Its going to be a touch screen pc with a built in phone, how much would dell charge for this ?? Also a Dell netbook won't work with itunes. A descent netboot is £250 and then there is no touch screen. I think the ipad is going to be a good internet browser for the price and for what it should do???

Apple have posted some great guided tour videos
Apple - iPad - Guided Tours

I particularly like the tour of Pages, Numbers and Keynote which highlight the iPads toy like ability.

This article backs up everything I've said. Like it or not, the iPad is a glimpse of the future.

Can't wait to get mine.

Oh for goodness sake the iPad is nothing special, the trouble is it is made by Apple so automatically worshipped by the faithful. The really sad thing is we are in danger of letting the tail wag the dog i.e. this could become the future becuase Apple tell us we have to go there.

Let's be honest it is not really good enough to replace a laptop and too big to be a truly mobile device. Add to that the usual Apple idiosyncrasies and it ain't all that.

Where we need to be heading is an iPhone sized device (or smaller) with a truly portable large screen and touch keyboard add on so that you really can do your day to day business on it without scrolling around or fiddling for the right key. It also needs to step up and allow full functionality for the day to day business apps. Then we might be getting somewhere.

Unfortunately you're wrong F1_Fan, the iPad is very special, yes there have been touch screen tablets before but they were not the complete package that Apple are offering. You should ignore the Apple logo, you might be able to see some good that way. What you describe is what the iPad is, you're just way to blinkered to see it.

And if that iCade thing is real, I'm having one.

Well, we will see won't we.

We can ignore the first wave of sales as that will be people who are just buying it becuase they think it is 'cool'.

Let's see where it is in 2 years time.

The eagerly anticipated iPad has hit the shop shelves, with gadget-lovers getting to see for themselves whether the tablet device is worth all the hype.

The iPad - touted as a bridge between a laptop and smartphone - went on sale at Apple stores across the US from 9am this morning (2pm UK time).

Wall Street is keeping a close eye on the crowds at Apple stores this weekend to gauge whether the device can win a mass following like the iPhone has.

As the tablet computer went on sale, Briton Gary Wheelan was one of first people to get his hands on one after queuing outside Apple's flagship store in Manhattan from 5.30am.

He said: "I haven't opened it yet but I'm hoping it's good. I travel a lot in the UK and it looks like a good device for doing it with.

"I was on holiday over here and when they announced they were bringing it out this weekend I thought 'we'll I'm here so let's go for it'."

Hours before the iPad was released, hundreds of customers lined up at stores in New York, Washington, Boston and San Francisco, in contrast to the thousands that ushered in the iPhone in 2007.

Eleven-year-old Giovanna Mullen said she staked out her place outside the store on Friday afternoon with her mother Jeanney Mullen and her grandmother Tony Digiorno.

She proudly described herself as the owner of an iPod Touch and said her mother owns an iPod and a Mac computer, both iconic creations of the California-based firm.

"We brought food, blankets... so the three generations will say they slept together in the streets of New York," Mrs Digiorno said.

An apparent deluge of early online orders indicated the touchscreen slate-style computers will be another big hit for Apple.

The 24.6cm touchscreen device allows users to watch video, listen to music, play games, write emails, surf the Web or read electronic books.

It also runs most of the 150,000 applications made for the iPod music player and the iPhone.

While Apple has been secretive about iPad supply numbers, analysts estimate the company will sell several hundred thousand of the devices over the weekend and more than two million by the end of September.

I should have my hands on an iPad come Tuesday morning. Our app runs rather well on it so I am told, which is nice.

Not unless Adobe ports it, or a "lite" version, which they might do, but I've seen no mention of them doing this. Don't they have a web version, if so, and providing it does not use flash / java (and whatever else the iPad does not support) then it should run on the iPad.

Photoshop on the iPhone is pretty good for a free app. I would think Adobe will release a version for the iPad.

Photoshop for the iPhone is a gimmick, on the iPad it will be much the same. Serious Photoshop users would no sooner use an iPad than a paint brush and canvas. Anyone who says it works well enogh on the iPad for what they use it for shouldn't be using Photoshop anyway. It's a professional tool and needs a professional workstation to be used properly.

Why Not? Do Graphic designers not use a tablet and stylus any more? You have no imagination, no idea what the iPad is capable of and your hatred for Apple products is not welcome.

Jack,

Oh get off your high horse.

I don't have any hatred of Apple per se, but neither do I have a blind faith in them either like you seem to. They make some great products and some poor ones, deal with it.

As for lack of imagination. I use Photoshop nearly every day of my working life. Take it from me it will not work on a tablet (iPad or otherwise) if you intend to use it properly. There just is not enough screen real estate for starters and just how good will the screen really be in terms of colour reproduction, will it use the same high bit LUTs used in the cinema displays... doubt it at that price and hence it just won't be good enough to properly process a colorspace managed image.

Sure if you want to look cool and play aorund with a few images then Photoshop on the iPad will be fine, but for professionals it will not cut the mustard and if all you want to do is play I would suggest you shouldn't be using Photoshop anyway.

Was just going to say with the the remote mouse pad app for the iphone/touch, Photoshop would be BRILLIANT on the ipad.

I use for controlling mixers and software synths etc as demos for large groups. Pass the controller around the group for proper interactivity.

Yes, I'm a serious Apple user, but I also like Windows/PC stuff. Not quite as blinkered (in either direction) as others on this site.

IMHO the only device to come close to a genuine portable PC tablet is the Archos 9. Its not doing too well though - I had one on order from launch but I canceled the order because of battery issues and massive lead times.

I think this is still an issue, so for now I will stay away.

Until the ipad runs some form of "PC" O/S then its not going to bridge the gap. Apple, IMHO, need to get it running a cut down version of the Mac O/S asap - then they would be onto a winner.

As it stands right now, the ipad is not much more handy than an actual iphone. If anything its worse - due to its size.

Its a mobile browser. I do agree it could do a lot more - but the OS will hold it back for now.

The Archos 9 runs Win7 basic, and TBH, even with a half decent CPU it stuggles.

In the end I went for a Toshiba netbook with 1.66Ghz CPU as it can (just) do most things a normal PC can do, and has a 720p (well just short of) display.

This for me is the best half way house so far.

If the ipad could do everything my netbook can do - I would have one, in fact I would have 2. Seriously.

But, until it does, I will have to stick with my netbook.

Quick pic of the archos 9

What seems to be a BIG sticking point, is that there are a LOT of people out there who just don't like the visual aspect of Windows.

And this is where Apple are mopping up. The actual hardware specs don't matter a toss to pretty much anybody, as they're aren't techy-type people like those who frequent this board.

What Apple have stumbled upon is a the IT-for-all model. Anybody can use them.

Windows (and looking at that Archos) still looks very clunky, which puts users off.

So whether you love or hate Apple, the hardware or the software, you CANNOT deny the fact that the USER interface is VERY VERY good. For what it does.

and this I feel, is the bitter pill for most Apple-non-affectionados to swallow.

High Horse, it seems you're the one who's looking down poo pooing anything that may be positive about the iPad. Please take your negativity elsewhere, start a 'Apple is Poo' thread perhaps rather than tainting others.

As a serious user of Photoshop you'll know that it's a family of products not a single application, no doubt a monitor that costs far more than the iPad and isn't portable at all will perform some functions better than the iPad but that's obvious. Adobe could release a version of Photoshop for the iPad that has a professional use, unfortunately for you when and if they do you'll have to suck even more Lemons than when my iPad tells me to revisit this thread in two years time.

Back on track, here's how my iPad will look in Netbook mode
