Electric shavers are very hit and miss, i hated the lift and cut system as i felt the odd trapped hair being pulled as i moved it elsewhere plus the spots you get are ingrown hairs from that system, similar thing with the mach 3/fusion again trying to lift and cut for a closer shave trouble starts when it's TOO close.

As for being flash, well that's me all over im afraid you wait for when i buy my straight, it's a dirt cheap gold dollar considered to be the bare minimum next one will be ooh i dunno but it'll be flash and expensive for sure.

For those with the fusion watch out p&g have gone from 4/8 carts to 3/6 and the price will remain the same so you're about to get stung further.

Just using a soap alone makes quite a difference.

Mantic on youtube does some great videos to help you along.

I have just been watching the videos, and it looks like I'll be getting into work later from now on.

Also, if I lose an ear or my nose I'm holding you responsible!

Haha oh you'll be fine just remember to use a light touch and take your time, remember it's a live blade on your face.

Go for it, if you fancy a vaginoplasty.

I have just ordered me a thiers issard straight, it's expensive as it uses blades from the old forging before they got bought, supposedly they give a better shave not to mention they're gorgeous, cost me £250 btw.

Tell me this, for those who use Merkurs and badgers to shave, how often do you actually shave? I'm back in retail thus have to be clean shaven everyday, a wetshave with the Fusion everyday leaves my skin feeling like death and the Braun electric yoke i have, leaves me back to square 1 by 2/3pm and is rubbish at doing my neck.

I suppose in all honesty it depends on your beard growth. I'm no cave man so I could probaly survive with a decent shave once every 1 to 2 days so for me its completely a personal choice to try a different type of shave. From personal experience electric blows *****, mach 3 is expensive but doable, so I'm looking for a decent alternative.

If its better and cheaper and I still keep my nose and ears after a few shaves then I'll thank Hux

You can shave every day if you want to although your skin might not like you for it, the hd is suggested because it's easy to learn from but as your technique improves you can use a more aggressive razor like the merkur progress or futur.

The advantage is when they shave, they shave off a lot more hair so you require fewer passes and get less irritation but they will cut you easier if you let them, you can start on them should you wish seeing as they're both adjustable just take you time like with anything shaving related ymmv.

I can shave every other day and still look clean, but i can shave every day i just don't aim for a bbs smooth shave either way it's far better than a mach 3/fusion job, super iridium blades are verr good, very sharp but very smooth allowing you better closer shaves.

Every day...something I was never able to do. I would shave Monday through Friday for work, and by the end of the week my face would be bleeding. I no longer have this problem.

well i've just ordered a MERKUR HD DOUBLE-EDGE SAFETY RAZO to see if it's any better compared to the Gillette mach 3. I never get a close enough shave for my liking, even with brand new blade

Good choice, if the writing is horizontal you're fine if vertical id advise lightly running the edge though some cork, the vertical ones are known to produce some duds, still if you find them harsh corking won't hurt either way.

For those with very thick beards and are using or switching to a de give lush razorantium a try, many with thin beads don't get on because it's thick but those with an aggressive razor get on great with it as do i, it has a very nice light orange scent, requires no lathering and when you finished any remaining can be used to moisturise.

Certainly one to try, no hassle lathering as it goes straight on the face, but thick for a mach 3 though which might clog up a bit.

Well my starter set arrived at work today, and after 2 non shaving days figured I'd give the new stuff a whirl.

It's fair to say I was slightly apprehensive at first but after the first two strokes I felt at ease and am really happy with the results.

I still have my ears and my nose!

Probably the closest shave compared to a barbers cutthroat.

Thanks for the heads up Hux, and if anyone else has their first time, definately watch the intro vids posted earlier!

Am i the only person that can't use a disposable razor?

Last time I did was when I was about 12 or 13 after that my hair became very thick and tough I have never found a razor that can cut through it and I have tried them all!

Electric shaver for me once a week!

No worries it's great knowing you got on great with it as it's the whole point of this thread afterall.

When you find the hd isn't enough you can always progress to a futur or progress, both are adjustable and can go from sensible to super aggressive.

After the derby blades id advise giving super iridium blades a go they're a personal favourite of mine.

Merkur futur with the super iridium, i crank mine all the way to 6.5 and it cuts though my very tough beard no problem, any lesser razor would struggle id say buy that or the merkur progress.

Day #2 not so good tonight, got a mole thats bleeding and cut in a few places.

I wasnt so reserved as night 1, and had a few pints of guinness for St Patrick's day after work. If I'm still alive in the morning I'll post an update!

With regards to shaving it's just time and pressure, you probably pressed a bit too hard and rushed things a bit, when you first start it's important to stay focused.

One thing you will find, any imperfections will be sliced clean off, moles you should be fine but careful, the upshot is in a few weeks your skin will be great.

Just don't let it put you off, i can now whizz about with a very aggressive razor and not get a single nick or weeper, in time you'll suss what works best for you.

I'm a couple of weeks into using a Merkur 38C. First shave was a bit messy compared to the Quattro I was using before - god bless styptic pencils. I'm getting back up to speed now though and I've not cut myself for a few days now.

I reckon it's a closer shave and the savings on the razor blades is a bonus.
