option does anyone have any solutions for this clearly bizarre basic functionality request for a man who's brain is PC!?

Get it to play in iTunes first, then click Advanced | Create iPod or iPhone version. That's how I do it on a Mac. I hope the PC version of iTunes is as good.
For even higher quality video I use AirSharing, as long as the iPhone and the PC/Mac are on the same WiFi network I can see it as a drive and drag and drop to store and view not just video but many formats.

Thanks Jack. Does that i Tunes solution re-encode (I dont want it to!).
Also Air Share might be a good solution if it enables Wi Fi file sharing (just like all my PC's at home). Have had a look at their site and its seems to be a lot abou reading docs - does the phone appears as a shared folder on PC and vice versa?
Cheers for fruiting me up!

It does encode, I'd suggest giving it a try as iTunes, Quicktime and the iPhone work pretty well together.
I haven't tried sharing with PC, but am confident it's as simple as Mac. I keep a shortcut/alias on my desktop, start Airsharing first then click the icon. Passwords are always good.

Another mate suggested iFiles. Seems to work just using a browser on the PC and pointing it at the iPhone's Wi Fi IP address. That does the straight transfer I want and was pretty simple compared to Air Share (not that I'm scared of getting my hands dirty manually mapping a drive being a PC man!).
I'm 59p down though

The ratio of happy iPhone owners compared to any other phone in history speaks for itself. Personally I love the fact that I can recommend it and walk away knowing that it will begin to seamlessly integrate with the non techie new owners digital life in a positive manner.

I don't agree with your comment on the ratio of happy phone owners in history, The technology that the iPhone has, is the same technology that has been around for years in other phones, and applications and programs have also been around for a long time.
It does make me laugh when customers come in to my shop (i work in a phone shop) asking for an iPhone thinking its the best phone ever, i always ask them what has attracted them to it, and 9 out of 10 don't know why they want it, or whats so special about it.
Makes you wonder how apple have done so well with it, the advertising and publicity it has is probably the best in the world.
As for your comment which is "Personally I love the fact that I can recommend it and walk away knowing that it will begin to seamlessly integrate with the non techie new owners digital life in a positive manner"
do you believe this is the only phone that can do such a thing?
And have you ever used a HTC phone with android on it?

I have an iPhone and love it, however Im getting a HTC Hero to trial for a couple of weeks for free so I'll compare the two.
Apple is so much more than a product, its a complete brand that people adore
