Looks like we do have some troops there. From ... British drilling for Falklands oil threatens Argentine relations - Times Online ...
"... As Buenos Aires said it would take all necessary steps to prevent the “illegal” operations in Las Malvinas, as they are known in Argentina, the Falklands government warned against such sabre-rattling, pointing out the high level of military protection the islands enjoyed. Britain has more than 1,000 military personnel on land and more than 300 at sea in the region, as well as four Typhoon aircraft, one destroyer and one patrol boat. “We’re very well defended,” said Phyllis Rendall, director of the islands’ Department of Mineral Resources. “We’ve got four of those Eurofighters. We certainly didn’t have that kind of protection in 1982. Back then we had only 50 Marines.” ..."
I think 4 Typhoons should be able to do some damage ....

This is what the Falkland sconflict was all about in the first place.
We've already had some goon from the foreign office giving it "we have good relations blah blah" even though they've already stopped British ships.
Needs a 'bog off or we'll be back' message and pronto.

One mass prolonged aerial attack from Argentina and that would be it. Sure the Typhoons would give a good account of themselves and bring down more than their fair share of old Argy planes like the Sea Harriers did, but once the 4 of them are gone or the runway is damaged so that they can't land and/or take-off then that'd be that IMO.
By the time Task Force No. 2 gets down there, it'd be the onset of winter again and the Argies will presumably have learnt from previous mistakes and not have the Vulcans to worry about.
Maybe it's time to start sweet-talking the Chileans?

Yes, I do remember this. I also remember that when Labour lost the 1979 General Election they removed James Callaghan and replaced him with Michael Foot as their leader. I suspect that a lot of voters in 1983 looked at the two alteratives (Thatcher/Foot) and thought that they really didn't want Michael Foot as Prime Minister. (I suspect that the 1992 election was much the same as in it wasn't so much a pro-Major but an anti-Kinnock vote).

Ok, it's "The Mail" but it's quite a good read of a "what-if" scenario:

Did anyone really have a clue about the potential oil reserves way back in the early 80s? I'm sure it can't have been more than 10 years ago that Shell first tried to drill there. Think they just gave it up as being unprofitable when the price of oil dropped dramatically?
like most things its about exploiting the natural wealth of the antartic region
same then as now
without a toe hold in the region we have no say

Never seen so much sabre rattling, forget about the Falklands, you might as well be talking about the moon. The real enemy is already on our streets in most of our towns and living amongst us.

Way out of it is to be generous IMO... Share the wealth around the nearby nations. Look at how some Scots view the the "English" governments' stealing of their oil! Given the infrastructure on the Falklands, it would be very expensive to build entire towns and cities to support a large industrial population. And the likes of Greenpeace would have a fit given the risks to wildlife from shoreside installations on the islands. There'd be uproar if an oil terminal was built in Falkland sound. Thing is, if the Argie get colder about the whole thing, that may be the only way to go about it.
Now may be the time for a goodwill visit to the Falklands by a Nuclear hunter/killer submarine! That's if we have any left!

I remember reading somewhere that should the war not go our way, the plan was to send a warheadless polaris missile to buenos aries, together with a message to the effect that the next one would make a much bigger bang!
Say what you want about Thatcher, but she knew how to fight a war
astraboy.

Of course we have a bunch of spineless American **** sucking pseudo-socialist self-abusers in charge who'll run off to their American masters asking if they mind awfully if we defend our stuff.. and even if America says "go ahead our well behaved little Labour lapdogs"; Brown will then dither because the European Court of Sticking Their Nose In Other Peoples Business will declare if as infringing some Argentinian Lady-Boys human rights....
If we had real politicians who were really interested in the UK National Interest - maybe they'd just park a Trident Sub off the Argentine coast and send a subtle two word Communique of "Dare ya" to their President. At least he would be safe in the knowledge that he wouldn't have to live with his decision to invade the Falklands for very long...

I don't support Labour btw, but you wouldn't know that because you self evidently don't actually read the meaning in peoples posts
btw why is it alright to post stuff like this completely unchallenged.....

But i post up what is the only likely outcome of this non-crisis and get ****e from the likes of you. Why not direct some of your criticism at nonsense like that above???
